She saw the seriousness in his eyes. Every word he spoke warmed her heart. No matter how bitter her days had been recently, hearing those words made her feel comforted.
“Is it really worth it, for you to do all this for me?” Yin Qingyue asked, her heart already stirring with emotion.
Chu Jingcheng held her hand tightly. “After all that’s happened, do you still not trust my words?”
She smiled faintly. Chu Jingcheng had already given her the answer. Now, she was tired and didn’t want to hide anymore.
After a moment, Chu Jingcheng asked, “Yin Qingyue, tell me—why did you leave? Was it really because your father sent someone to kill you?”
“No,” she said, her expression suddenly darkening as she turned away.
Sensing something, Chu Jingcheng asked, “If it wasn’t for that reason, then why? Was it because of Mei’er?”
Yin Qingyue didn’t intend to hide anything. “Yes. One of the reasons I left was because of Mei’er. I said before that I believed Shangguan Jiaoran would kill her, so I left to secretly investigate her murderer. Now, I’ve found the culprit—it’s Prince Yi.”
“How do you know it’s Prince Yi?” Chu Jingcheng asked, though he had already discovered it himself. He simply hadn’t told Yin Qingyue yet, and since she hadn’t appeared, he never had the chance.
Yin Qingyue couldn’t reveal her ability to read minds. Hesitating for a moment, she said, “I overheard it by accident when I went to Prince Yi’s residence.”
“You went to Prince Yi’s residence? What for?” He already suspected, but he asked anyway.
She turned to him. “You already guessed, why are you asking?”
“I just wanted to be sure. Since you said so, then the itching powder on Prince Yi was also your doing?”
“Yes, but that’s his own fault.” Yin Qingyue said this with a hint of hatred for Prince Yi, but she also considered the consequences—if she killed him, many innocent people would suffer.
Chu Jingcheng nodded. Indeed, Prince Yi had brought it upon himself.
“If I’m right, you must have already had a plan against Prince Yi, haven’t you? With your personality, you wouldn’t just find out he killed Mei’er and only sprinkle him with itching powder, right?”
“Of course. I couldn’t kill him, nor could you, so I left it to Shangguan Jiaoran.”
Hearing this, Chu Jingcheng was a bit puzzled. “You left it to Shangguan Jiaoran? That mind of hers—she couldn’t possibly kill Prince Yi.”
“Who said I asked her to kill him?” Yin Qingyue smiled. “I just told her that if she didn’t want to marry him, she’d have to find a way. But you’re right, she’s a bit dim, so I helped her think of a method.”
“What method?”
“I just told her a few herbs to put into Prince Yi’s medicine. When the doctor examines him, it’ll be clear he can’t have children, and their marriage will be called off,” she said with a slightly mischievous smile.
Chu Jingcheng was not foolish—he understood immediately what she meant. He teased her with a smile, “Clever plan, but from what I see, the emperor won’t revoke the arranged marriage. Prince Yi’s reputation will be ruined.”
“You understand things so quickly, Prince Jing,” she said.
“Do you take me for a fool? Your little schemes—I see through them all,” he said, moving closer, his gaze darkening. “After so long apart, it seems I need to teach you a lesson.”
“What do you mean?”
“Return with me,” he said simply.
Hearing this, Yin Qingyue’s gaze dropped slightly. She hesitated—she still had concerns. Her crisis wasn’t fully resolved yet.
Seeing her hesitation, Chu Jingcheng spoke firmly, “Yin Qingyue, rest assured. With me here, nothing will happen to you.”
“I’m not worried about that. I’m worried about Prince Yi. If you take me out, he’ll probably ask me to heal him. The one who killed Mei’er… he expects me to treat him? Is that possible?”
Now Chu Jingcheng understood her worry. He smiled. “If you don’t want to heal him, let him suffer. The goddess doctor can’t cure every illness. Regardless, you’re coming with me today, no matter what.”
Seeing the determination in his eyes, Yin Qingyue realized he would not take no for an answer. She sighed, knowing she had only spoken of her worries, not her unwillingness.
“All right. I’ll go with you.”
Finally, Yin Qingyue relaxed, and Chu Jingcheng’s lips curved into a smile.
