“My mother’s name is Chen Fang,” Chen Cheng said.
“You took your mother’s surname?” Liu Qiaoye quickly noticed something unusual.
Chen Cheng nodded. “I don’t know why either. What’s the name of that girl who looks like me?”
“Chen Fenglian. Don’t bother her. Her parents are from Meizi’ao, and there’s no way she’s related to you,” Liu Qiaoye said hastily.
“Boss Liu, please, take me to meet that girl who looks so much like me,” Chen Cheng pleaded, a hint of desperation in her eyes.
Liu Qiaoye hesitated and shook her head. “How do I put this? That person is married now and has two children. She’s living a happy life. If you go looking for her, it might disrupt her peace. Do you know how hard it’s been for her?”
“Do you know my mom? My mom, Chen Fang,” Chen Cheng asked.
Liu Qiaoye shook her head. “No, I don’t. Even if your mom came to the countryside in Meizi’ao, I hadn’t moved here yet at that time.”
Chen Cheng looked a bit disappointed. “Boss Liu, please, take me to meet Chen Fenglian. You don’t understand how I feel. When I was little, I always wondered why my family was so different from others. When I grew up, I thought I’d been imagining things. But when I heard in Meizi’ao that someone looks exactly like me, I started to think maybe my childhood suspicions were true.”
“And even if they are true, so what? Chen Fenglian has had a tough life. She’s finally built a family and is doing well. Why disrupt her life?” Liu Qiaoye couldn’t agree to it.
“Boss Liu, I know you’re thinking about Chen Fenglian, but from what you’re saying, it seems like her childhood was just as difficult as mine. If she really is my sister, wouldn’t it be good for us to recognize each other? We could support each other from now on,” Chen Cheng said.
“Alright, don’t rush. I’ll ask Fenglian first. If she agrees, I’ll arrange for you to meet her. But if she refuses, you absolutely must not disturb her. Otherwise, I won’t agree to help,” Liu Qiaoye said.
Chen Cheng hesitated for a moment before nodding. “Alright, if she doesn’t agree, even if she is my sister, I won’t bother her.”
Unsure how to broach the subject with Chen Fenglian, Liu Qiaoye decided to first talk to Zhang Jingbing.
“Jingbing, here’s the situation. Someone found me and asked me to help them meet Fenglian. I think it’s up to Fenglian to decide. If she wants to meet, fine. If not, we’ll drop it. I’ve already told the other side that it’s all up to Fenglian. Also, make sure the Chen family doesn’t find out about this,” Liu Qiaoye said with some concern.
“This kind of thing is hard to keep secret. Don’t worry, Qiaoye. I’ll make sure the Chen family doesn’t find out you brought Chen Cheng over. Actually, this might be a good thing. Fenglian may seem unaffected, but deep down, she’s always thinking about Chen Dianzi. She just keeps quiet because she’s worried about her parents getting upset. If she finds out she has a sister, she’ll probably be happy,” Zhang Jingbing said.
“Then you should sound her out first,” Liu Qiaoye said.
The entire village knew about this, so it was impossible for Chen Fenglian not to have heard anything. She just didn’t dare face it.
When night fell, the sound of crickets filled the hot, restless air of Meizi’ao.
Lying in bed, Zhang Jingbing tossed and turned, unable to figure out how to tell his wife.
“What’s wrong? Is the work at the hotel too much for you? If it’s too much, just tell Qiaoye we’re done with the security job. Last time, you almost got beaten up. Now you’re exhausted every day. No matter how much it pays, it’s not worth it,” Chen Fenglian said, massaging his shoulders.
“It’s not that. Standing in the hotel lobby all day isn’t tiring. Fenglian, there’s something I don’t know how to tell you,” Zhang Jingbing said, scratching his head.
Chen Fenglian chuckled. “Why are you acting so awkward? We’re husband and wife—what can’t you say? What is it? Do you have someone else outside?”
“No! Absolutely not!” Zhang Jingbing almost fell off the bed but was caught by Chen Fenglian.
“Then why are you so nervous?” Chen Fenglian couldn’t stop laughing.
“People in the village have been talking. They say one of the movie stars who came to film here looks just like you,” Zhang Jingbing said.
“I heard that too. Apparently, it’s uncanny. Who knew I had the makings of a movie star?” Chen Fenglian said, trying to sound calm while feeling uneasy.
Seeing that his wife didn’t seem to mind, Zhang Jingbing continued, “That Chen Cheng went to see Qiaoye today, saying she wants to meet you. Qiaoye said it’s up to you. If you want to meet, you can. If not, she won’t let her bother you. I thought you should decide, so I didn’t give Qiaoye an answer.”
“Let’s talk about it tomorrow. You have work in the morning. Don’t overthink it,” Chen Fenglian said softly.
“Alright, no problem,” Zhang Jingbing replied, but he was left wondering whether his wife wanted to meet or not. Too afraid to ask further, he closed his eyes and soon fell asleep.
Chen Fenglian, however, lay awake, staring at the twinkling stars outside. Tears shimmered in her eyes like the stars.
