“Luoluo, since everyone is asking, hurry and tell us the couplet so everyone can hear it!” Even the Empress had become curious.
From the look of it, Jin Luoluo remained perfectly calm. Could it be that she truly had some peerless, marvelous couplet? But if it were really such an excellent couplet, surely it would not be simple.
Yet since she claimed it was a simple one, how could nobody answer it? The more the Empress thought about it, the more curious she became.
Jin Luoluo smiled slyly. Her bright, watery eyes sparkled beneath the palace lanterns like crystal-clear starlight. Though her makeup was gaudy and vulgar, the breathtaking charm within those eyes was unmatched by anyone.
She looked at Yang Ruoyao and said, “Listen carefully. This couplet is really simple. The first line is:
‘You are not north-south.’”
Cough cough…
At the lower right side of the hall, Xiao Luo was the first to lose control, immediately raising his folding fan to cover his mouth as he laughed.
This Jin Luoluo truly was incredible at insulting people indirectly — after being insulted, they could not even retaliate.
Beside him, Xiao Yu was first stunned, then instantly spat out his tea, laughing so hard he nearly lost his breath.
Gradually more and more people understood what was going on. Laughter spread through the hall until the entire great hall was overwhelmed by uncontrollable waves of laughter.
“Well? Can you answer it?” Jin Luoluo stared smugly at Yang Ruoyao.
“Jin Luoluo, you’ve gone too far!”
Yang Ruoyao’s face alternated between red and pale with rage. Of course she knew the matching line was:
“Then I am not a thing.”
But saying it aloud would basically mean insulting herself as “not a good thing.” How could she possibly force herself to say it? She could only swallow this humiliating loss in silence.
That damned Jin Luoluo had deliberately created a couplet that simply could not be answered, purely to humiliate her. Now everyone in the hall was laughing at her. Her reputation as a talented beauty had been utterly ruined by Jin Luoluo.
Worst of all, Jin Luoluo had basically called her “not a thing,” yet she had no way to refute it even after suffering such humiliation.
Jin Luoluo pressed forward aggressively.
“Too far? I merely gave you a couplet to answer, and that’s considered too far? Then weren’t all the couplets you used earlier to make things difficult for me even more excessive?”
“I can’t answer it. Happy now?”
Yang Ruoyao’s pretty face was filled with resentment. Forgetting all about maintaining grace and composure, she stormed back to her table and sat down with an angry huff.
“Mhm, of course I’m very satisfied.”
Jin Luoluo swept her gaze across the hall full of people laughing so hard they were practically falling over, then smiled cunningly.
“Don’t laugh. She couldn’t answer it, but could any of you? Whoever managed to answer it, come on and let me hear it.”
