The situation in the main tomb grew increasingly dire. The Corpse King appeared to grow more restless, slamming into the stone door with mounting force. Finally, with a deafening crash, the door collapsed, falling to the ground as dust billowed and filled the tomb, cloaking everything in a thick haze.
“Run!” Chen Dianzi shouted, hoisting up Zhang Jiaohua and sprinting desperately toward the exit.
Woof! Woof!
The twenty-four mountain-sweeping dogs, along with a large pack of other mountain-hunting dogs, stood firm at the critical moment. They showed no sign of retreat, instinctively forming a formation. Their imposing aura locked onto the Corpse King.
Challenged, the Corpse King let out an angry roar.
Meow!
Surprisingly, the usually timid Fat Cat didn’t flee this time. Instead, it led a group of black cats, positioning themselves protectively in front of Zhang Jiaohua.
Big Fat Monkey grabbed a massive rock and hurled it with all its strength at the Corpse King’s head. The rock flew like a bomb, slamming into the target. Following Big Fat Monkey’s example, the other monkeys began throwing rocks at the Corpse King.
The Corpse King roared in rage as the first rock hit its head. However, the impact only caused it to sway slightly before it stood firm again, unscathed.
Bang, bang, bang!
A barrage of stones struck the Corpse King, but they barely fazed it.
Roar!
The Corpse King let out another furious roar and lunged at the mountain-sweeping dogs.
The dogs adapted swiftly, changing their formation with each of the Corpse King’s moves. Whenever an opening appeared, they leaped forward to bite into its body. Despite its nearly metallic flesh, the Corpse King was still a creature of flesh and blood, and the dogs’ sharp teeth left faint marks on its body. After each attack, they retreated cleanly without lingering.
Though the Corpse King struck repeatedly, it failed to catch a single dog, accumulating more bite marks on its body. Meanwhile, the monkeys continued bombarding it with stones, leaving dents and scratches all over its frame.
Zhang Jiaohua struggled free from Chen Dianzi’s grip.
“What are you doing? I’m saving you!” Chen Dianzi glared at him, frustrated.
“I don’t need your help! I won’t run away! I can’t abandon them to die!” Zhang Jiaohua shouted back.
To him, the hunting dogs, black cats, and monkeys weren’t just animals—they were friends. Abandoning them would be like abandoning comrades, something Zhang Jiaohua could never do.
“You can’t defeat the Corpse King! It’s barely hurt, and the only solution is to let these animals stall it while we call the authorities to blow up this tomb and bury the Corpse King forever. Yes, they’ll sacrifice themselves, but they’ll save the entire village—your parents included!” Chen Dianzi yelled.
“No! They’re not just animals; they’re my friends! I won’t be a coward, and neither will they! If you want to run, go ahead, but leave me out of it!” Zhang Jiaohua roared back.
He began to perform mystical steps, chanting incantations while forming intricate hand seals.
“Transform into golden soldiers, silver soldiers; summon divine warriors, divine steeds! White dogs become white dragons, black dogs become black dragons, yellow dogs become yellow dragons, spotted dogs become spotted dragons! By the decree of the Supreme Elder Lord, let it be so!”
As Zhang Jiaohua’s chant echoed, the aura of the dogs, cats, and monkeys transformed. Somehow, he had seamlessly combined multiple spells, turning the mountain-sweeping dogs into an unyielding battle formation. The once-struggling animals now stood firm against the ferocity of the Corpse King.
The mountain-sweeping dogs attacked with precision, leaving shallow wounds on the Corpse King. Though not fatal, their attacks now visibly harmed it. The monkeys, emboldened, gained strength seemingly out of nowhere. Big Fat Monkey hurled massive rocks with newfound vigor, causing the Corpse King to stumble with each hit. Though immensely powerful, the Corpse King was now on the defensive.
Chen Dianzi watched in disbelief. “This… this is an army of spiritual beasts! And Zhang Jiaohua turned them into a cohesive force capable of challenging the Corpse King!”
Still, he knew their stamina was finite. Even the Corpse King, seemingly tireless, would eventually succumb to the accumulation of wounds. Zhang Jiaohua’s relentless assault was slowly wearing it down.
The dogs’ attacks were strategic, targeting the Corpse King’s joints, particularly its knees. They gnawed tirelessly, like steel saws cutting through iron. The Corpse King, unaware of the danger, seemed to dismiss these attacks as minor irritations. But if its knees gave out, it would lose its mobility.
The Corpse King, though intelligent compared to ordinary zombies, lacked foresight. Frustrated by its inability to retaliate, it grew increasingly enraged.
Suddenly, it dropped to all fours like a feral beast, its movements becoming unnervingly agile. This shift caught several hunting dogs off guard. The Corpse King swiped with its claw-like hands, sending several dogs flying like weightless paper. They crashed into the tomb walls with resounding thuds.
Boom!
The dogs landed heavily. Were it not for the protective spells cast on them, the impact would have turned them into pulp.
Crack!
Zhang Jiaohua heard the sickening sound of breaking bones from one of the fallen dogs.
Chen Dianzi stopped trying to convince Zhang Jiaohua to flee. Instead, he chanted a spell:
“Primordial talisman command, announce to Fengdu! Summon the dragon’s courier to traverse the underworld! Chain the restless spirits, deliver them to the void! By imperial decree, I send you forth! Let it be so!”
A streak of spiritual light shot from Chen Dianzi’s fingertip, heading straight for the Corpse King.
The Corpse King raised its claw to block, but the light exploded on contact. Its claw emitted a sizzling sound, as though scorched by fire.
Roar!
The Corpse King roared in pain, growing even more frenzied.
