“You tell me, why did you bring the old man here? What exactly are you plotting?” Fu Cha Hao Yue’s father, Fu Cha An Ping, pointed at Zeng Lei and asked sharply.
“I ran into Dr. Zhang here earlier. His medical skills are exceptional, so I brought the old man here to have him treated,” Zeng Lei quickly explained.
“What? You actually dared to bring the old man to such a place to see some unlicensed doctor? Zeng Lei! Who gave you the audacity to make such a decision!” Fu Cha Hao Yue fumed with rage.
The members of the Fu Cha family were all furious.
“Who do you think you are? How dare you make decisions for our Fu Cha family without consulting us!”
“Hao Yue, look at the kind of people you’ve gotten involved with! So presumptuous!”
“Zeng Lei, what are you really planning? Do you think our Fu Cha family can’t find renowned doctors and must resort to someone like this?”
…
“What’s with all the noise? I’m not dead yet!” Fu Cha Liu Feng, the old man, once held a high-ranking position. Though now semi-retired, his authority and presence remained as formidable as ever.
The family members, who had been aggressively attacking Zeng Lei, instantly fell silent, showing the extent of Fu Cha Liu Feng’s influence within the family.
“Father, why would you listen to what this Zeng kid says? How could there possibly be a good doctor in a place like this? I’ve already sourced a special medication from overseas that is guaranteed to ease your condition,” Fu Cha An Ping, previously arrogant, now tread carefully in front of Fu Cha Liu Feng.
“Didn’t you just say there couldn’t be a good doctor in a place like this? Let me ask you—could the so-called renowned doctors you found make me stand here and talk to you like I am now?” Fu Cha Liu Feng glared at Fu Cha An Ping.
Only then did everyone notice that Fu Cha Liu Feng was standing steadily in the courtyard, without even using his cane. Before Zeng Lei brought him here, he couldn’t even go to the bathroom without assistance. Now, he stood firmly, obviously having walked here by himself.
Fu Cha An Ping ignored the stern questioning, his face lighting up with joy. “Father! Your legs are healed?”
“Yes, my legs were treated by the so-called unlicensed doctor you mentioned,” Fu Cha Liu Feng replied. Though he understood his family’s concern, their earlier behavior was far too over the top.
Zeng Lei was the descendant of one of his wartime comrades who had saved his life during the war but never returned home. After the war, Fu Cha Liu Feng tried to take care of Zeng Lei’s father, but circumstances during political turmoil made it difficult. Fu Cha Liu Feng always felt indebted to Zeng Lei’s family.
“Really? Your legs are healed?” Fu Cha An Ping still found it hard to believe.
Fu Cha Liu Feng walked a few steps in the courtyard, showing no signs of any problems.
The Fu Cha family members exchanged stunned glances. They had sought out every renowned doctor in the capital, all of whom were helpless against the old man’s chronic rheumatism. His legs, injured during the war and further damaged during political persecution, seemed beyond repair. Yet now, they were miraculously healed.
“You all like to judge people with bias. True experts exist among the common folk. This time, we owe it to young Zeng. You barged in here, accusing him without asking anything, and embarrassed me. Zeng Lei isn’t after our money or influence. Years ago, had he told me, I wouldn’t have allowed him to leave the military, let alone settle for a job in law enforcement. His grandfather saved my life. How will I face him in the afterlife if you treat his family this way?”
In the kitchen, Zhang Jiaohua and Wu Yuan were busy preparing food, chatting away.
“Should we go check on things? I’m worried Zeng Lei might get into trouble,” Wu Yuan asked.
Zhang Jiaohua smiled. “What can you do to help? Their family matters are their own business. If you’re feeling restless, why not go practice some stance training in the courtyard?”
“No, thanks,” Wu Yuan replied, shaking his head vigorously.
Though Wu Yuan considered himself an expert foodie, he had to admit Zhang Jiaohua’s cooking skills were on another level.
“What did you add to make it smell so good?” Wu Yuan asked, curious.
“Seasoning I made myself,” Zhang Jiaohua replied.
“You’re using secret ingredients? That’s cheating!” Wu Yuan grumbled.
“Not really. It’s just wild herbs from the mountains, completely free,” Zhang Jiaohua said.
“Then you can make as much as you want?” Wu Yuan’s eyes lit up.
“Not quite. Preparing it takes effort,” Zhang Jiaohua shook his head.
…
During dinner, when Zhang Jiaohua met Fu Cha Hao Yue, both exclaimed in surprise, “It’s you!”
As the two explained their connection, Fu Cha Hao Yue finally realized that Zhang Jiaohua was the doctor she had been searching for all along. Meanwhile, the Fu Cha family’s skepticism turned into amazement and gratitude.
Fu Cha Liu Feng couldn’t help but praise Zhang Jiaohua’s cooking, saying, “Even the best restaurants in the capital can’t make food this delicious.”
Zeng Lei teased, “Your skills are so good, it’s a waste not to open a restaurant.”
