Lin Tianyue suddenly tugged off his pajamas, grabbed her hand, and pressed it against his well-defined chest.
Where Zhang Qiao’s fingertips touched, the muscles felt firm and solid.
“Qiaoqiao, do you remember what I said during the day?”
“Mm… which sentence?”
“I told you—you could touch wherever you like.”
Zhang Qiao’s face flushed. Her fingertips trembled again as Lin Tianyue guided her hand downward.
He lowered his head and bit gently at her earlobe. “Qiaoqiao, a man doesn’t have only one way to make a woman feel good.”
The lights went out, and darkness filled the room, leaving only the soft rustling of clothes being removed…
Because they had gone to bed so late, Zhang Qiao woke up late the next morning.
Their daughter was already beside her, doing her “morning exercises,” her little arms and legs sticking out from the blanket, happily kicking and grabbing. The moment she saw her mother, she broke into a wide smile.
Zhang Qiao’s heart instantly filled with tenderness. She scooped her daughter into her arms and planted a loud kiss on her forehead.
“Xia Xia is such a good girl. You woke up and didn’t even cry to wake Mommy. Mommy loves you!” Zhang Qiao cuddled her daughter and breathed in deeply—the milky baby scent was so addictive.
Lin Tianyue had already left. Zhang Ling came upstairs and brought Zhang Qiao her reheated breakfast.
It was her favorite—dumplings.
When she came over to take the baby, Zhang Ling noticed the gold jewelry resting on the bedside table.
“Oh! Brother-in-law bought these for you, didn’t he? They’re so beautiful. And so many—how much must they have cost?”
Zhang Ling grabbed Zhang Qiao’s wrist and examined the bracelet closely. “Gold really elevates a person. Look how noble it makes my little sister appear.”
Zhang Qiao felt a little shy. “Sister, I’ll give you a bonus at the end of the year. You can buy some too.”
“I don’t need it. These things are expensive. I’d rather save the money and open a shop in the future.”
Zhang Ling wasn’t jealous at all. On the contrary, seeing her sister living well made her especially happy. Especially since her brother-in-law and sister were so loving—it was like a bright beacon, keeping Zhang Ling from losing all hope and expectation for love.
She and Xu Liang might not work out, but there were still plenty of couples in this world who lived well. And not all men were the same.
Speaking of opening a shop, Zhang Qiao’s mind started turning. “Sister, our restaurant hired an especially skilled head chef. He’s great at pastries too. In a while, come with me to Jiangcheng—I’ll have him teach you.”
Zhang Ling’s eyes lit up. “Really? Won’t he think I’m slow?”
“Sister, you’re not slow at all! Later, we’ll hire a Western pastry chef too. You can learn both Chinese and Western styles. Once you’ve mastered them, open your own shop. Let those lousy men realize they can’t reach you!”
Zhang Ling was suddenly full of hope for the future. “I don’t need anyone to chase after me. I just want to live with the same confidence you have.”
As they were chatting, Sister Li knocked and came in. “Sister Ling, Brother Quan came to deliver goods. He’s asking where you are—wants you to come downstairs.”
At the mention of Jin Quan’s name, Zhang Ling’s heart tightened again. “Qiaoqiao, hurry and eat the dumplings while they’re hot.”
She went downstairs, her steps slightly flustered. Zhang Qiao muttered to herself—this Jin Quan really must be intimidating, scaring her sister like that. Maybe they should assign someone else to liaise with him?
Downstairs, Jin Quan stood like a wall, blocking Zhang Ling’s path.
“You’re here.”
Zhang Ling gave him a polite, hostess-like smile.
Jin Quan’s gaze locked onto her. “Taking care of the baby upstairs? Has the little girl gained weight? Haven’t seen her in a while. Why not bring her down for a bit?”
“It’s freezing out. Who carries a baby around outside in the middle of winter?”
“What’s wrong with that? The more you bring them out, the tougher they get. Easier to raise.”
Zhang Ling shot him a complicated glance. In her eyes, this man was brash and rough around the edges.
Who would’ve thought he’d care so much about Xia Xia?
Then again, Xia Xia was like a little doll—one look could melt your heart. Who wouldn’t like her?
“Brother Quan, what did you need me for?”
After she asked, Jin Quan stuffed a bag into her hands.
She opened it for a glance—and quickly tightened the opening in shock.
If she wasn’t mistaken, inside was… women’s underwear?
And purple, at that.
What kind of grown man gives a woman something like this? Isn’t that a bit… shameless?
“Y-you… who told you to buy this?”
“Didn’t I promise last time to buy it for you when I went to the city?”
“I didn’t ask you to!”
“Quit fussing. I bought it for you, so take it. You’re embarrassed? I wasn’t embarrassed buying it.”
He went straight to the backyard to get busy, leaving Zhang Ling standing there with the bag, unsure whether to keep it or throw it away.
When no one was around, she used two fingers to peek at the size.
It was exactly her size.
The storage room downstairs had long been cleaned out. Zhang Ling was staying in one of them. She hurried inside and stuffed the bag onto her bed.
When she came back out, Sister Li asked nosily, “Sister Ling, what did Brother Quan want?”
“Nothing.”
Zhang Ling’s heart was in turmoil. Knowing Jin Quan was in the backyard, she deliberately turned to busy herself elsewhere.
Yet her ears remained tuned to the sounds at the doorway. After a while, hearing familiar footsteps, she came out again and handed Jin Quan a netted bag containing a lunchbox.
“What’s this now?”
Zhang Ling’s face turned slightly red. “Dumplings.”
The smile in Jin Quan’s eyes deepened. Seems he wasn’t the only one who cared.
He took the lunchbox. Seeing Zhang Qiao coming downstairs, he greeted her.
Zhang Qiao hadn’t taken off her bracelet yet. Under the sunlight, it gleamed brilliantly.
“Brother Quan, you haven’t left yet?”
“Just about to.”
“Sister, where did you put the house keys?”
Zhang Ling said, “Oh, in my room.”
“Okay, I’ll go get them.”
Zhang Qiao went into Zhang Ling’s room. Suddenly, Zhang Ling remembered the underwear left on the bed. She abandoned Jin Quan and hurried after her.
But she was still a step too late.
Zhang Qiao found the keys in the bedside drawer—and immediately noticed the pretty little bag on the bed. She picked it up curiously.
At that moment, Zhang Ling rushed in, face flushed, and snatched the bag from her hands.
Zhang Qiao was clueless. “Sister, you bought new underwear? Let me see—it looks like good quality.”
She had seen this brand in Jiangcheng before—it was quite expensive.
Zhang Qiao shook out the purple lingerie set and checked the tag. It was indeed the brand she recognized.
There was a layer of sheer fabric over it, soft in texture and very feminine in design. “Sister, when did you buy this? I didn’t expect you to be secretly so daring. The cup shape is nice—once you put it on, it’ll definitely look sexy.”
Inside, Zhang Ling felt like a thousand horses were galloping wildly, mentally cursing Jin Quan’s ancestors for eight generations.
Openly daring, secretly daring—she didn’t understand any of that. But the lingerie Zhang Qiao was holding, half-sheer and unfamiliar in style, was something she had never seen before.
Did Jin Quan take her for some kind of seductress?
How was she supposed to wear something so revealing?
But Zhang Qiao seemed to like it quite a bit. “Sister, why don’t you try it on? I want to see.”
Zhang Ling’s face turned crimson. She yanked the lingerie back. “Try what? I asked Sister Li to buy me a set—who knew she’d pick something like this? How can this even be worn? Stop embarrassing me.”
As she spoke, she started crumpling it up to stuff it back into the bag.
