After the little fox finished saying everything he wanted to say, Song Buli began answering seriously: “Don’t worry, my brother treats me really well.

My brother gave me a name, cooks delicious food for me every day, buys me toys, and even celebrates my birthday with me.

And also, also—my brother hugs me, and he pats my head!

My brother is really, really good!”

“No, something’s not right. Isn’t he a little too good to you? It’s kind of… unreasonable.

I mean, why would he treat you so well for no reason at all, especially when you’re still in beast form?

I just find it a bit strange. He treats you too well. Those kinds of things are things only normal children get.

And adults usually look down on kids like us. So why would he be so good to you? There could be a conspiracy!”

The little fox was still somewhat suspicious.

During the years the little fox had been wandering, he had met many adults, and all of them had treated him the same way—none of them thought much of kids like them.

The only exception he had ever heard of was that old man, but it turned out he was a sadistic abuser behind the scenes.

Now that he had met Song Buli and Song Yiran, it was hard for him not to let his imagination run wild.

Song Buli didn’t really know how to express his feelings. After all, he was still a little kid without much education.

He used his tiny brain to think for a while, and finally squeezed out a sentence:

“Why can’t we be treated like normal children by others?”

The little fox froze for a moment, then replied without thinking, “Because we’re ‘inferior breeds’!”

After saying that, the little fox felt something was off. “No, no—that’s not right! Something’s wrong.”

“I’ve got it! You’re right. We can be treated like normal children!” The little fox finally realized what was wrong.

Ever since he could remember, people had constantly drilled into him the idea that “‘inferior breeds’ are worth less than others.”

That wasn’t fair at all. They hadn’t done anything wrong, yet they were judged guilty from the moment they were born.

And he himself had also believed that he was guilty.

“Your brother is really a good person!” This time, the little fox sincerely felt that Song Yiran was a good person.

Meanwhile, hiding not far away and hearing himself get handed a “good person card,” Song Yiran felt extremely complicated inside. Seriously—just crouching in a park, and a good-person card falls from the sky.

The little fox envied Song Buli for having such a wonderful brother, and he was truly happy for him.

If only he could meet someone that good too.

“Gurgle, gurgle—” The little fox’s stomach growled again. Embarrassed, he used his tail to cover his flat belly.

When Song Buli saw that the little fox was hungry, he pushed his lunchbox in front of him. “Want to eat together?”

The little fox’s face immediately turned bright red—fortunately, he was a red fox, so no one could really tell.

He wanted to refuse at first, but he was too hungry, and the food smelled too good. In the end, he gave in and stammered his thanks:

“Th-th-thank you!”

And so, one wolf and one fox buried their heads and started eating. Even while eating, they didn’t forget to chat.

“What’s this? It’s so tasty.”

“My brother says it’s fried crispy pork. Let me tell you, everything my brother makes is super delicious!”

“Wow, your brother is amazing! Oh right, didn’t your brother give you a name? What’s your name now?”

“My brother named me ‘Song Buli.’ Sometimes he calls me Lili. How about it? Nice name, right?”

“Nice, really nice!”

“By the way, are you real brothers?”

“Nope! I used to wander around, then one day I was brought to the nursery, and that’s where I met my brother. My brother is super awesome—he’s the director of the nursery!”

“Wow! That’s amazing! Can I go to your nursery too?”

“Of course! If you come, then I’ll be the older brother and you’ll be the younger one. I’ll protect you!”

Watching that scene of brotherly affection from behind, Song Yiran felt his heart get pierced by an arrow.

Ah… friendships between little cubs—so adorable.

It wasn’t until the two cubs finished eating that Song Yiran finally walked over. If his legs hadn’t been about to go numb from squatting there, he could’ve watched a bit longer.

Pretending to meet the little fox for the first time, Song Yiran crouched down and asked gently:

“Hello there, little one. Are you here to play with Lili?”

Being up close with Song Buli’s “very amazing” brother all of a sudden made the little fox extremely nervous—especially since he had suspected him of having ulterior motives earlier.

The little fox immediately felt guilty. “H-h-hello! I-I’m here t-to p-play with S-Song B-Buli—hic—”

That sudden burp made the little fox wish he could crawl into a crack in the ground. He pulled his tail to the front and hugged it tightly with his little paws, while his fluffy ears drooped weakly.

What should he do? He had performed so badly—could he still get into the nursery?

“Pfft—”

Song Yiran couldn’t hold it in anymore. The little fox’s reaction was just too cute. If he teased him any further, the poor thing would probably curl into a ball.

Song Yiran reached out his “evil” hand and ruffled the little fox’s fluffy head. “Little one, I heard you want to come to our nursery?”

Feeling the warmth coming from the hand on his head, the little fox was at a complete loss. This was the first time anyone had ever patted his head.

He answered timidly, “Y-yes… I-I do. C-can I come?”

Song Yiran smiled and said, “Of course you can. Although our nursery isn’t fully developed yet, it definitely will grow better and better.”

“Oh, right—let me introduce myself. My name is Song Yiran. I’m the director of the nursery. I will treat every child seriously, raise you all properly, and teach you knowledge.”

“Our nursery is a big, united, and loving family. You can think of this place as your home—we’re all your family.”

