The moment Lin Tianyue saw the mischievous smile on Zhang Qiao’s face, he understood.
She must’ve argued with someone again while he was gone.
Otherwise, why would she suddenly be so competitive for no reason?
His expression cooled, and he shot back evenly, “No matter what she gives birth to, it’s my wife who gives birth to it. Even if it’s a monkey, I’ll still like it and dote on it.”
Zhang Qiao sat on the edge of the bed and kicked his calf lightly with her foot. “You’re the one giving birth to a monkey!”
“Don’t move around. Hurry up and drink the chicken soup—good for your body.”
He was holding a freshly ladled bowl of chicken soup, about to hand it to her, when he suddenly remembered the doctor’s instructions.
She couldn’t be tired.
She couldn’t be in a bad mood.
She couldn’t be startled.
So he pulled his hand back again. “Forget it. Just sit there and don’t move. I’ll feed you!”
Zhang Qiao: What the heck? He’s going to feed her?!
This rough guy is improving a little too fast, huh!
“No need—”
“Be good. Drink it.” He brought a spoonful of fragrant chicken soup to her lips. Meeting his firm gaze, she could only swallow the soup with tears in her eyes.
Right after that, he picked up a piece of beef for her, tore off some steamed bun, handed it over, and even asked if the bun was too hard and whether she wanted it soaked to soften it.
Suddenly treated like royalty, Zhang Qiao got goosebumps all over.
The old woman nearby looked even more irritated. At this moment, Zhang Qiao noticed another pregnant woman sitting alone on the bed, so she gave Lin Tianyue a look. “There’s so much chicken soup—go pour that sister a bowl too.”
Having to protect the pregnancy all alone, with no one by her side—clearly, she wasn’t treated well at home either.
The woman next door tried to refuse, but Lin Tianyue obediently poured her a bowl anyway, added some dishes, and even stuffed a steamed bun into her hand. “There’s nothing fancy—just make do.”
Not far away was the delivery room, where a woman in labor was screaming in agony.
It was Lin Tianyue’s first time hearing sounds like that. They made him deeply uncomfortable.
When he turned back to Zhang Qiao and the pregnant woman in the room, his heart softened even more.
So childbirth really was like walking through the gates of hell. He didn’t have to suffer this pain—so as a man, he needed to work harder and help more.
The smell of food was too tempting. The old woman swallowed repeatedly. She’d thought that since Zhang Qiao had shared with the other pregnant woman, she’d surely get some too.
Who knew—there wasn’t any for her at all.
Unable to hold back, she shamelessly said, “This chicken soup smells pretty fresh.”
“Mhm.” Lin Tianyue kept feeding Zhang Qiao spoonful after spoonful, reminding her, “Drink more. Finish it all. Otherwise it’ll be a waste if it gets poured out later.”
When the old woman heard that they’d rather pour it out than let her have a taste, she smacked her lips unhappily. “Young people these days really don’t know how to live frugally.”
The pregnant woman next door couldn’t stand listening anymore and shot back for them, “You can’t say that. You can tell at a glance they’re capable of earning money. If you can earn, you can spend. Otherwise, even if you wanted to waste, you wouldn’t have the chance.”
As she spoke, she smiled ingratiatingly at Zhang Qiao. “Sister, what does your family do?”
Zhang Qiao was already full and pushed Lin Tianyue’s hand away. “We run a feed factory—just getting by.”
“Oh! You own a factory? No wonder you’re so generous! The two of you are such a fine-looking couple—clearly not ordinary people!”
The two women chatted back and forth. Lin Tianyue smiled wryly. As for the old woman, her nose was practically crooked with anger.
What was even more infuriating was that after waiting over two hours, the old woman’s daughter-in-law finally gave birth. She rushed off happily to welcome her grandchild—only to be told by the doctor that it was a girl.
The old woman nearly fainted from rage. When the mother and baby were wheeled out together, she didn’t even glance at the child. She grabbed her things, cursed under her breath, and left the hospital.
Doctors and nurses in rural areas had long grown used to this kind of thing.
They wheeled the mother back, placed the baby beside her, offered a few words of comfort, and that was that.
But when Zhang Qiao saw this scene, her heart clenched again.
Great. She was officially emo.
