Room 408 at the Wind Bao Club. Lu Ming hadn’t expected Mary to bring an appointment letter and enlistment notice, along with a full military uniform and officer ID. Her efficiency was impressive.

It was evident that regardless of whether she was Sir Wenge’s sweetheart, her efficiency and work style were certainly to his liking.

These past few days, Tie Xiaojia had been the one liaising with her, gathering evidence and summarizing actionable points.

The appointment letter showed that he was temporarily given the rank of colonel. This role primarily involved providing legal services to military decision-makers, prosecuting officers and soldiers in military court for breaches of military law, representing officers and soldiers in civil, economic, and administrative lawsuits, mediations, and arbitrations, and handling legal matters on behalf of the military, such as when the military itself was sued by civilians.

Thus, frequent presence in various military settings necessitated having a rank, and it couldn’t be too low. Since the commanding officer was a major general, the legal advisor, representing the entire Coast Guard, needed a rank that reflected the importance of their role. Below major general was brigadier general, and below that was colonel.

Typically, this position was filled by renowned lawyers from the civilian sector, so a temporary colonel rank was fitting. But for him?

Lu Ming put on the dark blue naval officer uniform and looked at the silver eagle on his shoulder in the mirror. Being a lawyer had its perks. Unless they were royalty, noble children his age couldn’t dream of wearing such an insignia.

Though temporary, during his service period, he was a legitimate colonel in the East Sea National Security Force’s Coast Guard.

“Mary, does Sir Wenge know about my background, such as my age?” Lu Ming asked Mary. “And shouldn’t I meet Sir Wenge in person?”

Mary smiled sweetly. “Of course, he knows your credentials. I told him! He was worried you might not want to enlist! Also, he’s rarely at the base, leaving everything to me.”

Lu Ming rubbed his nose, thinking that the lack of external threats must be why the military could afford such a lax structure. If a war broke out, this kind of leadership and loose system would likely surrender quickly.

After a brief contemplation, Lu Ming sat back down at the coffee table, took out his checkbook from his briefcase, and wrote a check for 5000 yuan, handing it to Mary.

“What’s this for?!” Mary was surprised. Seeing the amount, her initial refusal turned into tightly gripping the check.

“It should have been a gift, but I didn’t know what to get you, so you can buy something yourself. Accept it!” Lu Ming gestured and then laughed. “I didn’t give you cash because I’m transparent and don’t feel any shame about this uniform. I will do my job well. Giving you cash would seem like we are doing something underhanded. Don’t you agree?”

Mary hesitated but finally accepted the check, smiling at Lu Ming with a hint of flirtation in her large eyes. “Thank you, sir. I’ll rely on you from now on. It’s only right for the boss to support his ‘honey’.”

Lu Ming chuckled. Now his rank was indeed higher than hers. He could also sense the underlying meaning in her words, that if any trouble arose in the future, she would use this narrative.

“I do wish the boss really would support me!” Mary sighed with a somewhat “wistful” look.

Lu Ming waved her off, “Alright, that’s it for today. This afternoon, I’ll officially send a lawyer’s letter to Baron Renault, the licensee of the Tower Restaurant. Let’s see how they respond.”

Mary was taken aback. “Isn’t young Renault managing the Tower Restaurant?”

Lu Ming smiled, “But the licensee is the elder Baron Renault.”

With information from the Old Ghost, Lu Ming had confirmed the details of the Tower Restaurant. Although the Old Ghost didn’t have many connections in the western district, the Renault family was well-known.

The elder Renault had been passionate about films from a young age. Upon inheriting his father’s estate, he sold most of the assets to start a film company. Renault Films became one of the largest film companies in East Sea, and Empire’s most popular star, Nicole Hepburn, was signed with them. The Tower Restaurant, on the other hand, was managed by his younger son, young Renault.

Young Renault had a terrible reputation, known for severe racial discrimination, frequently beating people without reason, even severely injuring several individuals of other races, and leaving one disabled. Yet, he managed to either settle or dodge the lawsuits.

Compared to him, the well-behaved rich boys Lu Ming had encountered in East Sea were nothing.

With the Old Ghost’s information, Lu Ming felt even more justified in pursuing this case.

But noticing Mary’s hesitation about directly sending a lawyer’s letter to Baron Renault, Lu Ming smiled, “If you’re having second thoughts, it’s not too late to back out. As a lawyer, I must respect my client’s wishes and cannot encourage you to pursue a lawsuit against your will. That would be against professional ethics.”

“Okay, I want to pursue this case!” Mary gritted her teeth.

Lu Ming nodded, “Alright, if no one responds within seven days of us sending the lawyer’s letter, we’ll officially file the lawsuit. In the meantime, you should wear your uniform whenever you go out. And until the case is resolved, avoid going to any inappropriate places. Just stay at the base. Also, do you have any sensitive photos in the hands of ex-boyfriends or anyone who might have a grudge and could testify against you?”

Mary smiled, “There might be quite a few. I’ve broken up with many, and those who tried to cling to me, I’ve harshly rebuked. I don’t like dragging things out once they’re over.”

Lu Ming nodded, thinking she truly embodied a strong, independent woman. Most men would feel they’d gotten the upper hand in a relationship, but not her. She made men feel played.

Mary hesitated, “Does this mean the case might be hard to win?”

“It doesn’t really matter. Those things aren’t the main point,” Lu Ming waved her concern away. “You can go now. I’ll draft the lawyer’s letter.”

“Alright.” Mary got up, thought for a moment, “Lu, in a few days, a liaison officer will report here as your contact with the military. Do you have a small office space for them?”

Lu Ming thought it over, “Can I choose the liaison myself? Just need some guidance from you.”

Mary nodded, “Yes, that’s fine.”
