The elderly woman was extremely moved after hearing this, grabbing Yin Qingyue’s hand and thanking her, “Miss, you are truly a good person.”
Over the past few days, Yin Qingyue had heard similar words many times. For a simple family like theirs, this was the highest praise they could offer.
She administered some medicine to the boy, touched his forehead with the back of her hand, then instructed someone to bring some supplies and clothing. She told the elder, “Use these items and clothes for now. If it’s not enough, I’ll have more sent. Also, your grandson mustn’t catch a cold—make sure he wears these clothes.”
Seeing so much food and supplies, the elder was deeply moved, tears welling up in her eyes.
After giving instructions, Yin Qingyue went to treat other refugees. There were so many that she and a few doctors spent the entire afternoon and still hadn’t finished.
Her medical skill left the accompanying doctors dumbfounded.
“Miss Yin, your medical skills… I truly admire you!”
“Yes, the title ‘divine doctor’ is well deserved.”
“If only we had even a fraction of your skill…”
…
Every word spoken by the doctors praised her.
Yin Qingyue humbly replied, “You all flatter me. Compared to you, how could my skills possibly match yours?”
“Miss, you truly are a divine doctor! Why not stay in our county?”
“Yes…”
Yin Qingyue simply smiled politely and didn’t respond further.
After temporarily alleviating the illnesses of the people, she was exhausted. Back at the county magistrate’s residence, she immediately arranged for medicine to be prepared and delivered to the refugees.
While writing prescriptions, she handed them to Cailian to collect from the pharmacy. But her fatigue was visible, and Cailian noticed.
Setting down the pile of prescriptions, Cailian approached Yin Qingyue and said, “Miss, you should rest a bit. You’ve spent the whole day treating patients, and now there’s still work to do. You need a break.”
“I’m fine. Their matters are more important,” Yin Qingyue continued writing.
“Miss, it’s not that I’m meddling, but with so many refugees, if you don’t take care of yourself, you’ll soon be exhausted. Then who will treat them?”
“Don’t worry. I know my own limits.”
Next, Cailian disregarded Yin Qingyue’s protests and took the brush from her hand. “Miss, just listen to me. Even if it’s only for an hour, you should rest.”
Seeing the brush taken away, Yin Qingyue could only smile wryly and sigh, “Alright, alright, I’ll listen. You’re becoming more like Meier every day.”
“Meier? You’ve mentioned her often. She must be very important to you.”
“Yes, she is indeed important to me,” Yin Qingyue replied with a faint smile.
“I really envy Meier, but I envy Prince Jing even more.”
“Prince Jing? Why do you envy him?” Yin Qingyue asked, curious.
Cailian spoke with admiration while tidying the table. “I envy Prince Jing because he’s with you, Miss Yin. He’s so handsome, and you’re so outstanding. You two together are a perfect match. I’d envy anyone to have your company, Miss Yin.”
Hearing this, Yin Qingyue laughed silently. This little girl’s thoughts were simple; she didn’t know how “annoying” Chu Jingcheng could be.
Cailian continued, “Also, I envy you, Miss Yin. You’re so beautiful, skilled in medicine, and clever. I’ll never match up to you in my lifetime.”
“You little thing, why are you talking so much today!” Yin Qingyue teased, but she was secretly pleased with the praise.
Cailian smiled blankly. “Now that Lord Kong is dead, everyone is happy—including me. When I’m happy, I talk a lot. Miss Yin, please don’t mind!”
“Of course not,” Yin Qingyue said.
At that moment, Chu Jingcheng suddenly arrived. Seeing Yin Qingyue smiling, he asked, “What’s making you so happy?”
Yin Qingyue looked at him, surprised he came at this moment. She only said, “Nothing, I was just talking with Cailian and feeling cheerful.”
“Talking?” Chu Jingcheng glanced at Cailian. “Cailian, what were you talking to Miss Yin about?”
Cailian bowed her head respectfully and began to answer, “Just now—”
“No need to say,” Yin Qingyue immediately interrupted, instructing Cailian, “Go collect the medicine and have it delivered to the people.”
Cailian nodded. “Alright, I’ll go. I won’t disturb you and Prince Jing,” and took the pile of prescriptions downstairs.
Chu Jingcheng’s brows furrowed slightly as he walked up to Yin Qingyue, half-smiling, and asked, “It seems you two were talking about a secret, and now you won’t let me know. Tell me honestly, Yin Qingyue. I want to hear it.”
Could it be that Cailian admired him and also admired her?
