Wang Yan smiled leisurely. “It’s about time, Director Wang. I’ll be leaving first. I wish you and Zhang Qiao a blissful life together—sweet dreams. Director, when things succeed and you get promoted and make a fortune, don’t forget about me.”
As she spoke, Wang Yan gave Wang Mingqing’s shoulder a flirtatious pat. The lecher grabbed her hand smoothly and rubbed it in his palm. “Don’t worry. You’ve been so good to me—how could I forget you?”
Wang Yan struggled before finally breaking free from that clammy hand.
A wave of disgust churned in her chest.
She stood up, gathered her things, and went to open the door.
But when her hand landed on the doorknob and she pushed, it didn’t budge.
Thinking she hadn’t used enough force, she pushed harder. The door still didn’t move an inch.
“Is this door… broken? Director Wang, come take a look?” she asked anxiously.
Wang Mingqing walked over and twisted the handle, pressing down, lifting up, pushing outward—he shook it several times in a row. The door still wouldn’t open.
“What’s going on? Is the lock broken? Yan’er, sit down first. Don’t panic—I’ll call downstairs.”
He made a call to the front desk, demanding an explanation. The attendant said it might be a faulty lock and asked them to stay calm and wait a moment—they would send someone to fix it right away.
There was still time, and Wang Mingqing didn’t think it was a big deal.
He pressed Wang Yan down onto the bed. “Don’t worry, they’ll come open the door soon. Zhang Qiao lives pretty far from here—she won’t get here that fast. Let’s chat for a bit.”
Wang Mingqing was a lustful man—Wang Yan knew that well. She had no interest in chatting with him.
But given the situation, all she could do was wait quietly for a few minutes.
About three minutes later, footsteps sounded outside. Wang Yan was just about to stand up when suddenly the wooden door in front of her was violently smashed open from the outside.
She jumped in fright, and then four or five uniformed police officers rushed in.
“Don’t move! Hands up!”
Wang Yan and Wang Mingqing were terrified. Before they could struggle, they were forced face-first against the wall and pinned there with brute force.
Wang Mingqing kept shouting that it was all a misunderstanding, that nothing had happened between him and Wang Yan.
Wang Yan was so scared she was on the verge of tears.
But the police quickly found contraceptives in the room, along with a rope and that cup of water laced with unknown drugs.
“With witnesses and physical evidence present, a lone man and woman alone in one room—if this isn’t hooliganism, what is? Let me ask you: do you two have a marriage certificate?”
Faced with the harsh questioning, Wang Yan was completely stunned. Wang Mingqing, a bit more quick-witted, knew how serious the charge of hooliganism was and hurriedly said, “We’re not committing hooliganism… We’re just in a relationship! Yes—dating!”
The police clearly didn’t believe him. Without another word, they slapped handcuffs on both of them and shoved them outside. “Take them away! We’ll interrogate them properly back at the station—let’s see if they don’t confess!”
The commotion of catching “hooligans” was huge. Many guests staying there came out to watch, along with nearby residents who gathered at the entrance of the guesthouse to gawk.
Suddenly, a woman burst out of the crowd. She charged at the pair without any regard, slapping Wang Mingqing across the face like a madwoman, then yanking at Wang Yan’s hair, hurling furious curses as she did.
“You shameless dogs! You tramp—are you that desperate for a man? He’s already engaged and you still throw yourself at him! How can you be so shameless? Shameless! I’ll tear that face of yours apart today! Slut! Bitch! Stealing someone else’s man—may your whole family die horrible deaths!”
The woman causing the scene was none other than Wu Xia, Wang Mingqing’s fiancée, whom he had gotten engaged to not long ago.
Half an hour earlier, Wu Xia had received a phone call at work saying someone had seen her fiancé enter the guesthouse with another woman. Unsure whether it was true, she took leave to come check it out.
She had only just arrived when she saw this unbearable scene. Thinking of how Wang Mingqing usually sweet-talked her and had even tricked her into bed, she was filled with hatred and regret, wishing she could beat the pair of them to death on the spot.
