Xiao Luo was a little angry. She had run all the way through such fierce wind and rain. Even though she had worn a bamboo rain hat, it couldn’t shield the gaps around her head and neck from the storm.
The slanting rain had probably struck the back of her neck, with the water trickling down into her inner clothes.
“I could just endure it.”
Jin Luoluo shrank her neck sheepishly. She had been too embarrassed to mention it.
If only her outer robe had gotten wet, she could simply have taken it off. But it was her inner clothing that was soaked—how could she possibly undress in front of him?
Still, she really was freezing. The damp inner garment clung to her skin, making her shiver even harder.
“Hurry and take off your wet clothes. You’ll catch a cold like this.”
Xiao Luo removed his own outer robe and handed it to her.
“It’s fine. I’m really not that cold.”
Taking off her inner clothes in front of him? No way. She absolutely refused.
Knowing exactly what she was worried about, Xiao Luo spoke with a mixture of gentle persuasion and firm insistence.
“Luoluo, don’t be stubborn. I’ll turn my back—I won’t look. Hurry and change out of those wet clothes. If you catch a cold, it’ll hurt me to see you suffer, do you understand? Be good and change. Otherwise, I’ll have to help you take them off myself.”
The moment she heard him threaten to do it himself, Jin Luoluo hurried behind him without another word.
“Don’t you dare peek!” she warned. “Men are all lechers. I have to be on guard.”
“I’m a gentleman. I wouldn’t stoop to peeping,” he replied teasingly. “Besides, I’ll get to see you eventually. I’m in no hurry.”
His joking words drifted over, making Jin Luoluo flush with embarrassment and annoyance.
Even though he wasn’t looking, simply having a man nearby was enough to make her nervous. Fumbling in a panic, she took off her outer robe, then removed her soaked inner garment. When she realized even her dudou (a traditional undergarment) was wet, she had no choice but to change that as well.
Once she had changed, she no longer felt quite so cold, though chills still ran through her from time to time.
Outside, the wind howled and the rain poured relentlessly. Running back now was impossible. Besides, she couldn’t bear to leave him alone here overnight.
So she resigned herself to staying with him.
Xiao Luo tore down one of the curtains hanging in the hall and beckoned to her.
“Come here.”
Jin Luoluo shuffled over.
“What are you doing?”
Using the curtain, Xiao Luo wrapped her up tightly like a rice dumpling. After admiring his handiwork with satisfaction, he gathered her into his arms.
“Luoluo, you must be exhausted. Go to sleep.”
He gently kissed her tired eyes, his heart aching at the thought of her braving the wind and rain in the middle of the night just to come see him.
