The doctor casually pointed: “See the stairs? Go up there to the second floor, walk to the end, that’s where it is.”
Lin Tianyue followed the direction of his finger, hesitated for a moment, then strode forward.
It was already 10 a.m. The cafeteria had only a few remaining dishes: steamed buns, stuffed buns, fried dough sticks, porridge, and soy milk.
Lin Tianyue’s stomach had been growling for some time. He bought seven or eight buns, carefully choosing different flavors, plus two cups of soy milk. Seeing the cook preparing chicken legs for lunch, he waited a bit longer and bought two large chicken legs as well.
The three children were on a restricted diet and couldn’t eat normal food. The buns and chicken legs were for Zhang Qiao and Chen Gang, while steamed buns were cheapest, so Lin Tianyue only bought two for himself and some pickled vegetables.
After buying everything, he carried the food upstairs. Zhang Qiao and Chen Gang had already completed the children’s hospital admission procedures. When Lin Tianyue arrived outside the room, all three children were lying in beds receiving IV drips.
The doctor was there too, holding the recently obtained lab report.
“Yersinia and Listeria were detected in the intestines. It’s clearly food poisoning. Did the children eat raw or expired food yesterday?”
The doctor patiently asked Zhang Qiao.
“Expired or raw food?” Zhang Qiao glanced at the three children.
Doctor: “Like fruits or vegetables that have been left for too long, or foods with strong cold properties…”
Lin Xun spoke quietly: “We ate watermelon Aunt Yan brought yesterday… does that count?”
The doctor’s expression suddenly changed: “Watermelon? That explains it. Watermelon shouldn’t be left overnight. The flesh will breed bacteria, which can easily cause diarrhea and vomiting, and in severe cases acute uremia, which is very damaging to the kidneys. Parents really should know better—food that’s been left too long should never be given to children!”
Upon hearing the result, Zhang Qiao quickly nodded in agreement: “Yes, yes, rotten fruit should never be given to children. You three remember this—never eat things recklessly, especially if someone else gives them to you.”
Lin Ran recalled the taste of yesterday’s watermelon and said angrily: “I knew it! The first bite tasted a bit off. But Aunt Yan insisted it was fresh. How could she give us poisoned watermelon? Didn’t she always like us so much?”
Lin Xun, being the oldest, realized quickly: “Like us my foot! She’s always liked Dad…”
Lin Jin chimed in: “Exactly! Yesterday when Little Shitou and I were climbing the wall, we saw Aunt Yan’s pigs eating watermelon too!”
Lin Ran exclaimed: “What? She gave us the watermelon meant for pigs? Does she think we’re pigs?”
The doctor sympathetically patted the children’s heads: “Remember, watermelon is cold in nature. Eat less in the future, and never eat it overnight! Got it?”
Chen Gang had been nervously sweating the whole time on Lin Tianyue’s behalf, thinking this could turn out badly—it would wrongly blame Zhang Qiao.
He quickly signaled to the three kids: “Learn your lesson this time! Listen to your parents, especially your mom. We’re not short of money—if you want something, you can get it. Anyone who’s greedy and eats other people’s food, uncle will deal with you!”
The children didn’t dare make a sound, especially Lin Jin, who secretly looked at Zhang Qiao and felt so ashamed he couldn’t lift his head, thinking about how he had acted toward her that morning.
Finally, the mystery was solved. Lin Tianyue stood outside, listening clearly.
He clenched the bag tightly in anger, chest rising and falling. After the doctor finished his instructions and left, he pulled open the door—and saw a man at the entrance with a face as dark as black iron, like a door god, startling her.
Chen Gang quickly pulled him inside.
“Brother Yue, you’re finally back! Look, Brother Yue cares about his wife, he bought buns and big chicken legs for you! See? I told you, Brother Yue has feelings for you!”
Chen Gang hurriedly played the matchmaker, pushing the two of them together.
Lin Tianyue misread Zhang Qiao’s intentions again, embarrassed and blushing, unsure how to speak.
But Zhang Qiao had been waiting for this moment.
The local clinic couldn’t run the tests. She insisted on coming to the hospital to get clarity and to make Lin Tianyue understand whose fault it really was.
Lin Tianyue hesitated, then struggled to say: “You must be hungry… I bought you some food…”
But his shoulder was mercilessly bumped aside by Zhang Qiao, who walked out expressionless: “Sorry, I need to step out for a bit.”
“Where are you going?” Lin Tianyue asked, following. Her normally gentle figure now carried a cold, distant aura, making him nervous.
Zhang Qiao didn’t answer, leaving the room without looking back.
Chen Gang nudged Lin Tianyue again: “Brother Yue, go after her!”
Lin Tianyue hesitated for a moment, then put down the food and followed.
“Zhang Qiao!” he called behind her.
But she didn’t turn back: “Don’t follow me, Lin Tianyue. I hate you. I don’t want to see you right now!”
Lin Tianyue froze. Her tone was full of disgust.
He felt humiliated. He wanted to chase her, but his pride held him back.
His hanging hands unconsciously clenched.
Chen Gang came out and, seeing him still rooted to the spot, stomped his foot in frustration: “Brother Yue, hurry! This is like the emperor doesn’t care but the eunuchs are dying of anxiety! If you don’t chase her now, you might remain single for life.”
Lin Tianyue felt conflicted. Of course, he couldn’t tell Chen Gang that Zhang Qiao had rejected him.
And not just rejected—she clearly despised him!
“Forget it… I’ll wait until she calms down to talk to her.”
Chen Gang went crazy inside, thinking, Forget it, forget it, she earned being single on her own merit, why should I interfere!
But Lin Tianyue was otherwise competent and persuasive; when it came to matters of love, he was utterly clueless.
It was infuriating.
Not only Chen Gang was anxious. Later, when Lin Tianyue returned to the ward, the three kids looked worried.
Lin Ran bluntly said: “Dad, I think Aunt really is angry this time.”
Lin Tianyue grew more annoyed: “Isn’t it your fault for constantly being difficult with her?”
Lin Jin’s eyes were red: “Dad, maybe I should apologize to Aunt? It was my fault today for calling her a fox spirit… Yesterday she even steamed big meat buns for us, they were so delicious. She must be really sad now. Wuwu… how could I be so heartless? What if she leaves?”
Lin Xun also lowered his head, picking at his fingers, thinking silently for a solution.
Chen Gang said: “Brother Yue, look—these kids are more sensible than you.”
Lin Tianyue shot another annoyed look, but when everyone fell silent, he felt even more frustrated.