Soon, people pulled Wu Xia away.
But she kept shouting curses, then angrily took off one of her shoes and hurled it at Wang Yan’s head with a loud smack.
Amid the screams of “slut” and “tramp,” Wang Yan let out a shrill cry. A large bump rose on her forehead, clumps of hair were torn out, and she covered her face in utter disgrace. Even when she was shoved into the police car, she still hadn’t figured out what on earth had happened.
She had clearly set a trap for Zhang Qiao—so how was it she who got arrested by the police?
It wasn’t until she saw Zhang Qiao standing at the back of the crowd through the car window that realization dawned on her.
She had been outplayed by Zhang Qiao.
“Let me out! I’m innocent! I’ve been framed!”
She pounded frantically on the window, but no one paid her any attention.
When she kept banging, a police officer barked angrily, “Behave yourself! One more move and we’ll drag you out and shoot you!”
Wang Yan shuddered in terror. Her whole body trembled uncontrollably—and even worse, she spotted her parents in the crowd…
“Mom… I’m sorry.” She wailed, tears streaming down her face.
…
The police took Wang Mingqing and Wang Yan away, but the onlookers continued to chatter excitedly.
Outside the crowd, Zhang Qiao looked refreshed as she high-fived Yingzi. The two exchanged a knowing smile.
Linking arms with Zhang Qiao, Yingzi headed toward the center of the county town, still buzzing with excitement after pulling off something so big.
“Finally made that little slut suffer for once—so satisfying! Sister-in-law, you’re amazing! How did I never realize you were this smart? You saw through Wang Yan’s scheme at a glance! I seriously worship you!”
It turned out that an hour earlier, Zhang Qiao had gone to find Yingzi and asked her to accompany her to the guesthouse front desk to check the registration for Room 305.
Sure enough, the person staying there wasn’t Lin Tianyue at all—it was Wang Mingqing.
Wang Mingqing usually acted high-profile. He’d recently gotten engaged to a fiancée who worked at the hospital—everyone knew about it. There was only one hospital in the county. One phone call to check and notify Wu Xia was done in minutes.
Of course, during that time, Zhang Qiao also made an anonymous report, accusing someone of engaging in improper relations at the guesthouse.
In those days, the crime of hooliganism carried heavy penalties, and enforcement was strict.
Once the police showed up, even the guesthouse had to cooperate.
Now that everything was settled and Wang Yan had reaped what she sowed, Yingzi was ecstatic—but Zhang Qiao, the more she thought about it, the more frightened she became.
What if Lin Ran hadn’t chased after her to warn her today? What if she had gone to the guesthouse, been dragged into the room by Wang Mingqing, lost her chastity, and then been caught red-handed by the police?
Wouldn’t she have ended up just like Wang Yan—her reputation in tatters, condemned by everyone?
Her nails dug into her flesh as Zhang Qiao’s heart tightened painfully.
She had no intention of harming anyone, yet others wanted her destroyed.
It seemed she had been far too merciful before.
“Sister-in-law? Sister-in-law?” Yingzi waved her hand in front of her when she saw her spacing out.
Zhang Qiao snapped back to herself and looked at Yingzi gratefully. “Come on—I’ll treat you to something good.”
…
Because plans had changed, Lin Tianyue returned to Xiangshui County half a day earlier than expected.
Not far ahead from the bus station was the market.
Xiangshui County was small—any bit of news would spread like wildfire within an hour.
Even Lin Tianyue, who never liked gossip, heard soon after getting off the bus that a certain Director Wang had gotten into trouble—caught at a guesthouse fooling around with a woman and arrested on the spot.
He couldn’t be bothered with the likes of Wang Mingqing. Trash like that getting into trouble was nothing surprising.
A familiar face approached and greeted him. “Brother Yue, where’ve you just come back from?”
“Jin City.”
“Where’s sister-in-law? I just heard people saying they saw her at Shengmin Guesthouse earlier—hey… Brother Yue, don’t go yet, I’m not done talking—”
