He wanted to dream, but Yin Ziyu wasn’t going to let him. If he was ruthless, she wouldn’t show mercy.
Seeing the Xiao family carriage about to leave, Yin Ziyu immediately warned the soldiers:
“You’ve been deceived! Do you know that man used to be the goddess doctor’s fiancé? He’s certainly going to find the goddess doctor. If he goes there and Prince Jing finds out, he’ll have you all executed!”
The soldiers, seeing her urgency, had no choice but to believe her. “Miss, are you telling the truth?”
“The goddess doctor is my sister. Do you think I would joke about her? She’s about to become Prince Jing’s consort. If something goes wrong now, you wouldn’t be able to handle it.”
Worried, the soldiers immediately gave orders to stop the Xiao family carriage.
Xiao Chengli, confused, saw the carriage halt abruptly and the horses whinny.
“Seize him!”
He tried to get out to see what was happening, but the guards held him back.
“How dare you! Don’t you know the goddess doctor is about to be Prince Jing’s consort? And yet you dare cause trouble? Take him away!”
“What are you talking about?” Xiao Chengli demanded, still bewildered as he was restrained.
“Just wait for Prince Jing to handle it,” the guards said.
Even though he didn’t fully understand, Xiao Chengli realized it must be Yin Ziyu’s doing. He glanced at her.
“What are you saying?” he asked.
Yin Ziyu smiled coldly. “What could I say? I’m just telling the truth. You’re going to see Yin Qingyue—others may not know, but I do. Do you think that means you can be with her? Stop dreaming. She’s Prince Jing’s consort now. You and she are worlds apart.”
“Ziyu, I’m inspecting a new shop in Northern Hao. It’s not what you’re saying,” Xiao Chengli protested.
“Stop pretending. Do you think I wouldn’t understand your intentions? You heard Yin Qingyue was in Northern Hao and immediately came. And you’re avoiding me,” she said.
“Don’t talk nonsense,” Xiao Chengli said, a bit guilty, though he tried to hide it.
Yin Ziyu’s eyes turned icy. This man who once whispered sweet words to her was nothing more than a wolf in sheep’s clothing—cruel and deceitful.
“Xiao Chengli, now I know who you really are. I was blind to ever like someone like you. If I had a second chance, I’d never choose you.”
Xiao Chengli remained silent. He knew Yin Ziyu had seen through him. This foolish girl was finally no longer naive.
Seeing he didn’t argue, Yin Ziyu turned to the guards:
“Officers, listen carefully. This man was once the fiancé of your future Prince Jing’s consort. If he escapes and reaches her, the consequences will be severe. Keep him under watch.”
“You don’t need to tell us. If verified, he will not be allowed to escape,” the guards said, immediately detaining Xiao Chengli.
As for Yin Ziyu, they treated her carefully—her identity as Yin Qingyue’s sister was not yet confirmed, and she was still a young lady.
Meanwhile, the border guards sped toward Prince Jing’s mansion.
Soon, they arrived outside and ran into Chu Jingcheng leaving the estate. Seeing the guards from the border rushing in, his expression darkened, eyebrows furrowing.
“What’s the matter? Why aren’t you stationed at the border?”
The guards reported, “Your Highness, two intruders appeared at the border.”
“Two people? Who?”
“From Xize. A woman and a man. The woman is the goddess doctor’s sister; the man seems to be her former fiancé.”
“Former fiancé?” Chu Jingcheng’s eyes flickered with surprise and slight confusion.
He had no fondness for the Yin family. When Yin Qingyue was sent to Luochenyuan, they ignored her entirely. Chu Jingcheng didn’t care for Yin Ziyu and even disliked her.
But that didn’t matter now. What mattered was the man—Yin Qingyue’s former fiancé? He, the rightful consort, was right here.
His expression turned sharp. “Investigate immediately. Identify these people and report back. If he truly is the goddess doctor’s former fiancé, you know what to do.”
“Yes, Your Highness. We’ll handle it carefully.”
The guard hesitated. “And the woman? She really seems to be the goddess doctor’s sister. Should we bring her in?”
“Not yet. I’ll deal with that later.”
“Yes, Your Highness,” the guards left.
Chu Jingcheng pondered. Yin Ziyu’s arrival required informing Yin Qingyue. He decided to visit her.
