Afterward, the disturbances in Chen Shunchang’s home became even more intense. The roof and doors seemed to shake from every corner. Lin Hongfang was trembling in fear, but Chen Shunchang, on the other hand, was not worried at all.

“Wife, don’t be afraid! They don’t dare come in; if they wanted to, they would have done so already,” Chen Shunchang reassured her, looking up at the hole in the roof. If that thing wanted to enter, it could easily do so through that hole, but it kept making noises everywhere, trying to scare them into running outside in a panic. In reality, there were still many talismans inside the house that were actively working. If that thing dared to come in, it would be walking right into a trap.

Chen Shunchang understood that the thing that broke the roof and almost killed him was likely just a puppet controlled by the entity haunting the Chen family. So, the entity itself might not have been seriously harmed. If it had been severely injured, there wouldn’t have been such a strong attack afterward.

This realization made Chen Shunchang even more frustrated. He had come so close to losing his life, yet he hadn’t even gotten a clear look at the main culprit. He hadn’t even seen the puppet clearly.

It was only now that Chen Shunchang started to understand why his brother, Shunsheng, had failed. If he had listened to Shunsheng and led the villagers to fight against that entity together, things wouldn’t have ended up like this. But now, Shunsheng had disappeared, and the only hope left was Zhang Jiaohua from Meizitang. However, from Zhang Jiaohua’s attitude, Chen Shunchang could tell that Zhang Jiaohua wasn’t interested in getting involved in the affairs of Duimen Mountain. Chen Shunchang could understand why; even he hadn’t supported his brother’s actions at first. If Zhang Jiaohua were to intervene now, the people of Duimen Mountain, except for himself, would likely be very angry with Zhang Jiaohua. After all, the Chen family’s “immortal” had somewhat taken over Zhang Jiaohua’s business.

“Tomorrow morning, we’re moving to the garden. We’ll ask Jiaohua to take us in for a while,” Chen Shunchang said decisively.

“Move to the garden? Is that okay?” Lin Hongfang asked worriedly.

“At this point, it doesn’t matter if it’s okay or not. We need to save our lives first,” Chen Shunchang replied with determination.

Despite the loud disturbances outside, Chen Shunchang and his wife did not sleep a wink all night. Their home was like a leaf in a storm, swaying back and forth, but by dawn, it had landed safely on the ground.

As the sunlight began to shine over the ridges of Meishan, Meizi’ao started a new day, and Duimen Mountain fell silent. Chen Shunchang cautiously opened the door, still holding a sharp axe in his hand. He had spent the entire previous night sharpening it, and now it gleamed silver, reflecting the cold light of the sun.

The yard was in complete disarray, as if it had been ransacked. Everything that could be overturned was scattered haphazardly on the concrete ground. The walls of the house were covered in various scratches, which Chen Shunchang immediately recognized as claw marks from some kind of animal. They were likely similar to the claws that had attacked him. He climbed up a ladder to inspect the roof, and his anger flared up. The tiles were in a mess, and the rafters were completely exposed. It would take a considerable amount of money to repair the house fully. But at least no one was hurt, which was a blessing.

“Wife, stop crying. No one’s hurt; we can earn back the money,” Chen Shunchang said as he took his wife’s hand, picked up their bedding and clothes, and headed toward the garden.

“Shunchang, where are you two going?” Chen Fangsong asked curiously.

“I can’t stay in this village any longer with my house in that condition. I’m going to the garden to take refuge,” Chen Shunchang sighed.

Chen Fangsong quickly lowered his voice and asked, “Shunchang, what’s going on? Last night, there was such a commotion in the village, I didn’t dare come out to see.”

“Sigh, it’s better not to talk about it. I can’t stay in the village any longer,” Chen Shunchang shook his head. He noticed that the Chen father and son were watching from a distance, and since he was planning to move to the garden, he didn’t want to get Chen Fangsong involved.

Chen Fangsong followed Chen Shunchang’s gaze, seemed to understand something, and quickly stepped aside to let Chen Shunchang and his wife pass.

When Zhang Jiaohua finished his morning exercises and was about to head to school with his backpack, he encountered Chen Shunchang and his wife on their way to the garden.

“Jiaohua, this time, I have to ask you to take us in again. Last night, we nearly lost our lives,” Chen Shunchang recounted the events of the previous night.

“A cat’s cry?” Zhang Jiaohua asked, puzzled.

“I heard a cat’s cry, but I couldn’t see if it was actually a cat. At that time, there was a strange black fog, and all I saw was a shadow. I didn’t see anything clearly and almost lost my life. If it weren’t for your protective talisman, I wouldn’t have made it through the night,” Chen Shunchang said, still shaken.

“So, what are you planning to do now?” Zhang Jiaohua asked.

“What else can I do? If we stay on Duimen Mountain, we’ll lose our lives. We want to stay at your garden for a while. I know that Meizi’ao is the safest place around, thanks to your garden. Don’t worry, we won’t just live off you. I’ll bring our food over later, and I’ll help out with the work at your garden every day. I won’t take a penny of your money. Once this blows over, we’ll go back,” Chen Shunchang explained.

“Alright, alright. Go find Zhang Wenrong, and he’ll arrange a place for you to stay,” Zhang Jiaohua said, knowing he couldn’t refuse, and then he headed off to school with his backpack.

Meanwhile, at Duimen Mountain, Chen Maodong and Chen Hongming were looking toward the garden. They didn’t dare go to the garden alone, as just the dozen or so guard dogs there were enough to deal with them.

“That old bastard Chen Shunchang ran off to the garden. What should we do? Should I just go burn down his house?” Chen Hongming suggested, still resentful. He was terrified by the chase with the axe the night before, and even though Chen Shunchang’s house had been wrecked by those things, the couple was unharmed, which made him even angrier.

“No, we can’t do that. If the police investigate, you’ll end up in jail. That’s a serious crime,” Chen Maodong quickly shook his head and pointed to the house. “We still need to rely on the Immortal for this.”

“Right, let’s go talk to the Immortal and tell her that Chen Shunchang has run off to the garden. And that Zhang Jiaohua is deliberately opposing her by not letting the villagers come here to seek the Immortal’s help,” Chen Hongming agreed immediately.
