The countryside was quiet.
When Chu Jingcheng crossed the forest, a scene struck him like a poisoned thorn, deeply piercing his heart.
He didn’t understand why something was tormenting him—an emotion quietly growing, wrapping itself around his heart.
“What’s going on? Why is the Divine Physician hugging the Crown Prince? Is the Crown Prince trying to compete with Prince Jing over a woman?” Leng Feng said, displeased.
Prince Jing watched silently, struggling to suppress his inner dissatisfaction. He wanted to ask himself why it wasn’t him holding Yin Qingyue, but Nangong Xiao instead.
Why did Nangong Xiao and Yin Qingyue cling so tightly together? Why did the scene burn his eyes so painfully? Chu Jingcheng’s gaze lingered, unable to leave.
“Could it be… because he saved her, that’s why she’s hugging him?” Prince Jing‘s mind spun through countless possibilities, only to be defeated by that one explanation.
“Yin Qingyue… you woman…” Chu Jingcheng muttered, feeling as though his heart had been torn apart. Such pain, he would never forget in his lifetime.
“Your Highness?” Leng Feng slowly approached, his eyes filled with disappointment, mingled with disgust and jealousy.
“This woman is unbearable! Prince Jing has saved her time and again, yet she treats him like this. It’s completely unreasonable!” Leng Feng seethed, wishing he could rush forward. It was the first time he had seen Prince Jing so disappointed—and it was because of this woman.
“I must avenge Prince Jing! We traveled all night to save her, and now she’s hugging someone else?” Leng Feng could no longer contain himself.
“Don’t go. Prince Jing has his own plans,” Leng Yi said softly.
Chu Jingcheng now felt a twinge of regret. If he had arrived earlier at Luochen Courtyard, perhaps he would have been the one standing there.
“Heh. Let’s go,” Chu Jingcheng said coldly, his eyes sharp.
“Yes, Your Highness,” Leng Feng replied quietly.
“Who’s there?”
An elderly man with a head of white hair stepped forward.
“Stop! Who are you?” Leng Feng asked with a smile.
“I’m a carriage driver from the capital. Just my luck today—I earned nothing, and the carriage is gone,” the driver said awkwardly.
“Who told you to wait behind Luochen Courtyard?” Chu Jingcheng noticed blood stains on the man and the strange expression on his face.
Leng Feng drew his sword, swinging it back and forth.
“Swords and knives have no eyes.”
“I don’t understand a word of what you’re saying. I’m just a driver! What Luochen Courtyard? I have nothing to do with any of this!”
“Dare lie in front of Prince Jing? Have you eaten too much? Do you wish to die?”
“Master, spare me! I only took the money and brought her here. I had nothing to do with the rest!” The driver fell to his knees, eyes spinning wildly.
“You want me to spare you? Fine. Tell me who paid you to do this, or you’re dead,” Leng Feng sneered.
“It was the Third Prince. He told me to kill the other driver, then take two women to the countryside. He promised me a huge sum, and threatened my family if I refused!”
Prince Jing observed him thoughtfully.
“Kill him!” Chu Jingcheng said with a smile.
“Yes, Your Highness!”
“I didn’t lie! It really was the Third Prince! Why do you still kill me?” The driver’s eyes turned red as he suddenly drew a dagger and lunged at Chu Jingcheng.
In a swift motion, the dagger was struck from his hand, clattering to the ground. The driver collapsed, lifeless.
“Miss, look! Something’s happening over there,” Mei’er pointed in another direction.
Yin Qingyue quickly released her hand. Earlier, as if bewitched, she had hugged Nangong Xiao. Could it be that years without a man had made her so desperate? But surely not to this extent.
“Isn’t that Prince Jing?” Yin Qingyue slowly walked toward them.
“Your Highness, the Divine Physician is coming!” Leng Feng said excitedly. Perhaps Prince Jing still had a chance with Yin Qingyue.
“What happened here? Isn’t that the driver from earlier? How is he dead?” Mei’er asked, shocked.
From the moment Yin Qingyue approached, Chu Jingcheng’s gaze had never left her.
“What are you doing here?” Yin Qingyue said coldly, spreading her eyes.
Chu Jingcheng’s lips curved slightly as he looked at her meaningfully, as if to say: This question should be mine to ask you.
“This driver came from your side. He seemed suspicious, so we detained him,” Leng Feng said mockingly.
“What do you mean?” Nangong Xiao asked anxiously.
“So the Crown Prince is here too?”
Yin Qingyue glanced at Prince Jing. That burning gaze seemed familiar. She wondered why Chu Jingcheng was here—it couldn’t be by chance. If it was to save her, it was plausible he had followed her all the way here.
Yet she couldn’t believe that Chu Jingcheng would do something like this for her. Apart from Nangong Xiao, she didn’t think Prince Jing would act this way.
“Could you explain what you meant earlier?” Nangong Xiao asked with a smile.
“This driver was arranged by the Third Prince. The previous driver was already dead. Even the plan to bring the Divine Physician to the countryside was his doing.”
Leng Feng’s words surprised Nangong Xiao. His brother was supposed to be handling affairs in Xize; palace news couldn’t travel so fast. If not for a leak, he wouldn’t have known.
“Does the Crown Prince not believe Leng Feng?”
“Of course not. It’s just hard to believe the Third Prince would do this. He’s handling Xize’s governance and isn’t in the capital. Why would he do this? Besides, there’s no benefit to him in Yin Qingyue’s safety,” Nangong Xiao said.
“That’s the Third Prince’s business. We don’t know,” Leng Feng said with a smile.
“If there’s nothing else, we’ll leave,” Prince Jing said, turning to depart. Yet the embrace between Yin Qingyue and Nangong Xiao lingered in his mind.
“Prince Jing, please explain this matter to me when you have time!” Nangong Xiao said, a faint cold smile on his lips.
He could tell from Prince Jing’s gaze that Chu Jingcheng also cared for Yin Qingyue.
Chu Jingcheng wasn’t from Xize. If he came to the countryside, it had to be for Yin Qingyue.
“That scene earlier… it must have been provocative. I wonder what Prince Jing thought?” Nangong Xiao noted that Chu Jingcheng’s gaze had never left Yin Qingyue.
“I have no thoughts. Crown Prince, please don’t misunderstand,” Chu Jingcheng quickly returned to composure.
Yin Qingyue heard his words clearly.
“Miss Yin, you should maintain decorum. A certain degree of restraint is necessary,” Chu Jingcheng said coldly.
“Then, Prince Jing, please consider matters objectively. Some things cannot be judged by appearances,” Yin Qingyue said, a flash of anger in her eyes that quickly faded.
“Yin Qingyue, do you dislike me that much?” Chu Jingcheng couldn’t understand. He had been admired by so many, yet only Yin Qingyue ignored him—and even hugged Nangong Xiao in front of him.
