But this time, when she returned, Zhang Qiao seemed possessed by some strange force. She was clearly the same person, yet her words and actions were so unfamiliar that Lin Tianyue barely recognized her.
She cooked for him, treated the three little ones with gentle care, showed concern for his career, and even accompanied them all the way to the city for medical treatment.
This version of Zhang Qiao felt both strange and warm to Lin Tianyue—and yet made him feel more unsettled than ever.
Unable to find her at the hospital, Lin Tianyue returned to the ward in a disheveled state.
The doctor recommended that the three children stay in the hospital for observation. By nightfall, they were finally able to have some porridge.
Lin Tianyue, however, hadn’t eaten a single thing all day.
“Dad, did Auntie show up?” Lin Xun asked anxiously.
Lin Tianyue didn’t answer directly. Instead, he asked whether the children felt any discomfort. Only when he learned they no longer felt nauseous or had diarrhea did he finally relax.
He reminded the eldest to watch over his two younger brothers while they slept. Lin Xun seemed to understand that his father was about to go looking for someone, so he readily agreed.
After ensuring the children were safe, Lin Tianyue went to meet Chen Gang.
Chen Gang had also been searching, but to no avail. Both men looked a little dejected.
Chen Gang said, “Brother Yue, I told you women shouldn’t be provoked; you have to pamper them. But you didn’t listen! At this hour, where could your wife possibly be alone in the city? She shouldn’t be in any danger, right?”
Lin Tianyue squatted on the ground, smoking. The tip of the cigarette flickered like his restless heart.
Chen Gang suddenly slapped his thigh. “Oh right, Brother Yue, did you give her all the payment for yesterday’s goods? Tell me, could she have run off with the money? Or gone to find Wang Mingqing?”
Lin Tianyue’s sharp eyes shot toward him. Chen Gang quickly smacked his own mouth: “Ptooey! How could your wife be that kind of person? Brother Yue, don’t worry—she wouldn’t!”
Despite saying this, Chen Gang couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for Lin Tianyue.
Beautiful women were dangerous. Even pretending to care about the family almost fooled him—imagine how much more it would hurt Lin Tianyue.
“Brother Yue, don’t be upset…”
Lin Tianyue crushed the cigarette in his hand, stood up, and his towering figure radiated cold menace in the darkness.
“Chen Gang, I’ll borrow your motorcycle!”
The tires roared against the pavement. Lin Tianyue hit the throttle and sped off.
He first went to Zhang Qiao’s parents’ home—but of course, he had no intention of entering properly. He climbed over the wall, pressed against the side of the house, and listened. Zhang Song, her younger brother, was still endlessly cursing him and Zhang Qiao.
The family was cursing and bickering, speaking nothing that made sense—but there was no sign of Zhang Qiao’s voice.
Before leaving, Lin Tianyue even took two old hens from the yard.
Returning home, nothing had changed since he left in the morning.
The lights were off, the doors locked, and there was no sign anyone had come by. Lin Tianyue sat quietly on the bed, draped with a pink mosquito net.
He noticed some changes. Before, the house had always been messy.
Now, everything—inside and outside—was spotless.
The tables had been wiped, the beds freshly made, and even the pillowcases smelled delightfully clean.
Lin Tianyue reached under the bedding and frowned when he felt something hard. He pulled it out—a handkerchief embroidered with small purple flowers, neatly wrapped around a stack of banknotes, tied in a pretty bow in the center.
He unfolded the handkerchief. The money, combined with what remained in his pocket and what he had spent that day, exceeded the 845 he had given her yesterday by twenty yuan.
Clutching the cash, Lin Tianyue’s cold, hard heart was suddenly gripped by someone else’s hand.
He quickly secured the money and kept it on him, then turned on the lights and locked the door.
Suddenly, he heard a voice behind him. Overjoyed, he spun around.
“Zhang Qiao! Where did you go? I’ve been looking all over for you!”
His voice carried relief mixed with irritation—but when he saw who was in front of him, that joy instantly transformed into anger.
It wasn’t Zhang Qiao—it was his neighbor, Wang Yan.
Wang Yan hurried forward. “I heard some noise from your house, so I knew you were back. Tianyue, how are the kids?”
Lin Tianyue’s face darkened as he went to push his motorcycle—but Wang Yan stubbornly clung to him.
“Tianyue, why aren’t you saying anything? By the way, where’s Zhang Qiao? Did she sneak off again? That vixen, I just knew it…”
“Wang Yan!”
Lin Tianyue interrupted her harshly. In the moonlight, his gaze was cold and ruthless, looking at his old friend as if she were nothing but trash.
The look was unbearable for Wang Yan.
But his voice was even colder: “Did you give the three kids the watermelon yesterday? The watermelon had gone bad, it was poisonous—didn’t you know?”
Wang Yan froze, her face blanching. “Tianyue, how could the watermelon be poisonous? Are you listening to that vixen again? I treat Lin Xun and the others like my own children. I would never…”
“You’ve never given birth, never raised a child, never been married—what business do you have with my kids?”
“I…”
Wang Yan had never seen Lin Tianyue so furious. She tried to explain, but he suddenly strode toward her, grabbed her wrist with brutal force.
“Ah! It hurts! Tianyue, let go, my bones are going to break!”
“And that hurts? Did it hurt when you were scheming against my family?”
“Brother Tianyue, listen to me—I really didn’t know about the watermelon…ah!”
Lin Tianyue squeezed her arm with force. Wang Yan was thrown several meters, landing on her tailbone with a jolt.
But worse than the pain was his attitude.
Lin Tianyue looked down at her with contempt. If she weren’t a woman, he would have made her feel the full force of a punch.
“Listen carefully. From now on, the Lin family and the Wang family—don’t interfere with each other. If you spread trouble again, I’ll make your whole family pay!”
Gritting his teeth to control his rage, he refrained from losing control.
The motorcycle roared to life, speeding past Wang Yan so close it nearly grazed her.
Although it didn’t touch her, the speed and sound terrified her, and her scream drew the attention of the neighbors.
“Who’s making such a racket in the middle of the night?”
“Ah, it’s Yan from next door. What’s going on?”
“Wang Yan, get up. Are you okay? Who bullied you?”
Kind neighbors helped the trembling, crying Wang Yan to sit up. A few meters away, the motorcycle’s lights gleamed. The young man sitting confidently on it, legs on the ground, was none other than the notorious neighborhood thug Lin Tianyue—the one everyone avoided like the plague.
