The only thing that made Zhang Qiao feel a bit uncomfortable was that when she saw Lin Tianyue again, the two of them didn’t say a word—but both blushed at the same time.

That morning, Zhang Qiao and Lin Tianyue sat across from each other having breakfast, while Zhang Ling played with Xiaxia in her arms.

Usually, the two of them would be talking and laughing, but today’s breakfast was unusually silent.

Zhang Ling looked at Lin Tianyue’s face, then at Zhang Qiao, feeling a little confused.

“Qiao Qiao, did you have a fight with your brother-in-law?”

Zhang Qiao: “Nope.”

Zhang Ling then looked at Lin Tianyue: “Then brother-in-law…”

“Nothing, we’re fine.”

Lin Tianyue finished the porridge in his bowl in two quick swallows and turned to leave.

Zhang Ling was even more baffled. Fine? This is what he calls fine?

However, by the afternoon, the two of them interacted naturally again. More precisely, their relationship seemed even better than before.

Zhang Qiao no longer avoided Lin Tianyue when breastfeeding.

And Lin Tianyue, seeing this harmonious mother-and-daughter scene, felt a warm happiness well up from his heart.

This was his woman, his daughter, and someone he needed to protect carefully for life.

A son, a daughter, a wife—life couldn’t get any more perfect!

Zhang Qiao noticed the intense gaze on her head and couldn’t help giving him a sidelong glance: “Lin Tianyue, stop staring.”

Lin Tianyue smiled and sat on the sofa, crossing his legs, watching even more intently.

Xiaxia fell asleep in Zhang Qiao’s arms. Zhang Ling, seeing this, was about to pick her up when Lin Tianyue beat her to it.

He held the child, rubbed Zhang Qiao’s head, and kissed her on the forehead.

Zhang Ling was still standing nearby, her heart tightening, and she quickly withdrew.

She drank a glass of water to calm herself, silently thinking: “I guess I’m just too old. Young people really know how to have fun. This morning they ignored each other, and now they’re being all affectionate—what’s going on?”

These past few days, Zhang Ling had been at the hospital day and night, caring for Zhang Qiao and the baby. She hadn’t been sleeping well, felt a bit irritable, her throat dry and sore, and her temples ached.

She drank some warm water and took two pills to reduce the heat in her body.

Just then, Lin Tianyue came out from inside holding the baby and saw her.

After putting the baby in the stroller, he walked over: “Sister, you must be exhausted these past few days. Now that Qiao Qiao is breastfeeding, things are much easier. Why don’t you go home tonight and get a good night’s sleep? Tomorrow Qiao Qiao can be discharged.”

“No need… I’m fine.”

“The baby will need care for a long time. Your health is more important. Listen to me—I’ll ask Brother Quan to bring you home. There’s a batch of goods arriving at the company today, so you can help him with that too.”

Since Lin Tianyue said this, Zhang Ling could only feel grateful.

“Alright then, brother-in-law. After I wash Xiaxia’s diaper, I’ll go home myself. It’s not far, and I don’t want to trouble anyone.”

Ever since the last time Brother Quan had broken the ice with her, Zhang Ling had been careful to keep her distance from him.

She couldn’t just owe him favors forever.

When Zhang Ling returned to Lin Tianyue’s residence in Jiangcheng, the family had been busy at the hospital these past few days. They only came home occasionally to cook, so the house was in disarray.

With Zhang Qiao being discharged tomorrow, Zhang Ling decided to clean the house.

She changed and washed all the bedding, cleaned the furniture and floors inside and out until everything shone.

After a long day, the house finally looked brand new. Tomorrow, when Qiao Qiao and the baby returned, they could stay comfortably.

Unconsciously, evening arrived. Zhang Ling was about to cook when she discovered the water had been cut off.

Of course, it wouldn’t happen in the morning or at night, only now.

She was still worried about how to cook dinner when someone knocked on the door.

Lin Tianyue’s residence was connected to the company. She had heard some commotion outside earlier in the afternoon—it was probably the goods arriving.

Zhang Ling assumed it was a worker and opened the door, only to be startled by the figure outside.

Brother Quan was carrying a large box and barged in without saying a word.

Zhang Ling had to make way for him at the door. She looked at the box: “What’s this?”

“A color TV!”

A television?

Zhang Ling’s heart leapt. She had heard about this—just plug it in and you could watch movies, martial arts films. How expensive!

By now, Brother Quan had already set the box on the floor and quickly unpacked it, revealing a square, tidy TV inside.

“Come help me a bit,” he called to Zhang Ling, asking her to hold the bottom of the box so he could lift the TV out.

Though she felt awkward, Zhang Ling went over.

She bent down, holding the bottom of the box and the foam, and when Brother Quan lifted the TV, his elbow nearly hit her face. She quickly dodged.

“Why dodge? I’m watching.”

He placed the TV on the flat surface under the bookshelf, then glanced at the timid woman.

Zhang Ling looked at the big device on the table, her eyes full of curiosity.

“What shows do you like? I’ll find them for you later,” Brother Quan said, searching for a power outlet and teasing her.

Zhang Ling turned and left: “I forgot, I still need to fetch water.”

She didn’t want to stay in the same room as Brother Quan, so she quickly grabbed a bucket to get water. She remembered a well nearby in the back street and needed to fill it to avoid running out tonight.

There was only one bucket at home, so she had to carry it by hand.

Since there were many people fetching water, she purposely dawdled, finally carrying a full bucket back.

The bucket was so full that as she walked, it sloshed. She didn’t watch her step and tripped on a stone step, falling to her knees with a scream.

Water spilled over, soaking her pants, shirt, and shoes. The ice-cold water made her shiver. She tried to get up, only to find her ankle in excruciating pain.

At that moment, a large hand grabbed her arm and lifted her up: “Look at you, always so clumsy when doing work.”

It was Brother Quan.

He looked down at her dripping wet body and saw that one foot couldn’t touch the ground. He realized she had twisted her ankle: “Did you sprain your foot?”

Zhang Ling nodded in pain.

He squatted and pressed her ankle with his large hand. Even a gentle press made her cry out in pain.

Brother Quan stood up. By now, Zhang Ling was in tears from the pain, glaring at him resentfully: “Why are you pressing so hard?”

“You sprained it yourself, why blame me?” Brother Quan snorted. “I told you to fetch water? And you ran off as soon as we met. Am I a ghost?”

Zhang Ling: “…”

A gust of wind blew. It was late autumn, and the cold made her shiver.

Brother Quan still held her arm and, seeing her trembling, bent his broad back down: “Get on, I’ll carry you!”

“No…”

She couldn’t even say it, because she realized she couldn’t walk at all.

She bit her lip and clung miserably to his back. The moment she touched him, he swiftly lifted her, and she hurriedly wrapped her arms around his neck.

With one hand carrying the bucket and the other holding her, Brother Quan strode quickly back to the residence.

Her clothes were wet. Zhang Ling, afraid of wetting the bedding, only asked him to place her on a stool.

Brother Quan looked back and paused, slightly surprised.
