Although Class 1’s basketball team was full of energy, the players from Class 5 didn’t take them seriously. The gap in strength between the two sides was simply too huge — whether in terms of physicality or skills, it was like a massive chasm.
Wang Peng found an upperclassman from the sports department to act as the referee. “This senior is called Li Gaoju. He’ll referee the match between our two classes. What do you think? If you don’t trust him, you can find someone yourselves to be the referee.”
Naturally, Wang Peng was confident that the students of Class 1 wouldn’t be able to find a suitable referee.
“Whatever. As long as he’s not deliberately biased against us,” Zheng Wendong said. He couldn’t find anyone better, so he could only block the opponent’s suggestion with this statement.
Li Gaoju glanced disdainfully at Zheng Wendong and the players of Class 1. “With your skill level, you’re definitely not on the same level as Class 5. Whether there’s a referee or not, the result will be the same. Don’t expect me to go easy on you, but don’t worry, I won’t cheat you either.”
The two teams prepared for the jump ball at center court. Originally, Zheng Wendong was planning to represent Class 1 for the jump ball, but Zhang Jiaohua grabbed him. “Let me do it.”
Zheng Wendong didn’t refuse — he knew he wouldn’t be able to beat Wang Peng in a jump anyway.
Zhang Jiaohua stepped up to face Wang Peng, and there was a noticeable height difference between the two.
“Honestly, whether you jump or not, the result will be the same,” Wang Peng said provocatively, comparing their heights.
“That’s not necessarily true. No matter how tall the mountain is, it’s still topped by trees. Just because you’re taller doesn’t mean you’ll be the first to touch the ball,” Zhang Jiaohua said with a smile.
Li Gaoju shook his head and placed the ball between them. To him, the result of this jump was a foregone conclusion.
The spectators on the sidelines also had no doubt about the outcome. The only real suspense was how lopsided the final score would be.
Xu Xiaoting was very pessimistic about the outcome too, but she still cheered enthusiastically for Zhang Jiaohua.
“Class 1, let’s go!” Xu Xiaoting shouted loudly.
Li Gaoju lightly tossed the basketball into the air. The ball rose high, and both Zhang Jiaohua and Wang Peng jumped almost simultaneously. However, because Wang Peng was taller and had a higher jump, he quickly reached the ball first.
A smirk formed at Wang Peng’s lips as he forcefully slapped the ball toward Qi Haoyu, the forward from Class 5. Although Xu Chuan’an was nearby, Wang Peng trusted Qi Haoyu to easily catch the ball and make a breakthrough to score.
Qi Haoyu understood the plan and tried to use his body to block Xu Chuan’an — but to his shock, Xu Chuan’an felt like an immovable wall. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t push him. Qi Haoyu’s face changed drastically — he hadn’t expected this at all! Despite Xu Chuan’an being shorter, his strength was not inferior at all. If he couldn’t grab the ball, he would make a complete fool of himself.
Fortunately for him, the ball never reached him.
Just as Wang Peng slapped the ball, a hand appeared on its path and intercepted it, snatching it directly. That hand, of course, belonged to Zhang Jiaohua. He had deliberately jumped slightly later, letting Wang Peng make the first move, and then snatched the ball away right after.
Wang Peng, still in the air, realized immediately that Zhang Jiaohua had intercepted the ball. He was stunned — Zhang Jiaohua’s leaping ability was actually just as good as his, allowing him to easily pluck the ball out of the air.
“Zhang Jiaohua, pass it to me!” Zheng Wendong shouted loudly.
But Zhang Jiaohua didn’t rush to pass. Even though Zheng Wendong and the others had great strength after applying “Iron Ox Water,” their skills were still rough. There was no way they could score against the sports students’ tight defense. So Zhang Jiaohua decided to do it himself.
Holding the ball, he didn’t rush to dribble away. Instead, he waited for Wang Peng to react.
Wang Peng finally came to his senses. “Hey, you’re not passing?”
“I was waiting for you,” Zhang Jiaohua said, wanting to dampen Wang Peng’s arrogance.
“Oh yeah? You think you have even a slight chance in front of me?” Wang Peng sneered at him.
“I just want to see what makes you so cocky,” Zhang Jiaohua said, starting to dribble and perform a few simple moves. Wang Peng stood still, watching Zhang Jiaohua like he was watching a clown.
“Come on, keep going! I want to see how much more foolish you can act,” Wang Peng mocked.
Suddenly, Zhang Jiaohua moved. Wang Peng was caught off guard and hurriedly tried to block him. Zhang Jiaohua’s speed was dazzling, and in the chaos, Wang Peng grabbed at him. Zhang Jiaohua used the momentum to shoot the ball.
Beep!
Li Gaoju blew his whistle.
Foul!
But before the whistle had even faded, the basketball swished through the hoop, hesitated slightly on the net, then dropped to the ground, bouncing a few times.
Three-pointer!
