Before heading out, Lin Mo and Bai Xiao even changed into a different set of clothes.
Lin Mo even brought Little Gold along. Ever since they returned from the summer resort, Little Gold had been kept in the courtyard to accompany Madam Lin.
Because Little Gold was so intelligent and human-like, it had already become the family’s protective treasure—its status was possibly even higher than that of the “Black Tortoise.”
“Tell me, do you really need to bring Little Gold with us? What if he scares the consorts? He is a snake, after all.”
Bai Xiao still couldn’t stand Little Gold. Ever since he boosted the snake’s intelligence, it had become annoyingly clever.
The moment they returned home, the snake immediately recognized who held the highest authority in the household, and promptly clung itself tightly to Madam Lin.
For a snake like this, Bai Xiao looked down on it from the bottom of his heart—utterly spineless! Sure, its body was soft, but he still wanted to scold it for being a soft-boned coward.
Lin Mo stroked Little Gold, glanced around, and whispered, “I want him to scout the way for us. Don’t you think his size is perfect for that?”
They were going to the imperial palace. What would they do if they were caught? Even though they had informed people beforehand, there were still so many guards, constantly patrolling.
Hearing this, Bai Xiao spoke speechlessly: “And what does that make me? With me here, why do you still need that thing to scout ahead? Put it back!”
Seriously, she was underestimating his capabilities. With his knowledge that covered the heavens above and the earth below, why would they need a scout? She was clearly looking down on him!
In the end, under Bai Xiao’s strong insistence, Little Gold was left at Peacock Hua’s home.
Peacock Hua was absolutely delighted. Back at the summer resort, he had wanted to meet this snake for ages, but never got the chance.
Seeing it today, the snake was indeed stunning!
Lin Mo and Bai Xiao snuck their way along the base of the city wall and found the dog hole.
Actually, the moment they approached, the guards had already noticed them. But they all pretended they saw nothing.
Lin Mo felt around with her hand, “Xiao Bai, you’re sure this leads somewhere, right?”
Bai Xiao nodded confidently: “Relax. Don’t you trust my abilities? Aside from having a bit more grass, this spot is very safe.”
As he finished speaking, he slipped through the hole. Lin Mo hadn’t even reacted before he was already inside.
Lin Mo: !!! At least give me a warning before you crawl in!
From inside, Bai Xiao urged: “Hurry up! There are so many vegetables!”
Lin Mo stuck her butt up and crawled in—but the pot on her back nearly blocked the hole entirely.
Seeing her stuck, Bai Xiao panicked, pulling her in while scolding: “Couldn’t you just pass the pot in first? Why did you have to carry it on your back? Look, you’re stuck now!”
If someone saw them, it would be utterly embarrassing. They’d come sneakily, only to end up needing help getting unstuck—how humiliating.
Lin Mo kicked her legs outside, desperately trying to squeeze through. Hidden in the shadows, several guards almost rushed out to help.
It truly looked pitiful. Why did this seem so tragic?
After using the strength of nine oxen and two tigers, Lin Mo finally made it through—though the bottom of her pot was dented. Thankfully, it was still usable.
In the shadows, one guard signaled to another with a strange expression: Why did Little Lord Lin come here carrying a pot?
Entering the palace was one thing…
But why carry a pot? And why not use the main gate? Only assassins did something like this.
The guard next to him looked at him speechlessly: Does Little Lord Lin ever need a reason for anything she does?
Honestly, after working this long, he still didn’t understand? Little Lord Lin was famous for being whimsical—reasons were irrelevant.
Forget a pot—if she carried firecrackers today, they still had to pretend they saw nothing, and just quietly report to the Empress later.
Meanwhile, the two culprits had already begun picking vegetables. Lin Mo had fields at home too, but she rarely visited them and usually only went to pick fruit.
“Good heavens! The empress and consorts are amazing—these vegetables look incredible!” Lin Mo’s farming dream surged once again as she stared at the freshly picked greens.
Watching Bai Xiao wash vegetables, Lin Mo excitedly said, “What if we plant vegetables in our courtyard too? It’d be so convenient—if we want to eat, we can just pluck them right there!”
Without looking up, Bai Xiao replied, “You’ve thought of that dozens of times. You’ve tried many times. Yet the only thing you’ve grown is a barren courtyard.”
Indeed. Anyone who saw Lin Mo’s courtyard would shed tears. Nothing grew there—not even flowers—just a few trees.
It looked so awful that Madam Lin had paved the ground with decorative stones so it wouldn’t be utterly miserable.
Lin Mo had ruined it with her repeated wild ideas of “wanting to farm,” yet produced absolutely nothing.
Lin Mo rubbed her nose in embarrassment. Not her fault—everything she touched died. She suspected she had a King of Hell constitution—no plant survived her hands.
But… she just couldn’t give up. Especially while staring at these juicy vegetables, her desire grew stronger.
Looking at Bai Xiao washing vegetables, Lin Mo suddenly had an idea. “How about you grow them? I can’t keep plants alive—maybe you can.”
Surely not both of them were plant-killers. That would be ridiculous.
Bai Xiao: …So you’re just bored and want to find work for me, huh?
“I’m not doing it. We have vegetables to eat and people who farm for us. Why work so hard ourselves? Growing vegetables means fertilizing, catching bugs—I’d rather spend that time playing. I don’t want to farm.”
Who had ever heard of a system growing vegetables? People would laugh.
Lin Mo snorted, looking Bai Xiao up and down. “Are you scared? Scared you’ll kill the plants? Aren’t you supposed to be the almighty know-it-all? What’s a little vegetable farming to a big man?”
Bai Xiao: “What would I be afraid of!? If I kill them, I kill them! Just you wait—we’ll grow a whole patch!”
Lin Mo: Oh yeah! The provocation worked!
When dealing with Xiao Bai, this method always worked. He considered himself the omniscient number one under heaven, so of course he refused to admit defeat.
Whenever Lin Mo wanted to do something she couldn’t do herself, this one sentence would get Bai Xiao to do it. Nine times out of ten it worked—the last time, she had simply tricked him too completely.
