That shadow darkened her eyes, and her expression instantly sank.
Her brows knitted tightly as she bent down and sat on Zhaozhao’s bunk.
That shadow just now was unmistakably Long Yan.
What was he up to? Was he following them?
Was he planning to go with them all the way to Zhan Zeyan’s place?
The thought that Long Yan might be tailing them the entire journey made her face grow even darker, turbulent waves clearly surging in her eyes.
…
Two days later, the train arrived at its destination.
After leaving the station, Xiao Wange and Zhaozhao spotted Zhan Zeyan waiting for them at the exit.
Zhan Zeyan was dressed in a crisp military uniform. The army green made him look even more upright and imposing, and among the bustling crowd at the station, he stood out immediately.
When he saw Xiao Wange and Zhaozhao come out, he hurried forward. “Wange, Zhaozhao…”
The moment Zhaozhao saw his father, a bright smile spread across his face.
He ran up and hugged Zhan Zeyan’s leg. “Dad!”
Zhan Zeyan picked the child up and gently rubbed his little head. “Tired from the trip?”
Zhaozhao shook his head. “Not tired at all. And there were so many views along the way—they were really pretty!”
Zhan Zeyan chuckled. “Looks like Zhaozhao enjoys riding in vehicles.”
He had been worried that the child wouldn’t be used to such a long journey, but now it seemed his concern had been unnecessary.
After setting Zhaozhao down, he reached for the basket on Xiao Wange’s back. “Let me carry this. You’ve had a hard time on the way.”
Xiao Wange didn’t argue and handed it over. “It wasn’t that hard. Sitting on a train is much easier than doing physical labor.”
Zhan Zeyan smiled, slung the basket onto his back, then went to pick up the two suitcases. Inside were Xiao Wange’s and Zhaozhao’s clothes, along with various daily necessities.
Seeing how many things his wife had brought—and that she’d traveled alone with a child—Zhan Zeyan sighed inwardly.
His wife had truly worked hard, carrying a child and so much luggage by herself. Thankfully she was a capable woman; an ordinary person would have broken down in tears long ago.
Xiao Wange picked up one of the suitcases. “You just take one. This one’s mostly clothes—it’s not that heavy.”
Holding Zhaozhao’s hand, she glanced at Zhan Zeyan. “Are we heading back to the residence now?”
Zhan Zeyan nodded. “Yes. Let’s go back first and put everything away.”
With that, he led them toward a military jeep parked nearby.
When they reached the vehicle, Zhaozhao’s eyes lit up as he stared at the sturdy jeep.
Touching the door, he looked up and asked, “Dad, is this your car?”
It looked so impressive—much fancier than any car he had seen before.
Zhan Zeyan opened the trunk and placed the basket inside, along with one suitcase.
The other suitcase wouldn’t fit, so it had to go on the front seat.
After closing the trunk, he turned to Zhaozhao and said, “It’s not my car. It belongs to the unit. But if I need it, I can apply to use it.”
At that, the light in Zhaozhao’s eyes dimmed a little.
Even though Dad could use it, it wasn’t really his. So the thought of asking Dad to take Mom and him out for fun in the car remained unspoken.
Once everything was loaded, Zhan Zeyan urged Xiao Wange and Zhaozhao to get in.
Only after they were seated did he take the driver’s seat and start the engine.
Watching his father drive steadily, Zhaozhao’s eyebrows lifted with excitement. “Dad, so you can drive! Dad, how are you so amazing?”
Hearing this, Xiao Wange couldn’t help but smile.
This child’s sweet little mouth—no wonder he sounded so flattering. Judging by that look of admiration, his father must now seem like a deity in his heart.
Zhan Zeyan was amused as well.
He glanced at his son through the rearview mirror and said with a smile, “Dad learned how to drive before, so of course I can. When you grow up, you can learn too.”
Zhaozhao clenched his little fists, his face serious. “Mm! I’ll learn. When I grow up, I’ll not only learn how to drive—I’ll also earn money to buy a car.”
That way, he could drive Mom and Dad around on trips.
Xiao Wange patted his head. “Then our Zhaozhao will have to work extra hard in the future.”
Zhaozhao nodded earnestly. “Mm, I will.”
For the rest of the ride, Zhaozhao chattered excitedly about all sorts of things.
Xiao Wange and Zhan Zeyan indulged him without the slightest annoyance.
The jeep eventually stopped inside the family compound.
Many people in the compound were already waiting to see Zhan Zeyan’s wife arrive.
They had heard Fu Guosheng and Zhao Yi say that Captain Zhan’s wife was extremely beautiful—so beautiful she looked like a fairy.
To be honest, they didn’t quite believe it.
After all, Captain Zhan’s wife was supposedly a rural woman. No matter how pretty a country girl was, they didn’t think she could be that pretty. Even if her looks were good, her temperament surely wouldn’t compare.
So everyone gathered in the compound, waiting to see what Zhan Zeyan’s wife actually looked like.
Zhu Qiaoyu was among them—or rather, Fang Qiaoyu now.
Ever since she had been driven out of the Zhu family, she had changed her surname to Fang.
Fang Qiaoyu stood at the very back of the crowd.
She watched as the military jeep stopped in the open space ahead and as Xiao Wange, Zhaozhao, and Zhan Zeyan got out.
When she saw Xiao Wange dressed in a brand-new padded jacket, her features picturesque, looking almost like a true fairy, Fang Qiaoyu clenched her teeth hard, uncontrollable jealousy flashing across her face.
It was this bitch. If it weren’t for her, she would still be a member of the Zhu family—still the Zhu family’s young lady.
It was all Xiao Wange’s fault. Xiao Wange had destroyed her happiness!
Meanwhile, everyone else who saw Xiao Wange was struck with amazement.
So this was Captain Zhan’s wife. She really was beautiful. That face, that bearing—she looked nothing like a country woman at all. She looked even more refined than city folk.
After getting out of the car, Xiao Wange picked up a suitcase and glanced toward the opposite side, where a large crowd was gathered—clearly the families living in the compound.
The corners of her lips curved slightly, and a gentle smile slowly appeared on her face.
Someone must have spoken about her in front of these people, sparking their curiosity and prompting them to wait here.
She offered them a soft, courteous smile and greeted them politely.
After all, they would be living in the same compound from now on, seeing each other often. It was best to get along well.
Seeing her gentle and polite manner, everyone smiled back at her.
