Watching Conley and Elizabeth walk away, Kidd’s face twisted in anger.
“Hey, are you okay?” Atulu asked cautiously.
“Arrgh!” Kidd let out a roar, then slumped down. “What do you think? Elizabeth’s the one in trouble! My god… I bet that slick, polished guy is hitting on her!”
“Conley isn’t that kind of person,” Wang Bo said with a smile.
Kidd despaired, “That’s even worse! If he’s a playboy, Elizabeth will stay away once she’s hurt—but if he’s a good man, she’ll fall in love with him!”
“Alright, alright, kid, have a little faith in your Elizabeth,” Uncle Bing said helplessly.
Though frustrated, Kidd remained clear-headed. “She’s never mine… it’s a one-sided crush. Damn it, I don’t think she ever loved me.”
Juan shrugged. “Could be true.”
Wang Bo glared at him. “Watch it, kid. Looks like your Rosalie isn’t interested in you either. Be careful, Conley might steal her heart too.”
The remark hit Juan hard. He jumped up angrily, “No way! How could he possibly attract Rosalie?”
Wang Bo swiped across his tablet and pulled up a webpage. “Look at this. Conley family—Scottish immigrants, in the medical supply business. One of New Zealand’s largest medical suppliers. I’d say Conley’s net worth is at least a billion.”
Juan sank back down, looking equally dejected. “F***… this is troublesome.”
Sitting in the Qin Dynasty Café, Conley looked around curiously. “This style is great… that Terracotta Warrior is beautiful. I saw them when I went to China.”
“You’ve been to China? That’s my boss’s hometown,” Elizabeth said, sipping her bronze-colored, rustic cup of coffee. “Hmm, tastes good.”
Conley took a sip and smiled. “Yes, yes. I’ve been there several times as a kid. Our family sold some medical equipment there, so I went along with my dad and brother to gain some experience.”
“What was it like?” Elizabeth asked curiously.
“Lots of people, huge places, incredible projects… I loved their culture. Truly profound. Their history is unimaginable! But there were also many problems: no strong faith, expensive healthcare, some low-quality doctors…”
He shook his head and laughed. “I shouldn’t go on, or else I’ll start a monologue and you’ll have to just listen.”
A young Asian man walked by and interrupted politely. “Sorry to butt in. Your understanding of China is quite accurate, but also a bit one-sided. There’s a lot you might not have seen.”
Kidd extended a friendly hand. “Oh, hello! You’re Chinese?”
“Yes, a tourist. Came here to travel,” the young man replied, shaking hands. “I’m Lu Chenggong. Nice to meet you.”
Lu Chenggong soon brought friends over, after asking permission. “Traveling isn’t just sightseeing and tasting food; it’s also about communicating with locals. Can we chat together?”
“Of course. Elizabeth, you don’t mind, right?”
“No, I’m quite curious about China. I’ve been learning Chinese—I might even be able to speak with you in Chinese.”
The next day at work, Conley officially joined and was assigned a desk across from author Hill, who was buried in his keyboard. His bestseller Deadly Notes had sold extremely well, and he was already working on the second book.
Hill liked writing in the police station because his protagonist was a handsome young cop, and the station atmosphere helped inspire him.
Conley sat down. Hill looked up, curious, then his eyes lit up. “Hi, hello.”
“Hello, I’m Conley. Are you Mr. Hill? Haha, my colleagues and I really enjoy your Deadly Notes. That’s what real cops should be like.”
Conley pulled a book out from a moving box. “I even bought one. It wasn’t easy—the first print sold out fast in Wellington and Oakley.”
Hill laughed. “No need to buy anymore. I’ll give you a copy next time.”
Seeing a reflection of his own character in Conley, Hill felt writing would become smoother, as he now had a real-life model.
Atulu decided to help his two brothers secure justice. He patted the table. “Hi, hi, Officer Conley, today you’re going on a patrol of the town.”
Conley stood at attention. “Yes, Officer.”
Hill looked at the Maori giant. “Atulu, I remember the boss asked you to patrol the town.”
“Of course, of course. But it’s not just for Conley. He’s new here and should familiarize himself with the town.”
Conley smiled politely. “Right, that makes sense. Oh, Officer Atulu, I brought some things from Oakley. Let me see where they went…”
He rummaged through the box and pulled out a large gift box. “Some dried seafood. I thought you’d like it, right?”
Atulu opened it to find abalone, sea cucumber, lobster, scallops, and vacuum-packed fish slices. He grinned from ear to ear. “Amazing!”
With nothing to return, he accepted the gift. “How about this—I’ll accompany you around the town. Maybe it’s better if someone goes with you.”
They drove the old M151E2 Jeep.
Turning the steering wheel, Conley laughed. “Awesome! What a cool car.”
Atulu pulled out two items from the seafood gift. “First, let’s go to the community hospital. You can understand the town’s health status from there.”
At the hospital, he handed Conley to Doctor Yi, then went to find Zheng Hongmei. “Master’s wife, I brought a small gift for Master—not much, just a token.”
Zheng Hongmei was flattered. “Is this… okay?”
Atulu explained, “Master works so hard every day. He deserves some nourishment. Actually, this was my little brother’s gift, but I think sea cucumber and abalone are more suitable for Master.”
Zheng Hongmei looked at Conley. “Such a thoughtful young man.”
Conley spoke with Doctor Yi. Rosalie approached. “Doctor, we still haven’t received the antibiotics we need—aminoglycosides, amide alcohols, polypeptides, and tetracyclines are all in shortage. Polypeptides, vancomycin is already gone.”
Doctor Yi sighed. “Official channels are too slow. Let’s report it to the boss, and he’ll figure something out.”
Conley said, “Excuse me, the hospital lacks antibiotics? I can make a call—maybe approval will go faster.”
Doctor Yi looked at him in surprise, then asked tentatively, “Cain Conley… Paul Conley of the Conley Pharmaceutical Group?”
“My older brother,” Conley replied.
Rosalie’s big eyes sparkled with excitement.