As he spoke, Song Yiran started to feel like he was doing an advertisement pitch. Song Buli was beside him the whole time, constantly backing him up and nodding vigorously.

The little fox looked at Song Yiran, who was smiling at him so gently, and at Song Buli, who kept nodding. Slowly, his eyes reddened. He couldn’t quite explain what this feeling was, but right now, he really wanted to cry.

The little fox secretly used his tail to wipe away the tears at the corner of his eyes, as if doing so meant no one would know he had just cried.

Song Yiran pretended not to notice the little fox’s actions. He quietly took out a lunchbox, opened it, and placed it in front of the wolf and the fox.

“I figured one box probably wouldn’t be enough for you, so have another,” Song Yiran said as he ruffled each of their heads.

Hearing this, the little fox suddenly realized that his earlier conversation with Song Buli must have been overheard.

The little fox instantly shut down again. He buried his head into his fluffy tail, trying to wrap his entire fox-self inside it, so he wouldn’t have to face this cruel reality.

Song Buli, standing nearby, also understood. But he felt this was nothing—after all, he’d gone through something even more embarrassing that very morning.

Song Yiran patiently rescued the little fox from his tail, smoothing his fur bit by bit. “It’s a good thing to be this cautious. After all, not everyone in the world is a good person.”

The little fox still kept his head lowered. With no other choice, Song Yiran went straight to the point.

“From the moment you wanted to join our nursery, you already became one of us. That means we’re family now.”

“I’m your big brother. How could a big brother ever hold things against his little brother?”

“Relax. Let’s eat first—the food’s getting cold.”

At that moment, Song Yiran felt like a bandit leader recruiting people by force.

But it worked. The little fox finally lifted his head, looking at Song Yiran with watery eyes. His already beautiful eyes looked even prettier now.

Song Yiran couldn’t help himself and reached out with his sinful hand—of course, he didn’t forget the other cub either.

After being ruffled in turns for a while, the wolf and the fox finally focused on eating.

Song Yiran also sneaked open another lunchbox and placed it behind himself. Xiao Zhong’er immediately understood and quietly appeared to eat as well.

After settling the meals for all three of them, Song Yiran finally started eating his own food.

The evening breeze brought a hint of coolness. Leaves spun gently in the air as they drifted down. This time, the little fox didn’t feel cold anymore.

After dinner, Song Yiran packed up all the lunchboxes. With one cub tucked under each arm, he headed home.

Pedestrians along the road came in twos and threes, most of them hurrying home for dinner, overlooking the scenery around them.

Song Yiran walked leisurely, enjoying the view along the way.

When they reached the nursery gate, the sunset gilded the signboard with a layer of golden light. The few young saplings in the yard also shimmered brightly.

Hope bloomed in Song Yiran’s heart for the future. Everything would move in a better direction.

Meanwhile, the little fox’s gaze was drawn to the colorful ribbons and balloons in the yard. Song Yiran explained, “Today is Lili’s birthday, so we set these up to celebrate.”

A birthday? That’s nice! The little fox felt a bit envious.

As if seeing through his thoughts, Song Yiran said, “You can have a birthday too. After you finish your bath, I’ll let you choose one.”

After washing the lunchboxes, Song Yiran began bathing the two cubs. He filled the tub with water and placed both of them inside.

After all, they were brothers. Bathing together meant they could play together too—how great was that?

Song Yiran squeezed out a generous amount of body wash into his palm and evenly spread it over both cubs.

Then came the bubble-making stage. With years of scrubbing experience, he worked up dense, even foam all over their bodies.

In no time, the two cubs turned into white, foamy cubs. Song Buli loved eating bubbles—when Song Yiran wasn’t looking, he started munching on them. The little fox followed suit and began eating bubbles too.

Song Yiran was helpless. Fortunately, the body wash was produced by Xiao Zhong’er, so eating it wouldn’t cause any harm. Otherwise, he would’ve had to rush the two cubs to get their stomachs pumped in the middle of the night.

He took out two must-have bath toys: little yellow ducks. The cubs’ attention was instantly captured.

“These are really fun! I’ll teach you how to play,” Song Buli said excitedly, eager to show off his skills as the big brother.

“Okay, teach me,” the little fox replied.

Song Buli seriously bit the little yellow duck, which immediately made a “di-duo di-duo” sound.

“See? That’s how you play,” Song Buli said solemnly.

The little fox said he understood and copied him, biting the little yellow duck.

Soon, the entire bathroom was filled with the “di-duo di-duo” sounds of the ducks.

After they played for a while, Song Yiran asked, “Little one, do you have a name?”

“No,” the little fox answered.

Song Yiran asked, “Then how about I give you one?”

The little fox nodded without hesitation. “Okay!”

Song Yiran thought for a moment. “Then you’ll take my surname. My surname is Song. From now on, your name will be ‘Song Xiuhu.’ Your nickname can be Huhu.”

“Okay!” Song Xiuhu thought the name sounded wonderful.

Many years later, Song Xiuhu would still remember the day he was taken back to the nursery—and the sound of the little yellow ducks.

It was an ordinary day. But on that day, he gained a home, a name, and two family members.
