The brother and sister were both dramatic—one daring to act, the other daring to believe it.
In the end, Xia Xia seemed to have had her fill. She smacked her little lips, giggling and shaking her head, looking utterly satisfied.
By evening, the restaurant grew busier and busier. Without needing Zhang Qiao to say a word, the three boys volunteered themselves as little waiters.
Carrying dishes, greeting customers—each had a clear division of labor, and they worked with surprising competence.
Even Ren Hong, the restaurant manager Zhang Qiao had just hired, couldn’t stop praising the three children for being so sensible, saying Zhang Qiao had raised her sons exceptionally well.
Holding Xia Xia in her arms, Zhang Qiao smiled with motherly affection.
“Xia Xia, aren’t your big brothers great? Aren’t they outstanding?”
Watching her brothers bustling around, Xia Xia waved her tiny hands, almost as if she wanted to join in.
“That’s right. Your brothers are the most diligent and hardworking. This is what they mean by children from poor families growing up early. Xia Xia, you must learn from your brothers in the future and become a good baby who makes Mommy worry less.”
At this moment, Zhang Qiao felt deeply gratified. Although their family’s conditions were getting better and better, neither the older children nor the younger one showed any signs of being spoiled. On the contrary, they were even more motivated and grounded than before.
Instead, she and Xia Xia had become the leisurely “rich idlers” of the family.
Well, not exactly idle—because accompanying Xia Xia was itself a task that was both exhausting and full of happiness.
That night, Lin Tianyue came home.
Zhang Qiao told him about everything that had happened during the day. Lin Tianyue felt gratified too.
“See? I told you raising sons is reliable. You used to accuse me of favoring boys over girls. Qiao Qiao, I’m not favoring boys over girls. I just hope there are more men in the family. The more men there are, who would dare bully you? When we’re old, you’ll enjoy the happiness of being surrounded by children and grandchildren. You’ll be holding grandsons one after another. Right, Xia Xia? By then, Xia Xia can be an aunt.”
Lin Tianyue was holding Xia Xia up in the air, flying her around.
When he wasn’t home, Xia Xia was closest to her mother. But whenever Lin Tianyue was home, the little girl clung to him as if glued.
No helping it—Lin Tianyue was strong. He held her more steadily and comfortably. Unlike Zhang Qiao, whose arms would get tired quickly; after a while, Xia Xia would start sliding down, her clothes riding up, and her mom wouldn’t even pull them back down for her.
Zhang Qiao sat at her vanity. Having just washed her hair, she was blow-drying it.
The hair dryer buzzed loudly. Xia Xia found it fascinating and kept trying to get closer.
Lin Tianyue carried her over, and Zhang Qiao aimed the dryer at her daughter from a distance.
Xia Xia’s hair puffed up wildly in the wind. As if she’d discovered a new game, she laughed gleefully.
So she made Lin Tianyue play with her again and again.
He flew her through the air, blew her hair, and played with her for over an hour until Xia Xia gradually grew sleepy.
After walking her around to soothe her, Lin Tianyue laid their daughter down on the big bed.
“Qiao Qiao, are you still experimenting?”
Lin Tianyue had been entertaining their daughter all evening while Zhang Qiao stayed busy at the vanity.
Su Yin had already produced ceramic versions of a hair straightener and curling iron, and she’d given Zhang Qiao samples to test.
First, Zhang Qiao straightened her freshly washed hair. Then she curled it.
Throughout the process, Lin Tianyue watched while tending to their daughter.
With straight hair, Zhang Qiao looked pure and graceful—stunningly beautiful. Once she curled it, she took on a different charm, softer and more alluring.
Turning around, Zhang Qiao asked, “Do you think I look better with straight hair or curly hair?”
Lin Tianyue thought for a moment. “Both look good.”
He walked over and touched her wavy curls. “If I have to choose… straight hair. When you straightened it just now, it was so glossy and smooth, like…”
“Like what?”
Seeing his expression, Zhang Qiao could tell he was up to no good.
Lin Tianyue ruffled her hair. “Wife, have you seen that big black dog Chen Gang’s family keeps? Its fur is shiny and sleek…”
The smile at the corner of Zhang Qiao’s lips froze. He really had a way with words.
“You’re the big black dog!”
Lin Tianyue looked confused. “Qiao Qiao, are you mad?”
She shot him a glare through the mirror.
She packed up her things with exaggerated clattering noises.
Startled, Lin Tianyue quickly turned to check on their daughter. Luckily, Xia Xia was sleeping soundly and wasn’t disturbed by ordinary noise.
But he truly didn’t understand. Zhang Qiao could call him a big wolfdog, yet he couldn’t compare her hair to a dog’s shiny fur?
She didn’t know that dog was extremely well cared for by Chen Gang’s parents.
Zhang Qiao went to wash up. Lin Tianyue followed closely behind, tugging at her clothes.
“Qiao Qiao, why aren’t you talking?”
“Get lost!”
With a bang, Zhang Qiao shut the bathroom door. She had thought he’d become more eloquent lately. Turns out, he still couldn’t say anything decent.
Ahhh, so irritating!
When she finished washing up, Lin Tianyue was already in bed. He’d placed their daughter on the innermost side, leaving a large space for Zhang Qiao.
She climbed onto the bed from the foot and lay beside her daughter. It felt a bit crowded, but she didn’t want to pay him any attention.
After a moment, she tugged his share of the blanket toward herself.
They’d just moved into a new house, and blankets were limited, so the two of them had to share one.
A chill hit Lin Tianyue’s shoulder. He quickly scooted closer and hugged her from behind.
Zhang Qiao elbowed him. “Move over! Don’t touch me!”
“Qiao Qiao, I’m cold!”
“If you’re cold, go sleep in Lin Xun’s room!”
“No. I just want to hold my wife while I sleep!”
Lin Tianyue clutched her tightly and pulled the blanket back over them. But as soon as he tugged it over, Zhang Qiao yanked it away again.
He shivered. “Wife, if you don’t give me the blanket, I’ll have to use you to keep warm.”
With her back to him, Zhang Qiao ignored him and even lifted her leg to kick him. Expecting that move, Lin Tianyue reached under the blanket and grabbed her ankle.
With a pull, he dragged her over and pinned her beneath him.
“Kicking your man again? Qiao Qiao, can’t you try a new move?”
He toyed with the curls in her hair. “Alright, alright, I was wrong. Qiao Qiao, curly hair looks better. Let’s go with curls.”
Like the white poodle Director Su had last time.
That part he only thought to himself. He’d realized his wife had double standards—she could call him a dog, but he couldn’t say the same about her.
And whenever he was home, she conveniently stopped soothing the baby herself. All evening she’d been fussing with her hair in the name of ‘experiments.’ Did she think he couldn’t tell she just didn’t want to handle the baby?
But Lin Tianyue didn’t mind her little tricks at all. In fact, he relished them.
What could he do? He was willing to dote on both his wife and daughter. There were four men in the house and only two women—if they didn’t pamper them, who would?
Seeing Zhang Qiao about to speak—and guessing it wouldn’t be anything nice—he quickly kissed her lips.
That kiss stirred something in him.
A light kiss turned into a deep one. He held her close, kissing and sucking, his breath growing hot.
Her lips were sore from his kissing. Annoyed, Zhang Qiao pushed him away and pressed her tingling lips together.
“I call you a rough brute and you won’t admit it. You’ve kissed me till it hurts. Do you even know what you’re doing?”
Lin Tianyue touched her bouncy curls again.
“Then why don’t you teach me, wife?”