It was all Lin Tianyue’s fault—insisting she stay here for the night, leaving her with psychological trauma.
The world she’d transmigrated into was located in the central region of the country. She’d heard before that son preference was especially severe here, but witnessing such a chilling scene firsthand made her feel suffocated.
Why?
Who wasn’t born of a woman?
Men belittling women was bad enough—but women stepping on women themselves…
Before long, the newborn in the room began to cry.
Exhausted, the new mother struggled to sit up as soon as she heard the crying, reaching out to hold the baby.
Lin Tianyue couldn’t bear to watch. He asked, “Where’s your husband? Want me to help you find him?”
But unexpectedly, she waved her hands in panic. “No, no need.”
Zhang Qiao had been lying down, but she suddenly sat up. “Then what are you going to do by yourself?”
“It’s fine, it’s fine… he’s busy.” She fumbled as she tried to soothe the baby. She knew the baby was hungry, but she’d just given birth and couldn’t breastfeed yet, and she hadn’t bought any formula. Listening to the baby cry again and again, she felt like crying too.
After hesitating for a long while, she looked at Lin Tianyue. “Brother… could I trouble you to call my parents’ place for me?”
Lin Tianyue quickly agreed. “Sure.”
As soon as he stepped out, Zhang Qiao heard the woman sigh. “Sigh… it’s my fault for being useless. Who told me to give birth to a girl…”
Heavens! She was actually blaming herself!
Zhang Qiao was so angry she wanted to pinch her philtrum to keep from passing out.
But this was someone else’s family matter. She wasn’t saintly enough to save everyone. Besides, some people’s thinking was flawed at the root.
With an extra baby in the room, the night was noisy—but Zhang Qiao slept surprisingly well, probably from sheer exhaustion.
There was no extra bed, so Lin Tianyue sat on a stool, planning to make do by leaning against her bedside for the night.
…
Meanwhile, back at the Lin household, the three little ones sat around the small square table, all with solemn expressions.
They hadn’t even finished the dinner Uncle Da Lin had brought them.
Uncle Da Lin had delivered bad news: Aunt Qiao’s baby was in danger, so she needed to stay in the hospital overnight and wouldn’t be coming back today. He told them to eat quickly and go to sleep.
But how could they possibly sleep?
Lin Jin’s little face scrunched up as he cried. “Why did Aunt Qiao get sick? She was so happy when she left today. Wuwuwu, I miss her so much. Big Brother, can we go find her?”
Lin Xun frowned deeply. “Third, don’t make trouble. Didn’t Uncle Da Lin say Dad’s there too?”
Lin Jin: “Then aren’t you worried about Aunt Qiao at all? She even said she’d make us lots and lots of yummy food tomorrow. Wuwuwu… why did she suddenly get sick? Who bullied her?”
Lin Xun: “At a time like this, you’re still thinking about food.”
The two of them went back and forth like that. Only the second child, Lin Ran, sat there puffing out his cheeks, completely silent, like he was in a trance.
Others didn’t know—but he did.
Aunt Qiao got sick today. And something happened at the Wang family across the way.
That meant Aunt Yan hadn’t had good intentions. Aunt Qiao must’ve been bullied into illness by her.
This was all his fault.
Why had he trusted that bad woman?
Why hadn’t he told Aunt Qiao sooner?
Why had he held onto illusions, thinking she wasn’t that bad?!
She was an aunt he had always respected and liked. He’d even thought of her as the best candidate to be his mother.
But she had used him—and hurt Aunt Qiao and the baby in her belly.
He hated her to death!
“Lin Ran? Lin Ran!” Seeing him stay silent, Lin Xun nudged him.
Lin Ran suddenly glared at him angrily, nostrils flaring. If you looked closely, even his eyes were red. “Second Brother, are you okay?”
“Lin Ran, what’s wrong with you?”
Lin Jin and Lin Xun asked together.
Lin Ran jumped to his feet. As he turned away, he couldn’t help wiping the corner of his eye with his sleeve, stubbornly straightening his small back. “I’m fine! Go to sleep!”
As if sleeping was the only thing they could do.
Soon, the small courtyard sank into darkness.
After who knows how long, once Lin Ran was sure the eldest and the third were asleep, he carefully sat up.
