Lin Qi and Lin Ran were still very young, so they lived in the two neighboring courtyards. Hearing the heart-wrenching cries coming from their parents’ courtyard, the siblings silently covered their heads with blankets.
Lin Ran: “Did our little sister make mom and dad angry again? Was I like this when I was little?”
Lin Qi and Ji Qianhua shared a courtyard. Right now, they were at that stage of being good brothers, even sharing the same bed.
Curious, Ji Qianhua peeked outside and asked with some concern: “I’ve been staying here for a while, and every now and then I hear crying. Where is that coming from?”
Lin Qi, used to it, muffled his head with the blanket and said: “It must be our little sister making mom and dad angry again. Just get used to it.”
Who would’ve thought such a little baby, not even a year old, could have such an ability—to make her parents so upset every single day?
After a few seconds of silence, Ji Qianhua said, “I think Mo’er isn’t even a year old yet, right?”
Lin Qi: “So what if she’s not a year old? Being mischievous doesn’t care about age.”
Ji Qianhua: …Indeed.
Eventually, Lin Mo fell asleep with tears still hanging on her eyelashes, lying on top of her father’s belly, her little mouth pouting pitifully.
Lin Shangshu gently patted her back and whispered, “Who does this little one take after? Neither of us had this kind of temper.”
Lin Furen yawned sleepily: “Anyway, she doesn’t take after me. I think she’s more like you.”
Lin Shangshu: …How is she like me? I wasn’t like this as a child.
At this point, he had realized: any troublesome trait the little girl had was automatically assumed to be his.
After that night, Lin Mo gradually “learned” to talk.
“Ji Ji Ge, eat!” Lin Mo grabbed a sticky little thing and tried to shove it into Ji Qianhua’s mouth.
Ji Qianhua’s expression twisted in horror. He had just seen the little girl pull this thing out from behind her bottom.
Lin Mo didn’t understand why he was recoiling. This was candy that her brother had specially brought back for her from school. It was a bit sticky, but delicious—fragrant and sweet.
If he hadn’t spent the whole day playing with her, she wouldn’t have been willing to share it. She was only allowed three pieces a day, and this bag was almost finished.
“Eat!” She insisted that he eat it.
Ji Qianhua was shoved to the ground by Lin Mo, who forcefully stuffed the sticky thing into his mouth.
Lin Ran came over and saw this terrifying scene. Eyes wide, she hurried to fetch Lin Furen.
When Lin Furen arrived, Ji Qianhua sat on the ground covered in yellow sticky goo, and Lin Mo wasn’t much better. The two of them sat in a row, shoving that yellow stuff into their mouths!
“What are you two doing? Can you even eat that?”
Ji Qianhua had initially struggled, not wanting to eat it. But after tasting it, he realized he had been mistaken.
He also noticed the small bag hanging behind Lin Mo—it wasn’t what he had imagined.
Lin Furen rushed over and picked them both up, no longer caring about how dirty they were.
Seeing her like this, Ji Qianhua knew she had misunderstood and quickly explained: “Auntie, we’re eating candy. It’s just that the candy melted.”
Candy? What kind of candy is like this?
Lin Mo pulled out another piece, which was even more disgusting.
The candy was already sticky. Now, having been kept close to her body, it had melted with her warmth into an even stickier lump.
“Mom, sister, eat!”
Mother and daughter of the Lin family looked at the sticky candy, their expressions a mixture of amusement and disgust.
They really couldn’t eat it, but seeing Lin Mo’s big innocent eyes, they couldn’t bring themselves to refuse.
Then Lin Furen said: “Mom doesn’t like this candy. Save it for your dad. He likes this kind of thing.”
Lin Shangshu, busy with official matters, suddenly felt a chill down his back.
Lin Mo looked suspiciously at her mother. Mom loved sweet things—cakes of all kinds were her favorite. Dad also liked sweets, but always ate them secretly, probably thinking sweets might ruin his dignity.
In short, the whole family loved sweets. Since Mom said to save it for Dad, then it would be saved.
The misunderstanding was finally resolved, though it had scared Lin Furen quite a bit. One such incident was enough—she couldn’t handle a second.
That night, Lin Shangshu, seeing the yellow lump on the table, fell into deep thought.
“Lin Mo’er! Did you poop on the table?”
Lin Mo, rolling on the bed: ??? When did I poop? I already went today!
Lin Furen, coming over after her bath, laughed while twisting her hair: “What are you thinking? This is candy your daughter saved for you.”
Hearing that it was candy, Lin Shangshu clearly breathed a sigh of relief—not poop on the table!
But in his heart, there was also a touch of warmth—this little rascal was thoughtful enough to save something for him.
Though the appearance was a bit off-putting, it was the thought that counted.
After some mental preparation, Lin Shangshu held his breath, closed his eyes, and popped the candy into his mouth.
Despite the unappealing look, the taste was still good.
Lin Furen laughed heartily. Playing little tricks on her husband every day was fun. How had she never realized before how amusing it could be?
Days went by, and Lin Mo soon reached her first birthday.
The first birthday had to be celebrated in a big way, including the traditional “Zhua Zhou” ceremony. Lin Shangshu and Lin Furen had started preparations early.
Noble families and court officials who had good relations with the Lin family would also come.
“You don’t know how much Lin Huan’s little daughter resembles him. She’s just like him!”
“Really? I can’t quite imagine what he would look like as a little girl. He’s handsome, but would he still work as a girl?”
“Why wouldn’t she? He’s beautiful and androgynous. I can’t compete with him in looks. Anyway, his little daughter looks exactly like him. You wouldn’t imagine how drooly he gets. Last time I played with his daughter, she looked just like him and drooled while smiling at me. You have no idea how satisfying that was.”
“Wow! How come you never told me such a good thing? I definitely want to attend the first birthday celebration this time. I want to see how alike the father and daughter really are.”
