Ten minutes later.
In the basement, Mu Bai looked at the photos of golden arowana fry the seller had sent him and noticed that the fry seemed weak and listless.
Xu Jinhuan: Since I don’t know how to raise them, the five golden arowana fry have been in poor condition these past few days. I’m not trying to cheat you. If you want them, I’ll sell them cheap. If you don’t, that’s fine too. I just can’t bear to watch them die in my care.
Seeing Xu Jinhuan’s honesty, Mu Bai didn’t waste words. He simply replied, “I’ll take them. Where shall we trade?”
Xu Jinhuan: “…”
“Hm? What’s wrong? Is there something else?” Mu Bai asked.
“No, nothing. I just think you’re very straightforward. Normally, wouldn’t people try to haggle at this point?” Xu Jinhuan replied.
“Heh, no need. Just tell me where to meet. The price on the forum is fine.” Mu Bai chuckled softly without explaining further.
After all, some things couldn’t be explained. He couldn’t exactly bring up his magical space.
“Come to my place to trade then. Otherwise, I’m afraid the fry might die during transport.” Xu Jinhuan replied.
She already knew how delicate golden arowana fry were. Even with the best care, they were dying under her watch — moving them around would only be worse.
“Alright. What’s the address?”
“Haifa Community, Building 18, Unit 3, Apartment 602, next to the Nantong Courier Branch. How long will it take you to get here?”
“Half an hour.”
Mu Bai thought about it. The courier branch wasn’t far. If he took a cab, it would be about a twenty-minute ride.
“Okay, I’ll wait for you.”
After seeing her message, Mu Bai got moving.
It was just past ten in the morning. The weather was fine, sunlight bright. Mu Bai stepped out into the street and hailed a taxi.
It was the weekend. The roads were busy, with many couples and students walking along, chatting and laughing.
The cab driver was experienced. Despite the traffic, the taxi moved quickly.
Twenty minutes later.
Mu Bai arrived at Xu Jinhuan’s home. When he stepped inside, he was momentarily struck by her charm and beauty — only for a second or two, though, before regaining composure.
“Hello, I’m the one from QQ about the golden arowana,” Mu Bai greeted politely.
“Hello, hello. But… you didn’t bring a fish tank? How will you carry them without one?”
Xu Jinhuan looked at the young buyer in surprise. She hadn’t expected someone his age.
Most young people were into gaming, chatting online, or competitions — not fish keeping, which demanded patience and perseverance.
“No need for a tank, a plastic bag will do. Let me see the fish, and I’ll transfer the three thousand yuan to your QQ.”
As he spoke, Mu Bai casually pulled out a black plastic bag he had bought on the way. All he needed was to get the fry home alive.
He figured that for a twenty-minute trip, no matter how delicate the fish were, they wouldn’t suddenly keel over.
“This…”
Xu Jinhuan parted her tempting red lips, wanting to say that golden arowanas were too delicate for a plastic bag. But in the end, she stayed quiet. After all, the buyer was about to pay, and once the money was his, how he carried the fry was his business.
“Come take a look.” She hesitated, then led Mu Bai over to the tank.
Inside, the five golden arowana fry weren’t floating belly-up yet, but their condition was dire. If left in her care, they probably wouldn’t last the week.
“They’ll do. I’ll transfer you three thousand.”
After checking them, Mu Bai didn’t hesitate. He pulled out his phone and transferred the money.
“Got it.”
The transfer went through instantly.
“Alright, then I’ll take them now.”
Once she confirmed receipt, Mu Bai asked what tool she used for scooping the fish.
She pointed to the net by the tank.
Mu Bai picked it up and quickly scooped the delicate fry out, dropping them into the plastic bag.
It was an ordinary enough action, but for fragile golden arowanas, it was a bit rough.
Struggling fiercely in what seemed like a final burst of energy, the five frail fry flailed helplessly.
“Hey, little brother, you’ll kill them like that! I thought I was bad at raising them, but it seems you know even less!”
Seeing his rough handling, Xu Jinhuan almost felt she could hear the fry crying out.
“It’s fine,” Mu Bai said dismissively. He dropped all five fry into the bag, then added some water.
“Fine? You clearly know nothing about golden arowanas!”
Though she knew the fry no longer belonged to her, Xu Jinhuan couldn’t help feeling pained and angry watching his careless actions.
She was already regretting selling them to him, when suddenly Mu Bai asked: “You say I know nothing about golden arowanas?”
“Don’t you?” His sudden question made her falter a little.
“It’s true, I know nothing about them,” Mu Bai admitted frankly.
His honesty seemed to let her regain some ground. She was about to lecture him on the basics of fish care when he looked straight at her.
“But… you know nothing about me either, do you?”
“This…”
The sudden remark left Xu Jinhuan stunned, wiping away the confidence she had just regained.
“Goodbye.”
Mu Bai spoke calmly, then left with the fry.
Stepping out of the community into the bright sun, he walked briskly.
Once outside, he hailed a cab to return to his basement rental.
“Five fry… The planting slots in the magical space are already full. But I can temporarily store them in the magical warehouse, and once the orchids finish, I’ll raise them one by one.”
In the cab, Mu Bai was already planning how to cultivate the golden arowana fry.
He had researched the magical warehouse in detail: all plants and animals inside would remain in a frozen state of time. In other words, as long as the arowana still had a breath of life left, even if left in the warehouse for ten years, when taken out, it would still have that single breath left.
