Lin Mo didn’t dare utter a single word about the mess she had just caused.
She really felt sorry for the Grand Commandant, but—better a fellow Taoist die than this poor Taoist. There was nothing else she could do!
If the Grand Tutor and his wife had really sent her back, then there was no way she would’ve escaped a beating today.
Just thinking about it made Lin Mo’s backside ache. Every time she was punished, it was always with a rattan cane across her rear. She was convinced that her poor butt was about to grow calluses.
Watching the group leave, both Lin Mo and the system finally let out a sigh of relief.
Hearing the system’s long exhale, Lin Mo asked suspiciously: 【Fine, I’m nervous, but why are you nervous?】
System: 【I was just empathizing with you! Anyway, enough, there’s no gossip left to eat. Let’s get out of here quickly—if you run into another acquaintance, you’ll really be doomed.】
Lin Mo thought the system had a point. Compared to eating gossip, protecting her backside was far more important.
Thankfully, the brothel was noisy enough to drown out their conversation. Otherwise, Lin Mo might have been exposed in front of everyone.
Once outside, Lin Mo started wandering the streets aimlessly.
As she strolled, she suddenly ran into some people.
The Prime Minister’s eldest son was out with a group of friends, planning to go on an outing. But then he suddenly noticed a familiar face passing by.
He narrowed his eyes. Tsk! Why does that person look so much like Little Lord Lin? But that’s clearly a young boy!
“What are you looking at? Do you know that young man who just passed by?”
His friends, seeing his expression, were full of confusion. They had all grown up together—they knew exactly who each other’s friends were. That youth wasn’t anyone they knew.
Still, the boy’s face did look somewhat familiar… though none of them could remember where they had seen it.
Suddenly, the Prime Minister’s eldest son’s eyes widened. “That is Little Lord Lin! She’s disguised as a man!”
Little Lord Lin!
Everyone gasped sharply, all stepping back several paces in unison.
Sins, sins! What a cursed day to go out!
Lin Mo had no idea her mere name carried such weight—that just the sound of it could scare others half to death.
One man immediately wanted to go home. He stammered: “T-then, why don’t we just head back? I feel like today really isn’t a lucky day.”
The others all nodded frantically in agreement. Yes, yes! Today is far too unlucky!
If the five of them ran into Little Lord Lin, wouldn’t that just be asking to have their dirty laundry aired?
Everyone in the capital knew—if you encountered Little Lord Lin, you had better travel in a group. The more people the better!
The Prime Minister’s eldest son snorted in disdain, glaring at his cowardly friends. “We haven’t done anything shameful, so what are you all afraid of? Unless, of course, you have guilty consciences.”
If one’s conduct was upright, why fear meeting Little Lord Lin? She couldn’t just fabricate nonsense out of thin air.
Although his interactions with her had been few, he at least knew her character.
Everyone was well aware that though she loved gossip, she was genuinely a good person.
“Since we’ve bumped into Little Lord Lin today, why not invite her to join us? Otherwise, it’ll look impolite.”
His friends all looked horrified: !!! Big brother, are you serious?!
Others would do anything to avoid her, and here he was rushing to approach her! Did he think life was going too smoothly?
One person instantly declared: “Well, I’m leaving first. Now that Little Lord Lin is here, I definitely have to go. Sure, I’ve never done anything shameful growing up… but when I was little, I wet the bed on my father’s neck! If her system somehow finds that out and spreads it, no way, no way—I’m leaving! You all do as you like!”
He bolted immediately, his retreating figure full of panic.
The others: …
With one defection, a second soon followed. “I can’t either. When I was a mischievous kid, I picked up a sachet outside and thought it was pretty, so I placed it on my father’s desk. He thought my mother made it and happily wore it. Later, when my mother saw it, she assumed he was being unfaithful—flaunting another woman’s sachet! Even now, they still fight over it from time to time. I never dared tell them it was all a misunderstanding…”
Everyone else: … Now that’s impressive! Your parents must be so ‘grateful’ to have a son like you.
Out of five, two were already gone. The remaining two looked just as guilty.
Only the Prime Minister’s eldest son stood there, utterly exasperated.
What on earth did you all do as children? Not one decent memory among you! Look at me! I’ve always been upright and proper—I fear nothing!
But then the last two also said: “We’ll leave too. We’ll catch up another day. Just… be careful, and maybe think hard about your childhood. If Little Lord Lin finds out you did anything out of line, the whole capital will know.”
And then, they scampered off as well, leaving him standing alone.
They had set out joyfully as five, yet halfway there he was left by himself.
The Prime Minister’s eldest son began to think, and the more he thought, the more nervous he became.
I… I shouldn’t have done anything outrageous as a child, right? At least, I don’t remember any. But what if I forgot? Children’s early memories are hazy…
Glancing at Lin Mo happily eating wontons by the roadside, the eldest son finally backed down.
A gentleman does not stand under a dangerous wall. I’d better go home and carefully review whether I ever did anything shameful before dealing with her. This is called caution!
So, five had come, and not a single one remained.
Lin Mo remained blissfully unaware of her “fearsome reputation,” enjoying her wontons with gusto.
The system practically drooled as it watched—though it didn’t even have saliva.
【Tsk! I really want to taste your world’s food. I may not get hungry, but just watching makes me crave it.】
Lin Mo: 【There’s nothing I can do. You don’t even have a body. Just be good and stick to eating gossip—because that’s all you can “eat.”】
System: … Heartless!
After spending the afternoon out and even going to the outskirts to play, Lin Mo returned home filthy, though she had picked some flowers along the way.
And truth be told, the plum blossoms blooming outside really were beautiful. Their winter fragrance was exquisite.
Looking at the dirty mess before him, Minister Lin felt his temples throb.
“You’re a young lady, can’t you pay some attention to cleanliness! And what’s with this men’s clothing? Did you go rolling in the dirt outside?”
Lin Mo grinned sheepishly, lifting the plum blossoms. “I just went to pick flowers, Father. Look—aren’t they pretty?”
Seeing her silly smile, Minister Lin rubbed his forehead and sighed. “Enough, enough. Go give those flowers to your mother, then take a proper bath. Just look at the state of you…”
