There were several villages at the foot of the mountain, and they had already asked around. Today happened to be market day for those villages.
“Did everyone bring enough money? Bring more copper coins—silver might be hard for people to break.”
Lin Mo patted her bulging pouch. It was filled entirely with copper coins. Heavy—very heavy—but that weight was strangely satisfying.
Peacock Hua waved her hand. “Do you even need to remind us? We’ve been ready. I’ve never gone to an outdoor village market before. Come on, come on—we definitely can’t miss it!”
They were all born and raised in the capital. No matter the day or season, the capital was always bustling. People were always at the market.
The four happily descended the mountain, plucking wild fruits all along the way.
They had considered whether they could sell the fruit, but after thinking about it—everyone who lived at the foot of the mountain could easily pick their own. Wild fruits weren’t anything rare to the villagers. If they wanted some, they’d just go pick them themselves, no need to buy them at the market. So they gave up on that idea.
When they reached the bottom of the mountain, the four of them instantly drew a crowd.
“Good heavens! Where did these little immortals come from? I’ve never seen such pretty children!”
“They must be young masters from noble families out for a trip. Aren’t there several noble estates nearby? Which family’s little young master is this?”
Because of her androgynous face and unique aura, Lin Mo was once again mistaken as a young master.
Under her official robe she was wearing men’s clothing. If she took off the robe, she looked exactly like a delicate young master with rosy lips and white teeth. As for the robe—she had casually grabbed someone on the road and asked them to return it.
But hearing the villagers praise them, she smiled so wide her mouth nearly reached her ears.
“No, no, you’re flattering us too much, Aunties. We’re only moderately good-looking—not little immortals.”
Bai Xiao chimed in cheerfully, “Auntie, you’re good-looking too! With scenery this lovely, of course it raises beautiful people.”
The auntie was so flattered her face wrinkles all turned into smiles.
Peacock Hua, the silly beauty: … You two are adapting real fast, huh.
They praised people all the way and ate all the way. The villagers were simple and kind and kept giving them food for free.
“No, no, how can we just take things for free? We have money.”
Lin Mo patted her pouch again and grabbed out a handful of copper coins.
The villagers didn’t say how much anything was worth—Lin Mo just paid however she felt like.
She darted around the crowd like a little money-scattering deity, yet ended up with snacks hanging all over her body.
In a corner where they couldn’t see, a delicate-looking girl was staring at Lin Mo.
“Qing’er, come to your senses! Those are young masters from rich families. It’s not like we can’t survive on our own—why must you insist on doing something so dangerous?”
The girl’s mother was close to tears as she held her daughter’s arm.
But Qing’er stood frozen, eyes fixed on Lin Mo.
She was the prettiest girl among all the villages. She didn’t want to marry one of the local men. She would rather be a concubine to a wealthy man than marry a poor farmer and live a life of hardship.
But honestly, she was exaggerating. These villages weren’t wealthy, sure, but people could easily fill their stomachs. They could even buy things at the market.
And since the imperial summer resort was on the mountain, there were wealthy estates around. There was always work. After finishing farm work, villagers could earn good money working for those estates.
“Mother, don’t stop me. You don’t want me to marry an ordinary man and waste my life, right? I’ve already picked the best one—that short one should be the youngest, and it looks like the others follow her lead. Her status must be the highest.”
“If I can get her… then my future is set.”
Saying that, she flung off her mother’s hand and walked forward step by determined step. Anyone who didn’t know better would think she was walking toward a bright and shining future.
Bai Xiao, wary of danger, had already scanned the entire area. When he discovered Qing’er’s intentions, he was speechless.
He pulled Lin Mo and the others aside and explained the situation.
Wei Zheng’an touched his face in disbelief. “She’s not aiming for me but for you? What kind of taste is that! Sure, you’re prettier than me, but I’m taller and stronger! This girl’s vision is terrible.”
Lin Mo raised her chin proudly. “That’s the charm I have! So what if you’re taller? I am prettier and more alluring.”
Bai Xiao rolled his eyes. “Stop being smug. What’s your plan? She’s already coming.”
If they returned from one market trip with a random village girl behind them, Lin Shangshu would probably die of anger.
Lin Mo gave a wicked smirk. “Leave it to me.”
They continued eating and enjoying the market, and soon Qing’er approached. Up close, the four looked even more attractive, and her cheeks flushed red.
She focused on Lin Mo and deliberately bumped into her.
Lin Mo noticed her movement and instantly twisted aside with a snakelike shift. Smooth—too smooth. The three watching nearly had their jaws drop.
Qing’er, missing her target, crashed straight into an auntie’s arms.
Auntie: “Girl! Can’t you walk properly? Why are you crashing into people?”
Qing’er didn’t understand why she missed. She had aimed correctly!
After apologizing, she tried again.
And so, everyone witnessed this scene:
Lin Mo glided through the street like a spirit snake, twisting and weaving with supernatural smoothness, effortlessly dodging Qing’er each time.
Qing’er, meanwhile, bounced around like a possessed bumper car—hitting here, smashing there—until she began doubting her entire existence.
The three companions couldn’t close their mouths.
So that’s your “brilliant plan”? If you hadn’t said so, we would’ve thought you were a snake demon in disguise. How can a human twist like that?!
Lin Mo maintained a wickedly charming smile the entire time, convinced it made her more attractive.
Finally, Qing’er, desperate, threw herself forward with her arms wide.
Lin Mo raised an eyebrow, steadied her stance, and used a full-body “Great Shift of the Universe”—and redirected Qing’er straight onto the butcher’s chopping block.
She didn’t know martial arts, but this trick was a perfected skill she had developed from years of grabbing shields whenever her parents came after her. She had simply applied the technique to people instead of objects.
The butcher holding his cleaver: …
Qing’er, now lying on the butcher’s chopping board: …
The three stunned companions: …
The surrounding crowd: …
