Pan Yongxi was lucky enough not to be attacked by the ghoul, but Cui Yulin wasn’t as fortunate. Although he wasn’t directly hit by the ghoul, the chains wrapped around the creature struck him, causing him to spit blood and leaving a deep wound on his back, exposing his bones. Despite this severe injury, Cui Yulin was ruthless—he quickly rushed toward the entrance. Having already set up several traps in the tomb, he was confident he could permanently trap the ghoul underground.
Pan Yongxi pushed off the ghoul and quickly made his way toward Pan Yongguang. “Fortress Master! Take the side tunnel!”
“Cui Yulin, protect me on the way out. Once we’re outside, I’ll fulfill my promise to you!” Cui Yulin couldn’t yet abandon Pan Yongguang, the cannon fodder. With him around, Cui Yulin could always sacrifice him to block the ghoul’s path if needed.
The ghoul seemed fixated on Cui Yulin, completely ignoring the others, and charged directly at him.
“Hold it back! Hold it back!” Cui Yulin shouted desperately, ignoring the blood pouring from his body.
Pan Yongguang had no choice but to rally the warriors of Dalubao to make a last stand. But the soldiers were no match for the ghoul, which bulldozed through them effortlessly, smashing everything in its path.
“This ghoul is way too powerful! Something terrible is going to happen!” The old Taoist had initially hoped to take advantage of the chaos to snatch the Meishan Sect’s heritage treasure, but he hadn’t anticipated how formidable the ghoul would be. If the eunuch couldn’t contain the ghoul in the tomb, the consequences would be dire.
“We need to leave. Seal this place up, or we’ll be in big trouble if the ghoul escapes.” The old Taoist decided to abandon the risky endeavor. He didn’t mind losing the treasure, but he couldn’t let his disciple perish here.
“Got it, Master. I’ll carry you out!” Chengdao quickly lifted the old Taoist onto his back. The old Taoist tossed various talismans into the cave as they sped away. Explosions echoed behind them as stone fragments fell from above. Powerful blasts of air pushed Chengdao forward, helping him move even faster.
By the time they reached the outside, Chengdao was drenched in sweat.
“Put me down, Chengdao. I’m fine. It looks like the side tunnel is completely sealed now. Let me go in and take a look—you stay here and wait for me,” the old Taoist said.
“No way. If you’re going in, we go together. If we stay, we stay together. You’re still injured, so let’s just go back,” Chengdao insisted.
“Fine, we’ll go in together.” The old Taoist couldn’t let go of the Meishan Sect’s treasure.
Chengdao carried the old Taoist into the main tunnel. The formation had been destroyed, and many of the ghouls had already been cleared, so the path was relatively safe. They hadn’t gone far before they heard a sharp voice.
“Man proposes, but heaven disposes. It seems I won’t get to see the emperor after all. So be it. Rather than live like a walking corpse, I might as well die here. Dust to dust, road to road. Take this and give it to the emperor,” Cui Yulin said.
“Cui, what about the situation at Dalubao?” one of his subordinates asked.
“No one must know about what happened at Dalubao. It’s a shame that Taoist scum got away. You must inform the director to eliminate those two Taoists. No word of this can get out. And that ghoul must never escape…”
“We can’t hold it back! Run for your lives!”
The screams were getting closer and closer.
“Hurry! Detonate the explosives! We cannot let the ghoul escape!” Cui Yulin shouted harshly.
“How dare you, Cui!”
“You swore an oath, Cui!”
The Dalubao soldiers who had escaped shouted angrily.
“I will keep my promise, but I only said I’d free you from your lowly status—I never said I’d let you live.” Cui Yulin laughed maniacally. Despite his arrogance, he winced in pain as his laughter reopened his deadly wound. His men lit the fuse.
“Fight! Let’s fight them!” Knowing they were about to be silenced, the Dalubao warriors charged at Cui Yulin and his men.
“Kill them!” Cui Yulin signaled, and crossbows were fired at the Dalubao soldiers.
Thwack, thwack, thwack…
In just a few rounds, all of the Dalubao men had been turned into human pincushions.
Boom!
A massive explosion rocked the cave, causing the ground to sink. The entire mountain seemed to collapse as the cave entrance was buried under rubble.
“It’s finally quiet.” Cui Yulin, though triumphant, was in bad shape. The long wound on his back was bleeding profusely, threatening to end his life. His vision began to blur.
Suddenly, streaks of light flew towards Cui Yulin and his men.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
A series of talisman explosions left Cui Yulin dumbfounded. The old Taoist swiftly snatched the bells from his hands and tossed a few more powerful talismans at the entrance, creating another massive explosion.
“Run!” the old Taoist shouted to Chengdao.
Without hesitation, Chengdao took off at full speed, not looking back. Once outside, the old Taoist activated a concealment talisman, hiding them from the surviving Dalubao soldiers, and they headed back to Meishan.