Yin Qingyue changed the topic, asking, “By the way, how’s the porridge distribution, Prince Jing?”
He already knew she was deflecting. He didn’t fall for it and walked over to her, a sly smile on his lips. “Yin Qingyue, you’re always like this. When I want to know something, you never tell me and make me guess.”
“When did I make you guess?”
“Then tell me—what were you just talking to Cailian about?”
“When did you start caring about these little things?” Yin Qingyue said.
“Your matters are never little to me,” Chu Jingcheng said earnestly, his deep eyes fixed on hers with intensity.
Yin Qingyue’s heart raced. Meeting those eyes, her face heated, and she quickly turned away, whispering, “Prince Jing, stop joking. Right now, the people are the most important.”
Seeing her like this, he was clearly pleased, smirking. “When did you start feeling embarrassed?”
“Why wouldn’t I?”
Chu Jingcheng suddenly hugged her from behind, leaning close to her ear. “Tonight, I’ll make you embarrassed.”
Yin Qingyue tried to push him away, but he caught her.
“Why so impatient?” Chu Jingcheng teased mischievously.
“You’re so shameless,” she shot him a look.
But Chu Jingcheng wasn’t giving up. He lifted her into his arms and said wickedly, “Then I’ll show you shamelessness.”
“You… let me go!”
“Nope,” he said, tossing her onto the bed.
Yin Qingyue pushed him with effort. “Stop it! Someone might see!”
“Who would?” he said.
Just then, a young kitchen boy entered with the food and froze at the scene.
Seeing him, Yin Qingyue quickly pushed Chu Jingcheng aside.
As for Chu Jingcheng, a vein popped on his forehead. Sitting up, he glared at the boy, displeased. “Things never go as planned. Always spoils the fun.”
Indeed, last time at the inn, a waiter walked in. Now, this kitchen boy—no matter how patient Chu Jingcheng was, it was gone.
The boy quickly apologized. “Prince Jing, Miss Yin, I didn’t mean it.”
“Fine. I’m used to it,” Chu Jingcheng said unhappily, but turned to Yin Qingyue softly, “You’ve worked hard today. Go rest early.”
After saying this, he left in frustration.
Yin Qingyue could tell his mood was ruined by the boy, but she thought the timing was fortunate. She smiled at him and said, “Set the food down.”
“Miss Yin, I didn’t mean it.”
“I know. It’s not your fault. Prince Jing just has a temper.”
The boy, still embarrassed, awkwardly smiled, set the food down, and left.
Yin Qingyue also felt slightly embarrassed—always “bumped into” such situations, it was like a curse. She could only smile wryly.
Night had fallen. The county magistrate’s residence was quiet. Without Kong Xian and the Kong family, it felt like a different place.
Yin Qingyue was bathing in a wooden tub, Cailian having added many flower petals.
She closed her eyes, thinking about the events since leaving the palace. Most puzzling was who had attempted to assassinate Prince Jing.
After thinking, she still couldn’t figure it out, but she had a bold guess.
Prince Jing was a royal prince. According to the palace dramas she had seen in her modern life, the struggle between princes was fierce. Could it be that another prince wanted to harm Prince Jing?
At that moment, Cailian, thinking she had fallen asleep, asked softly, “Miss Yin, are you asleep?”
“No.”
“What are you thinking about, then? Prince Jing?”
“Nonsense.” She opened her eyes and smiled at Cailian, a truly captivating expression.
Cailian was stunned. Any woman would be jealous of her beauty.
“Miss Yin, you are so beautiful.”
“You little flatterer,” Yin Qingyue said. “Now, help me get my clothes.”
“Alright.”
After bathing, Yin Qingyue felt a little dizzy and went to bed. She had Cailian light some sandalwood incense to help her sleep.
The next day, Yin Qingyue rose early. She didn’t go to distribute medicine herself, sending Cailian instead, while she went to the dance house.
At the entrance, the dancers rushed over as soon as they saw her, their eyes full of admiration.
“It’s Miss Yin!”
“Miss Yin, why are you here?”
Yin Qingyue smiled politely and asked, “By the way, is Miss Yuelan here?”
“She’s resting in the back courtyard,” Mother Gu suddenly appeared, beaming with gratitude. “Miss Yin, thanks to you, her foot is almost healed. She might be able to dance again soon.”
“That’s good. I have something I want to discuss with Miss Yuelan.”
“Alright, I’ll take you there,” said Mother Gu, ushering her to the back courtyard while keeping the other dancers away.
