“Hey, you…”

Zhang Ling tried to push him away, bracing her hands against his chest. But one of Jin Quan’s large hands locked tightly around her waist, while the thumb of his other hand slowly rubbed against her wrist as he lowered his head to look at the gold bangle resting on her porcelain-white skin.

She awkwardly tried to pull her hand back, but there was no getting free.

“Not bad. It actually looks pretty good on you.”

After studying it for a while, he raised an eyebrow and blew out a puff of smoke.

She turned her face away, her heartbeat completely out of rhythm, not daring to meet his eyes. “It’s alright. Just wearing it for fun.”

“For fun?” He smirked. “Once you wear it, you’re my wife.”

With a roguish grin, he hooked a finger under her chin and tilted his head to admire her flushed face.

Zhang Ling’s cheeks burned. “Who’s your wife? You’re leaving after the New Year anyway. The girls down south are prettier—go find them.”

Jin Quan frowned. “Going south? Who told you that?”

She looked at him resentfully, thinking, Stop pretending!

It took him a moment, then he understood. “Oh… so you’re worried I’ll run off.”

“Are you going to?”

Meeting her watery, shimmering eyes, Jin Quan grinned. “Yeah. I really do have to leave.”

Her expression immediately changed.

But then he shifted his tone. “Leaving tomorrow morning. Going home for the New Year to spend it with my mom.”

After saying that, he laughed even more shamelessly, clearly enjoying teasing her.

Zhang Ling was furious and shoved him hard. “Yeah, yeah—then hurry up and get lost!”

“What’s the rush? I’ll be back on the third day of the New Year. At the latest, the fifth.” Jin Quan refused to let go, pulling her close until their chests pressed together. Lowering his head, he glanced at where their bodies met. “So? Can you wait? If you can’t, come back with me. Let my mom meet you early.”

Zhang Ling’s heart felt unsettled. Every time she saw him, he set the pace, and she forgot what she had said or done before.

“No… We don’t even have a proper status. What would people think?”

Jin Quan nodded. “True. I haven’t formally proposed yet. Then after the New Year. I’ll bring my mom here, and you two can meet.”

This time, Zhang Ling didn’t refuse. She maintained her composure and nodded.

The moment she nodded, Jin Quan was even happier.

He glanced at the door behind her and gestured. “Open it. Let’s go inside for a bit.”

Her heart tightened. She knew exactly what he wanted to do.

The reason she was wary of him was because he was like a hunter—always waiting for the moment his prey stepped into the trap.

Too purposeful.

She resisted, lowering her head. “Jin Quan, I think we should spend more time getting to know each other.”

“More time?” Jin Quan looked as if he couldn’t endure it any longer. His large hand lifted her firm hips slightly. “You’ve got patience. At your age, if you keep ‘getting to know’ each other, you’ll grow old and wither away.”

Zhang Ling frowned, looking at him resentfully. “I know I’m not young. You don’t have to say it…”

“What are you talking about? I’m the old one. Back in the countryside, men a few years older than me are already grandpas! And I’m still a bachelor.”

Zhang Ling couldn’t help it—she burst out laughing.

But as she laughed, there was a trace of bitterness.

She pushed him aside, took out her keys, and opened the door.

She had planned to leave it slightly open, but the moment Jin Quan followed her in, he shut it and even locked it from the inside.

When Zhang Ling turned around, the sharp click of the lock made her feel as if she were facing a great enemy.

The next second, Jin Quan pulled her over and pinned her against the door, leaning in for a kiss.

Zhang Ling hurriedly turned her head. “No, I… that thing came…”

Her period had started.

This time, she really wasn’t lying.

Jin Quan froze for a moment before realizing what she meant.

“Damn it, your timing is incredible.” He pressed her against the door, lifting her hands above her head and burying his face in her neck, inhaling deeply and greedily.

Zhang Ling felt a little wronged, her voice soft. “I don’t want it either… Can you stop swearing?”

Jin Quan lifted his lust-darkened eyes to meet the moisture in hers. “Fine. I’ll endure it. Then at least give me a kiss.”

He held her chin and kissed her, prying open her lips, plundering freely.

Still dizzy from the kiss, Zhang Ling suddenly found herself lifted upright in his arms. The next moment, she was lying on the only narrow single bed in the room.

The bed was flimsy; when he pressed down on it, it creaked noisily.

“Hey, I said no…”

“I know.”

“Then why are you…”

“Just holding you.”

But was that really just holding?

Her clothes were pushed up, his scorching lips igniting sparks everywhere, each kiss heavier than the last.

Zhang Ling was completely powerless against him. Soon, sweat beaded on her skin. She lay there, soft as melted wax.

The evening glow spread across her face in a rosy haze—whether from heat or sunset, it was impossible to tell. Her hands dug tightly into his broad back. The softness of a woman and the strength of a man overlapped and intertwined like a vivid oil painting.

Feeling her sudden tension, Jin Quan lifted his head, his rough fingers gently wiping the sweat from her temple.

A wicked smile curved his lips.

He kissed her again but didn’t push further. Instead, he lay down beside her, close against her side.

“Honestly, where’s your self-control? We haven’t even done anything and you already…”

Before he could finish teasing, Zhang Ling covered his mouth with her hand. “Please, stop talking!”

That mouth of his—truly unbearable.

Jin Quan obediently fell silent. He simply pulled her into his arms, kissed her once, and the two lay close together, saying nothing, quietly watching the dusk fade outside the window as the sky filled with sunset clouds.

It was about to get dark. Footsteps occasionally sounded outside as people tidied up and prepared to head home for the New Year.

Zhang Ling had calmed down. She sat up and nudged him. “You should go.”

Jin Quan was half-asleep and didn’t want to move. “Let me lie here a bit longer.”

“They’re going to lock up soon. If my brother-in-law comes upstairs, won’t you be embarrassed?”

Anxious, she pushed him again, quickly straightening her rumpled clothes.

Not waiting for him, she got out of bed first and turned on the light.

The brightness made him give up on staying.

He sat up, watching the woman bustling around beside him. “What are you getting?”

With her back to him, Zhang Ling felt shy.

She took two pairs of thousand-layer cloth shoes for men from the cabinet and turned around, handing them to him bashfully.

Jin Quan took them, surprise flashing in his eyes. “You made these?”

She nodded. She had accepted his bracelet and didn’t know how to return the gesture, so she made him two pairs of shoes.

“They’re not worth much. You can wear them when you’re working.”

Jin Quan examined them carefully, even trying them against his feet. They fit perfectly.

“You’re really skillful. The stitching’s even better than my mom’s.”

Embarrassed by the praise, Zhang Ling stepped out again. When she returned, she carried a small bundle in her hands.

“What’s this?”

She placed it on the bed and untied the knots. “I made some pastries. Bring them home for Auntie to try during the New Year. I don’t really know how to make anything else.”

She had prepared the pastries earlier, originally intending to give them to Jin Quan. Since he was going home, she could only have him take them back.

“If I’d known earlier, I could’ve bought Auntie a couple of outfits. Now it’s too late.”

“No need to buy anything. This is more than enough.”

Jin Quan tied the bundle back up neatly.

Then he sat there, looking at Zhang Ling, reached out to take her hand, and gave it a gentle squeeze.
