In the afternoon, Wang Bo returned to his office. A knock sounded on the door, and when he looked up, he saw the detestable face of Mayor Robert.
Although they had clashed fiercely before, in truth, ever since his last visit to the ruined Tahiti Town, Wang Bo had already forgiven everything the man had done to him.
Putting himself in the other’s shoes—if another town were rising by stepping on Sunset Town, Wang Bo would have adopted even more radical measures. He might even have paid assassins to eliminate the new town’s mayor.
Sunset Town had relocated the only remaining old buildings of any value from Tahiti Town, and Wang Bo did feel a twinge of guilt over that.
If Robert hadn’t left Tahiti Town midway and had stayed there all along, Wang Bo would have been willing to compensate him.
One million New Zealand dollars wasn’t much. The breeding bulls he sold to Middle Eastern tycoons—some of the especially outstanding ones—went for a million apiece.
But Robert had cowardly left early. He had never regarded Tahiti Town as his own child, only as a money-making tool. Once he realized he couldn’t profit from it, he abandoned it like a rotten mess.
That was what Wang Bo despised most. He too was a mayor, and he understood perfectly well what kind of feelings and attitude one should have toward a town.
It was like mothers—women who truly loved their children would absolutely look down on those who abandoned their kids for their own pleasure.
Robert, however, was frank. He said, “I know you hate me, Mayor Wang, but why? You’re the winner now. You’ve already won—why be so harsh toward me?”
“As you said, Tahiti Town has exited New Zealand’s history. Sunset Town has become a rising star of the nation. You’re like a celebrity—everyone across the country knows you, Wang Bo, Mayor Wang.”
“And me? I’m like a pile of garbage. No one will remember who I am. Don’t you think it’s only right to give me some compensation? You should help me, shouldn’t you?”
Wang Bo spat on the ground. “What kind of hooligan logic is that! Robert, you know my temper—don’t push me. You can walk out on your own right now. If I make a move, you’ll be thrown out!”
Robert said, “You won’t make a move. You wouldn’t beat up an old man. I know you, Mayor Wang.”
Wang Bo thought for a moment and said, “Then you still don’t know me well enough. I generally don’t beat old people—but I love beating old bastards.”
After such repeated mockery and insults, Robert didn’t seem to care at all.
He sniffed and said, “Let’s get straight to the point, Mayor Wang. If you’re willing to compensate me, I’d be happy to help you…”
“I won’t give you a single cent, and I don’t need any help from you,” Wang Bo said impatiently.
He truly couldn’t imagine what Robert could help him with. Ownership of those old buildings in Tahiti Town belonged to the town itself, not to any individual.
Once the two towns merged, they naturally became part of Sunset Town, and Wang Bo had the authority to deal with them.
Robert asked, “Are you really unwilling to take pity on an old man like me?”
Wang Bo laughed. “When you ordered people to persecute Sunset Town, I didn’t see you in need of any pity.”
Robert nodded and said nothing more. He walked over, grabbed the desk with both hands—and smashed his head into it!
The move was completely abrupt. Wang Bo had been wondering what he was coming over for.
Seeing him slam his head into the desk, Wang Bo was genuinely startled. Was this old man insane? Was he trying to kill himself by smashing his head?!
Instinctively, Wang Bo jumped up and shouted, “Hey, are you crazy?!”
Robert hit the desk hard. With just one blow, a horrifying gash opened on his forehead, and blood immediately streamed down half his face.
Ignoring Wang Bo’s reaction, he staggered toward the door after the impact, shouting as he ran, “Ah, help! Mayor Wang has gone mad—help! Mayor Wang is trying to kill me!”
Elizabeth was about to deliver documents to Wang Bo. She ran straight into Robert at the doorway, and the sudden sight of a blood-smeared head scared her into a sharp scream.
Kidd, from the office next door, heard the scream and rushed out, shouting, “Issa, what’s wrong?”
Robert crashed into him and cried out in terror, “Mayor Wang is trying to kill me! Call the police—quick, call the police! Save me!”
Seeing his blood-covered face, Kidd froze. Then Wang Bo came out and asked, “Boss, what’s going on?”
Wang Bo knew exactly what Robert was up to—the old man was trying to play the pity card.
He hadn’t expected him to resort to such despicable tactics. Feeling flustered, he waved his hand and said, “He smashed his own head on my desk. Take him to the hospital—have the doctor bandage him up, then deport him.”
Among all the mayors in New Zealand, only he had such domineering authority. This land was his private property; he could expel whoever he wanted.
But Robert wasn’t so compliant. When he saw Kidd about to move, he bolted downstairs, shouting as he ran, “Help! Help! Mayor Wang is trying to kill me!”
Kidd turned and chased after him, yelling, “Get a few people out here—grab this lunatic!”
Immediately, two people rushed out from nearby offices and, without a word, seized Robert. Kidd tore off a roll of paper towels and wiped the blood from his face.
Robert struggled, but the ones holding him were two young men. Then Atulu and Uncle Bing also came out—far stronger—and easily subdued Robert, making him behave.
When Kidd finished wiping the blood off his face, everyone found it strange. There were bluish-purple bruises on Robert’s forehead, but there was no wound at all.
Uncle Bing picked up a blood-soaked paper towel, sniffed it, and shook his head. “This is animal blood. The smell’s too strong.”
Wang Bo was furious. The old bastard was still playing tricks with him. If he’d truly been willing to injure himself, Wang Bo might have admired him as a real man—but he wasn’t even willing to do that!
“Get him out of here!” Wang Bo said darkly. “Have security keep an eye on him. Don’t let him come back in!”
The commotion outside drew many people out of their offices, including Hani.
Hani recognized Robert and said in surprise, “Mayor Robert, what are you doing here?”
Kidd said in astonishment, “Oh—so this old man isn’t a lunatic, he’s a mayor?”
“The former mayor of Tahiti Town,” Hani explained succinctly.
Robert said, “Inspector, now that you’re here I’m relieved. You must testify for me—Mayor Wang of Sunset Town assaulted an elderly man!”
Hani glanced at him, then at Wang Bo. “Boss, did you really do that?”
Wang Bo sneered. “Do you think I’m that kind of person?”
Hani patted Robert on the shoulder. “No. But if you really want to beat him up, beat him hard. When I was in Tahiti Town, I suffered plenty of bullying from him—this old scoundrel!”
