Zhang Qiao’s rosy lips parted slightly, looking a little aggrieved, the corners of her eyes tinged red.
Before she could speak, the doctor came out and pointed at Zhang Qiao. “The pregnant woman goes inside and lies down on the bed. You’re her man, right? You—come here!”
Lin Tianyue glanced at Zhang Qiao and was mercilessly called into the office by the doctor.
The doctor kept a stern face, clearly very displeased.
Even with Lin Tianyue’s fierce temper, facing the doctor, he had no choice but to rein himself in.
“Doctor, how is it? Are the baby and my wife okay?” he asked anxiously.
“There’s a bit of bleeding, but it’s not serious. Have you two had sex recently?” the doctor asked coldly, shooting him an annoyed glare.
“No… no,” he replied.
The only time he and Zhang Qiao had ever done it was their first time.
When they got married, Zhang Qiao was already pregnant. He didn’t have much feeling for her back then; even when they slept in the same bed, he had no interest in touching her.
The doctor grew impatient. “She says no, you say no. Either you did or you didn’t! Can’t you be honest? I’ve seen plenty of young couples like you—can’t control yourselves, then when something happens you come looking for the doctor. Take this as a warning. Be more restrained in the future. You’re a man—you need to know how to protect your wife, understand?”
Lin Tianyue was so embarrassed his face turned red, unable to find a word to argue back.
“Understood. Then if it wasn’t that… what else could cause the bleeding?” he asked carefully.
The doctor scribbled on the prescription pad. “There are many possible causes. Have you been overworking lately? Women are more fragile during pregnancy. If the man can do more, then do more—don’t be lazy and treat women like beasts of burden. Women are people too! They need care and companionship! And don’t be arguing all the time—give in to the woman. Keeping a good mood is very important. And laying hands on her is even more unacceptable…”
“I didn’t hit her!” Lin Tianyue protested, feeling extremely wronged.
“Even if you didn’t hit her, yelling at her or scaring her isn’t okay either! Pregnant women can’t be startled or under mental stress. She needs to eat well, stay in a good mood—not be tired, hungry, or exhausted. Remember that?”
“Oh!” He suddenly thought of something. “What about crowded places? Could she get bumped?”
The doctor rolled his eyes at him, as if saying, Are you an idiot?
“How many people would it take to squeeze your wife into a miscarriage? Look at your own problems first!”
Lin Tianyue fell completely silent.
All his attention fixed on the words can’t be startled, can’t be mentally stressed.
So Zhang Qiao’s spotting today—was it because she’d been frightened by Wang Yan and Wang Mingqing?
His fists clenched tightly again. Lin Tianyue was angry at himself for being careless, and even more furious at those two culprits for being so vicious.
This matter absolutely could not be let go!
After leaving the doctor’s office, Lin Tianyue’s brows were knit into a deep frown. Paired with his dark, gloomy face, it made people afraid to get close.
Zhang Qiao lay on the bed and rested for a while. She felt that the earlier discomfort had disappeared, and the bleeding had stopped.
During the examination, she’d already noticed it—there were only a few faint pink streaks, nowhere near as much as she’d imagined.
But since she’d never been pregnant before, Zhang Qiao was still very nervous.
She was feeling completely at a loss when she saw Lin Tianyue walk in with a grim face.
He looked to be in a terrible mood. Normally, Zhang Qiao could joke and laugh with him, but facing that iron-blue expression now, she felt a little afraid, instinctively shrinking back.
She looked at him with caution and worry, afraid he might lash out at her.
“Lin Tianyue… the doctor seemed to say it’s nothing serious. Just need to be careful in the future. You… don’t look at me like that, okay? I’m really scared.”
Her palms were icy cold with tension.
Even though she’d lived in a modern era before, being in this position now still made her feel sad for women of this age.
It was as if women were nothing more than childbearing tools. If the pregnancy went smoothly, fine—but if anything happened along the way, men would most likely blame the woman.
Her chest felt tight. Hugging her knees, she turned her face away, feeling more and more wronged and stifled.
Unexpectedly, Lin Tianyue sat down beside her with a thump. He looked at her deeply for a long moment, then said hoarsely, “Zhang Qiao, I’m sorry… this is my fault.”
“Huh?” Zhang Qiao looked at him in surprise.
Her eyes were full of confusion—how was it his fault?
Lin Tianyue continued, guilt-ridden, “I’ve been too busy lately. If I hadn’t left you alone to go work, you wouldn’t have had to work so hard—taking care of the child, running around handling everything. If I’d been home, that pair of shameless people wouldn’t have dared bully you, and they wouldn’t have scared you…”
As he spoke, he rubbed his handsome face with his big hand, as if making a firm decision. “Zhang Qiao, from now on I’ll try to stay home more to take care of you. Even if I can’t be home, I’ll find a way to get you properly settled. In short, something like today won’t happen again.”
Zhang Qiao: “……”
What was going on here? This was nothing like what she’d imagined.
She’d thought Lin Tianyue would blame her for running around, scold her for squeezing into crowds without knowing her limits—maybe even say something harsher, like calling her a hen that couldn’t lay eggs and wanting a divorce.
But instead, he took all the responsibility onto himself, looking as if he owed her a huge debt.
All her earlier worries vanished. She pushed his shoulder lightly. “Lin Tianyue, are you okay?”
“Huh?”
“Blaming everything on yourself—are you sick or something?”
“It really is my—”
“Lin Tianyue, do you think no matter what happens, someone always has to take the blame? Don’t you know there’s such a thing as accidents in life? Accidents mean things beyond control—sudden events nobody wants to happen!”
Lin Tianyue stopped wallowing in self-blame and looked at her in a daze.
She… wasn’t blaming him?
Zhang Qiao sighed helplessly. Still, his initiative to apologize made her feel surprisingly good.
Looks like she’d underestimated him this time.
Men of this era might be rough, but not all of them treated women as nothing. At least Lin Tianyue hadn’t disappointed her.
“The doctor said this kind of thing is actually very common, with complicated causes. If it’s not serious, there’s no need to dwell on it. Maybe I just got a bit startled today and disturbed the pregnancy. Now that we’ve checked it, we can relax. No need to blame this or that—calm down, it’s really no big deal.”
Zhang Qiao reached up and patted Lin Tianyue’s hair, like petting a big dog.
Honestly, his hair was quite stiff—and a bit long. She’d have to urge him to get a haircut sometime.
Otherwise, it would start affecting his looks.
Lin Tianyue, as if granted a pardon, asked, “Zhang Qiao… you really don’t blame me?”
Zhang Qiao gave him a speechless eye-roll.
His mood instantly improved. Sitting closer to her, he stared at her intently. “Then how do you feel now? Any discomfort anywhere?”
