The wedding room games lasted only half an hour. Eva wielded an AK in the game and rampaged across the map, leaving several of the older men looking pale and grim.
“Why stop playing? Where are you all going?” Wang Bo called out cheerfully to the group.
Zhou Haojie, holding his laptop, scurried ahead: “It’s getting late. We need to head to a hotel in county, so we won’t linger here.”
“No worries, wish the bride and groom a lifetime of happiness.”
“It’s fine, we’ve already ‘matched up’—we even got a daughter out of it! No worries about delaying, come on, let’s continue for another three hundred rounds!” Wang Bo waved them on.
The group quickened their pace.
The next morning, after breakfast, Eva finished feeding the little girl and took her out for a trip.
“Where are we going?”
Wang Bo said, “Dale needs to make a feature on our Chinese fishing village. We’re taking her out to explore.”
Father Bo nodded. “Alright. When will you be back?”
“Probably by evening,” Wang Bo thought for a moment.
Hearing this, Mother Bo immediately handed him a thermos: “It might be inconvenient to make milk outside, so take some water with you.”
Wang Bo started Zhong Dabao’s Mercedes and headed to the county town to meet the others, then drove toward Pingnan City, two hundred kilometers away.
Eva sat in the car, coaxing the little girl to sleep. “You all really have too much free time. What’s so interesting about A’s blind date?”
Dale curiously asked, “Sister, what’s a blind date?”
Eva frowned, thinking, and said, “It’s like a kind of social party, but very small. I don’t really understand it either.”
Wang Bo drove and explained to them: “Eva’s right, but not exactly. It’s not a party—it’s about being introduced to a stranger of the opposite sex through an intermediary.”
Eva asked, “Then how can you tell if they want to develop the relationship further?”
Wang Bo shrugged. “Just look at their face.”
“You can tell from expressions? That’s amazing! What if someone’s shy?”
Wang Bo replied, “No, I mean look at your own face. If you’re good-looking, continue. If not… basically goodbye.”
Eva was shocked: “My god, poor A.”
Wang Bo laughed heartily: “If A knew, he’d have no choice but to hit you.”
Upon arriving in Pingnan City, several cars stopped together. Fan Dong poked his head out: “I just thought of something, Xing Ye, how do we find A? We can’t just call him to ask where he is, right?”
“Yeah, I was just thinking the same,” Song Jiashu nodded.
Li Xing rolled his eyes: “Are you guys serious? It’s only ten o’clock. Who goes on a blind date at ten in the morning? Definitely around noon. Let’s go hide at his place.”
“What if he left early?” Fan Dong asked, unwilling to accept it.
Hou Haibo explained: “Master Xing just called. A only recently got up, he can’t have gone anywhere yet.”
Sure enough, at eleven, Qingyang drove out from the underground garage, his Passat moving slowly.
As the group was about to start their cars, Li Xing shook his head: “Do you guys even know how to tail someone? One car is enough. I’ll follow him, and call you when we reach the destination.”
Wang Bo said: “Damn it, call quickly! I’m afraid A will freak out if he sees us and split immediately.”
The call came quickly. Ten minutes later, Li Xing said: “Four Seasons Garden Plaza. Hurry up. This guy ran into a pretty girl, and he’s all excited.”
Qingyang entered a café, and they waited briefly outside. Li Xing went in to check, then came out and waved: “It’s not easy. He took the girl into a private room. I don’t think we can see much.”
“Can we go to the next room and listen in?” Song Jiashu asked.
Li Xing shook his head: “Useless. People speak quietly during blind dates. Plus, this room isn’t an ordinary partitioned room. We’d need to be inside to hear anything.”
“Is there any other way?”
The group looked at each other, frustrated.
Eva, having listened for a while, said: “You want to hear what they’re saying, right?”
“Yes.”
“Then that’s easy. Just use a bug.” Eva said nonchalantly.
“Pfft!” Several men spat in disbelief. “This is China. Teacher, where would we get a bug here?”
Eva snorted, found a gift shop, bought a small embroidered box, borrowed scissors to make an opening, and used colored paper to craft a small flower.
“What’s that for?” Hou Haibo asked. “Xing Ye, you know?”
Li Xing blinked: “I have no idea. Wang Bo, you know?”
“I know nothing.”
Eva inserted the colored paper flower into the opening, making the box look prettier. She opened the box, placed a phone inside, and called Wang Bo’s number on speakerphone.
“OK, this is a bug. You just need to get a waiter to put it in.” Eva said casually.
“Will this really work?” The men were stunned.
Eva placed the box on a nearby trash bin, stepped two paces back, and said: “Is this distance fine?”
Wang Bo’s phone picked up the conversation clearly. The speaker had some static, but it didn’t matter.
After the test, Eva said: “As long as the phone has power and service, you can listen indefinitely.”
“How is it so effective with a box blocking the sound?” Zhao Xiaohui asked curiously.
Eva pointed to the flowers: “These are Chekhlov hornflowers, which amplify sound. It enters the box and comes out louder.”
“Let’s be careful not to let this guy hear us,” someone warned.
Eva shook her head: “Don’t worry. The box itself is soundproof. The hornflowers only allow one-way transmission. Sound can’t travel out the other way. Very safe.”
Li Xing and the others stared at Wang Bo oddly.
Wang Bo shrugged helplessly: “Why are you looking at me? Look at Eva—this isn’t my doing.”
Song Jiashu timidly asked: “Teacher Eva, you really used to work in intelligence?”
Eva nodded: “Yes. But not the kind you imagine, like the KGB. I’m definitely not a ‘Swallow.’ I’m not that omnipotent.”
Zhou Haojie patted Wang Bo on the shoulder: “Wang Bo, from now on, be honest. Don’t ever think about having a young girl on the side. I’m looking out for your life.”
“Shut up. Am I that kind of person?” Wang Bo glared. “Quick, get it in there.”
Hou Haibo said: “Leave this to me. I’ll find a waiter and tell him it’s just a small decoration. Maybe add some little flowers or fairy lights. I’ll make sure he delivers it.”
“Will he agree?”
“I’ll give him a hundred bucks. You think he’d say no?”
Li Jiayi sighed: “It’s a shame you guys aren’t paparazzi.”