Yin Qingyue had been collecting herbs in the good weather, drying them to avoid dust.
“Your Highness, I have something to tell you.”
“What is it?” She continued her work without looking up.
He hesitated. He had brought her to Northern Hao to keep her away from Xize, yet now her sister had appeared—her intentions were obvious.
Seeing him silent, Yin Qingyue asked, “What’s wrong? Why so secretive?”
“Just now, border guards reported a woman wants to see you.”
“Me? Who?”
“Your sister. Truth unknown.”
Yin Qingyue was surprised, then amused. Though not truly Yin Qingyue, she retained all the memories of the original body.
Yin Ziyu would naturally come to cling to her sister now that she was about to become Prince Jing’s consort. She was curious to see how.
“This really is my sister. Let her into Northern Hao,” Yin Qingyue said.
“Generous of you. Considering how your family treated you, letting your sister come here—do you know what this means? You’re not even angry?”
“Your Highness, that’s not true. If you sent her back, I wouldn’t even have the chance to get angry,” Yin Qingyue replied, turning back to her herbs.
Chu Jingcheng frowned. “And her ‘fiancé’ too?”
Yin Qingyue glanced at him. He was jealous, but mostly angry.
“What do you mean? Fiancé?”
“Don’t you know?”
“So he came too.” Her tone turned icy. Those two, both came together—good. She wouldn’t have to act twice.
Chu Jingcheng, displeased, said, “Yin Qingyue, remember, you’re my consort. If you waver, I won’t forgive you.”
“Waver? That Xiao Chengli could make me waver? If that were true, I wouldn’t have nearly died before.”
“What do you mean?”
She swallowed the words, only saying: “We’ll deal with this later. Let them into Northern Hao. I’ll handle it. Anyone who offends me, I won’t spare a single one.”
Chu Jingcheng was annoyed. “It’s really your fiancé. Let him in? I’m not happy.”
Seeing his jealousy, she quickly said, “Relax. He’s after my sister. Do you not understand me? You know who’s in my heart.”
“Believe me. Let them come. I want to see what they try. I can’t let the Xize grudge go unpunished.” She flashed a ruthless glint.
Chu Jingcheng understood—she just wanted to deal with these two scoundrels.
“I trust you, Yin Qingyue. But if he dares to harm you, I’ll intervene,” he said.
“I know,” she replied.
“How you deal with the scoundrel is up to you. But stay away from that man. Send others if needed. The whole Prince Jing estate can obey you.”
His words were both commanding and gentle. The look in his eyes was protective. Anyone who bullied Yin Qingyue would be defying him.
He held her close, whispering, “Now that Leng Feng and Ding Ying are married, it won’t be long before I take you as my wife.”
“How did we get to this topic?”
“Nothing. I just meant, Leng Feng and Ding Ying finally became a couple. So I believe you and I will too,” he said, filled with anticipation.
Yin Qingyue remembered the emperor’s recent visit and said, “By the way, Your Highness, your father came here last time.”
“The Emperor? What did he say?” Chu Jingcheng’s face turned serious.
“Nothing much. He asked a few questions, probably upset that you acted first and reported later. But he didn’t make things difficult, just asked a few questions and left.”
“Just a few questions? Be honest. Don’t hide anything. What exactly did he ask?”
Seeing his dark, intense gaze, Yin Qingyue felt a chill. She understood clearly.
After a pause, she said, “Don’t worry. My father-in-law didn’t trouble me. He probably came to see you. You just weren’t there. He asked whether, if you weren’t Prince Jing, the future heir, I would still stay by your side.”
Chu Jingcheng didn’t fully believe her. His rational mind reminded him the emperor was suspicious by nature. But her answer must have satisfied the emperor, otherwise he wouldn’t have returned empty-handed.
“Yin Qingyue, since the Emperor returned to the palace, he didn’t make things difficult. Your answer must have satisfied him, but also made him concerned,” he analyzed.
“Why so?”
“The emperor is always suspicious. If he asked that question, he must have had a partial answer in mind. If your answer didn’t satisfy him, he wouldn’t have returned without acting,” Chu Jingcheng said.
Yin Qingyue smiled slightly. Indeed, they were father and son.
