Zhaozhao peeled the candy’s coating and held it up to Xiao Wange’s lips. “Mom, this candy smells so good. You should have one.”
Although the “dad” who gave him gifts in the dream seemed a bit strange—different from the dad in his daily life—he still felt he should be happy.
He had originally wanted to refuse, but the “dad” insisted on giving them to him, saying that if he liked them, he would give more later.
Xiao Wange smelled the candy—it really was fragrant. The candy coating had letters in English, indicating it probably came from abroad.
Foreign products were expensive, and for someone to buy so many foreign candies for Zhaozhao, it was clear that this “dad” truly cared for him.
She grew increasingly curious about this “dad.” What kind of person was he? Why did he treat Zhaozhao… so well?
“Mom, that dad also said something to me,” Zhaozhao said, peeling one for himself and suddenly looking at Xiao Wange.
Xiao Wange lifted her eyes to his face. “What did he say?”
Zhaozhao said, “He said he’d come see me again on New Year’s Eve and give me my New Year money then.”
Xiao Wange: “……”
She furrowed her brows tightly, a faint dark gleam flashing across her eyes.
Why did she feel like this message was meant for her through Zhaozhao? Like he was telling her he would come on New Year’s Eve, so if she wanted to see him, that would be the chance?
Frowning in thought for a couple of seconds, Xiao Wange patted Zhaozhao’s head. “Alright, Mom knows. New Year’s Eve is almost here. Let’s see how much money your dad gives you then.”
Zhaozhao smiled slightly. “It’ll definitely be a lot.”
After all, the dad in the dream was generous. He was sure there would be plenty of New Year money.
Xiao Wange patted Zhaozhao’s head again but didn’t say anything.
She put away all the gifts on the blanket, tucked Zhaozhao back in, and only returned to the hall after he had fallen asleep again.
Sitting by the charcoal brazier, she continued knitting the sweater.
But after just a few minutes, she suddenly stopped.
She was thinking about what she should say when she finally met Zhaozhao’s “dad.”
…
Time passed quickly, and before she knew it, it was New Year’s Eve.
That morning, Shi Jin-zhu and Zhao Guixiang came to visit Xiao Wange, bringing many New Year gifts for her and Zhaozhao.
Xiao Wange felt the gifts were more than she deserved, so after accepting them, she drew some protective talismans for them in return.
After sending Shi Jin-zhu and the others off, it was already past three in the afternoon.
Xiao Wange looked at the gray, overcast sky and furrowed her brows, her expression turning serious.
Winter days darkened quickly; it wouldn’t be long before nightfall.
She guessed that Zhaozhao’s “dad” would probably appear after it got dark.
Only, he had always appeared in Zhaozhao’s dreams before—would he this time… try to enter her dream too?
Her dreams weren’t so easy to enter; after all, her mental strength was much greater than Zhaozhao’s.
…
Finally, evening came.
After dinner, Xiao Wange helped Zhaozhao wash up, and then they sat together in the hall, staying up to welcome the New Year while eating sunflower seeds and candy.
After shelling seeds for a while, Zhaozhao suddenly looked up at Xiao Wange. “Mom, do you think the dad from my dream will come tonight? What if he forgets the promise he made to me?”