And it was scored after the foul. In an official match, this would mean the three-pointer counts, plus a free throw.
“Three points are valid. Class 5 ball,” said Li Gaoju.
“Referee, shouldn’t there be a free throw too?” Zhang Jiaohua asked.
“This isn’t an official match. No free throws. It’s a friendly game — friendship first, competition second,” said Li Gaoju.
“You serious? That’s how it works?” Zheng Wendong said.
“There are no free throws in a friendly game,” Li Gaoju insisted, clearly favoring Wang Peng’s side.
“Forget it. Anyway, they’re more skilled than we are. But if we foul later, does that mean no free throws for them either?” Zhang Jiaohua asked.
“Of course! I’ll be fair,” Li Gaoju said with a grin.
Wang Peng, unwilling to back down, sneered, “Don’t get cocky. You just got lucky this time, but your luck ends here!”
“That might not be the case. I’ve always had really good luck. Maybe I’ll be even luckier than before,” Zhang Jiaohua replied with a grin.
“Give me the ball!” Wang Peng called out to his teammates, determined to get back at Zhang Jiaohua.
The players from Class 5 were happy to give Wang Peng face and immediately passed the ball to him. But just as the ball was coming, Zhang Jiaohua suddenly appeared out of nowhere and intercepted the ball right in front of Wang Peng.
“I think I mentioned earlier, if there’s one thing I have, it’s uninterrupted good luck,” Zhang Jiaohua said with a sly smile.
“How could you pass the ball like that?!” Wang Peng complained angrily to his teammate.
“You were just standing there waiting for the ball, and you’re blaming me?” his teammate snapped back, just as annoyed.
“I’m not going to wait for you guys to finish arguing before launching my attack,” Zhang Jiaohua warned.
“Come on, this time you won’t be so lucky,” Wang Peng said, opening his arms wide and slightly curling them forward to trap Zhang Jiaohua, squeezing his space tight.
“Hey! Referee, isn’t that a foul?” Zheng Wendong shouted.
“No foul! He didn’t touch him,” Li Gaoju said, though his voice was a little guilty.
“Ridiculous! Totally biased ref!” Xu Chuan’an couldn’t help but curse.
Zhang Jiaohua just smiled faintly. With a sudden move, he shrank and twisted his body, slipping right out from between Wang Peng’s arms.
Wang Peng didn’t expect Zhang Jiaohua to escape so quickly and tried to grab him in a panic, but Zhang Jiaohua seized the momentum and shot the ball again — another ultra-long-range three-pointer.
This time, Li Gaoju didn’t even blow his whistle. He just watched as the basketball flew cleanly into the hoop. The whistle he was holding almost fell out of his mouth. One lucky deep three-pointer could be dismissed as chance, but two in a row? That was something else.
“Sorry, my luck’s still running hot,” Zhang Jiaohua said with a grin to Wang Peng.
Wang Peng was livid and immediately started arguing with his teammates about whose fault it was.
“Wang Peng, if you can’t handle that guy, just stop forcing it. Let’s switch to someone else for the offense. No way all five of them are sharpshooters,” Qi Haoyu suggested.
“Who says I can’t handle him? If He Aiheng had passed the ball better just now, how could he have intercepted it?” Wang Peng fumed. Originally, he had wanted to show off his strength, but after being humiliated twice in a row, he wasn’t even thinking about impressing the school beauty anymore — now he just wanted to completely crush this annoying opponent.
But He Aiheng refused to take the blame. “How is that my fault? You were just standing there like a tree stump and didn’t even secure your position! He ran right around you and took the ball! I didn’t blame you, and now you’re blaming me?”
The spectators outside the court were completely stunned. The game wasn’t unfolding anything like they had expected. Everyone’s eyes were wide open in shock.
Xu Xiaoting clapped excitedly. “Zhang Jiaohua, you’re amazing!”
Zheng Wendong and the others ran over to high-five Zhang Jiaohua. “Zhang Jiaohua, you’re awesome! Two super long shots in a row — you’ve almost dumbfounded them!”
“I thought they were supposed to be so amazing, so I went all out trying to make the shot… didn’t expect it to actually go in,” Zhang Jiaohua said, pretending to be troubled.
Everyone burst out laughing, clutching their stomachs.
Since Class 1 had scored again, ball possession returned to Class 5.
This time, when He Aiheng got the ball, he didn’t pass it to Wang Peng. Instead, he passed to Qi Haoyu — which made Wang Peng furious, though there was nothing he could do.
Qi Haoyu took the ball, broke through to the basket, and prepared for a three-step layup. But before he could even release the ball, it was heavily blocked back.
Of course, it was Zhang Jiaohua again. He had rushed over in time and snatched the ball away.
After losing the ball, Qi Haoyu immediately tried to steal it back, and Wang Peng also rushed over to trap Zhang Jiaohua. But Zhang Jiaohua accelerated, sprinted, and broke away from both of them. After crossing half-court, he directly launched another shot.