Soon, the carriage from Prince Jing’s mansion arrived. Before leaving, Yin Qingyue removed her disguise. Her delicate face was revealed—a sight so unfamiliar even to herself after so many days of hiding.
Chu Jingcheng couldn’t help but kiss her forehead gently. “No matter what, you are the most beautiful woman in my heart. Even if you were to become plain one day, my heart would never change.”
“If that day comes, perhaps you would have already forgotten me,” she said.
“No, I swear to the heavens—if…”
Before he could finish, Yin Qingyue covered his mouth. “I don’t need your oath. I already trust you.”
They smiled at each other.
Exiting the room, the innkeeper froze upon seeing her. Not just him—the staff were all stunned. They could not believe their eyes. The ugly maid was gone.
How could a woman who was so ugly moments ago suddenly be this beautiful?
Chu Jingcheng noticed their gazes and said, “Look again, and I’ll gouge out your eyes.”
“I-I understand. But… who is this lady?” the innkeeper asked.
Yin Qingyue smiled. “Innkeeper, you don’t recognize me? I’m the ugly maid!”
“What? You… you are the ugly maid?”
“Yes, it’s me.”
The innkeeper stared at her, still half in disbelief. The transformation was incredible.
Amidst his astonishment, Yin Qingyue said, “I won’t stay here anymore. Thank you for taking care of me during this time.”
“You… you’re joking. You are Prince Jing’s person. I wouldn’t have dared let you serve here otherwise.”
“I am not Prince Jing’s person. Why would you fear?”
Hearing this, Chu Jingcheng stepped forward, wrapping his arm around her waist. “If you’re not mine, then whose are you?”
Yin Qingyue had no answer and could only smile helplessly as he led her out. In public view, his embrace was intimate. Everyone knew Prince Jing was cold and ruthless, never allowing a woman close—yet now he protected Yin Qingyue so carefully.
Everyone realized—Chu Jingcheng only treats one woman like this. Could this be the goddess doctor who returned from Xize?
Chu Jingcheng took Yin Qingyue back to his suburban mansion. The guards were stunned—hours ago, he was still lamenting over finding her, and now he returned smiling, with her by his side.
The guards saluted. “Greetings, Prince Jing, greetings, Miss Yin.”
Yin Qingyue smiled faintly. “I’m not your princess, no need to salute me.”
“Eventually, you will be,” one guard replied.
Chu Jingcheng smiled with satisfaction. “I am pleased with your words. Rewards will be given accordingly.”
“Thank you, Prince,” the guard said quickly.
Yin Qingyue couldn’t do anything about Chu Jingcheng, but seeing him so happy, she decided to let it be—a way of compensating him for the time he spent searching for her.
Once inside, Yin Qingyue felt a tinge of sadness. Mei’er was gone. Things seemed to have changed here.
“If only Mei’er were here…” she whispered.
Knowing she would feel this way, Chu Jingcheng said, “Don’t worry. Even though Mei’er is gone, I will stay by your side. You will never be alone.”
“How could you possibly always be with me?”
“I said I would. And I will,” he said firmly.
Yin Qingyue smiled, comforted.
After a moment, Chu Jingcheng asked seriously, “Qingyue, since I’m willing to give everything for you, if one day I am no longer Prince Jing, just Chu Jingcheng, an ordinary man… will you still want me?”
Yin Qingyue didn’t understand. “What are you saying? You are Prince Jing…”
“Just answer me. Will you want me or not?”
Understanding, she smiled. “Even if I didn’t want you, you’d still come for me. So… yes, I want you.”
Chu Jingcheng was deeply moved. He held her in his arms again, whispering, “Having you in this life is enough for me.”
“Do you say this to other women?”
“No, only you. Only you have this honor. I promised before, and it’s just for you.” He spoke tenderly. Yin Qingyue smiled in his arms, feeling warm inside.
After a while, she lifted her head, looking into his deep eyes. “Chu Jingcheng, promise me—you will never leave me, no matter what happens.”
“This should be said by me to you. From now on, you cannot disappear silently. Otherwise, I will search the world to find you. If that happens, it will be you who suffers.” His tone carried a dangerous edge.
Yin Qingyue only smiled. She knew if she truly disappeared, he would search the entire world to find her.
