“Check-ins” are a common term on live streaming platforms. Since Wang Yuwei is also a streamer, she’s naturally familiar with the concept.

There are two types of check-ins. One is an admin check-in, where platform officials inspect various streams to ensure there are no violations. The other is a streamer check-in, where a popular streamer checks in on smaller, lesser-known streamers, which has become a type of content in itself.

“Obsession?”

Wang Yuwei was momentarily stunned when she saw the flood of comments on her screen.

She had heard of Obsession, the streamer before. After all, she’s been on Huajiao for over a year, and she’s familiar with the platform’s top streamers. 

Obsession is a male streamer with a huge following on Huajiao. His average stream draws around 180,000 to 190,00 viewers, consistently placing him among the top 10 most popular streamers on the platform.

Each month, he earns gifts worth millions of Huajiao beans, with an average monthly income of around 100,000 yuan.

Although Huajiao isn’t considered a top-tier platform like Douyu, YY, or Quanmin, earning 100,000 yuan a month still places Obsession among Huajiao’s most popular streamers.

When Obsession checked into Wang Yuwei’s stream, his fan group immediately flooded her chat.

“Obsession invades; nothing left in its wake!”

“Obsession’s fan group has arrived!”

“Obsession Army—this female streamer is quite pretty, huh?”

“Haha, yeah, I didn’t expect to see such a good-looking streamer just by following Obsession’s check-in!”

Meanwhile, in a high-end apartment in SH City, a young man sat at his computer, live streaming.

The man appeared to be around 23 or 24 years old, with short hair and a white shirt. The shirt’s collar was slightly open, and the sleeves were rolled up, exposing pale skin.

His features were delicate, and his expression showed some admiration as he looked at the female streamer on his screen.

This was obsession.

A top-ten ranked Huajiao streamer, known for his clean looks and talented mic-spitting, he has amassed a sizable fanbase.

Obsession had been streaming for over an hour but noticed his fans seemed a bit disengaged. To spice things up, he decided to lead his fan group to check in on a few lesser-known streamers.

Before visiting Wang Yuwei’s stream, he had already checked in on two other female streamers. However, since many of his fans were girls and those previous streamers weren’t very attractive—opting for revealing and provocative outfits—his fans had pelted them with dozens of “eggs,” demanding that he move on to another stream.

In mid-2018, Huajiao introduced several new, interesting virtual gifts.

Among them were the “egg” and “dream brick.” 

The egg costs 1,000 Huajiao beans (around 100 yuan) and, when sent to a streamer, decreases their viewership by 1,000 points. It doesn’t add to the streamer’s income and even deducts 100 Huajiao beans from their earnings.

The dream brick, on the other hand, costs 100,000 Huajiao beans. It has a similar effect to the egg, but it decreases the streamer’s viewership by 100,000 points and deducts 10,000 beans from their earnings.

These gifts have become a nightmare for many streamers, with some even joining forces to demand that Huajiao remove them. They threatened to leave the platform if their demands weren’t met.

However, Huajiao’s executives didn’t blink. The gifts appealed to many users, especially wealthy ones, further strengthening the influence of these “big spenders” in the streaming world.

Following Huajiao’s lead, many other platforms introduced similar gifts that year, leaving streamers frustrated. Yet few outside the industry showed sympathy for them.

After all, to many people, streamers seem to make money by simply sitting in front of a computer and showing their faces, making the introduction of these gifts a welcome change.

As Obsession led his fans to check in on two low-profile female streamers, they bombarded them with dozens of eggs, leaving their already modest viewer numbers in ruins. While this thrilled his fans, the two smaller streamers were brought to tears.

Obsession paid no attention. For him, these check-ins were simply a way to engage his fans.

But when he entered Wang Yuwei’s stream and saw the stunning female streamer on his screen, his eyes lit up.

Most men would be intrigued by a beautiful woman.

Furthermore, he was still looking for someone to co-stream with for his New Year’s event. Inviting this attractive female streamer could attract more male viewers and possibly even win her favor. Who knows? Things could even progress beyond the stream.

With these thoughts in mind, Obsession said in his stream, “Wow, such a beautiful streamer. Let’s hold off on the eggs. I still need a partner for my New Year’s co-stream. Let’s not ruin it.”

“Obsession! You’re going to co-stream with *her*? I’m heartbroken!”

“Haha, Little Star streamer, Obsession is here to help you out!”

“Yeah, your big break is here, little streamer.”

“666! We’re witnessing the rise of a small streamer.”

“666! We’re watching Obsession hit on girls!”

“Lol, not wrong!”

“A bunch of idiots! Did our Little Star streamer even agree to co-stream with you? Just because you’re a big name doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want!”

“Exactly! These big-name streamers are so full of themselves!”

“I can’t stand show-offs like this. If Little Star agrees to costream with Obsession, I’m done. I’ve been supporting her for a year! And if Cold Tycoon sees her agree, he’ll probably stop sending gifts.”

“Right! Cold Tycoon has been so generous, sending castles left and right. Plus, he’s her online boyfriend. If she runs off with Obsession, that’d be heartbreaking.”

At that moment, amidst the barrage of comments, a relatively unnoticed ID quietly entered the stream.
