Gu Hua was still a young girl at heart and cared deeply about her appearance— especially in front of her man.
She tried hard to pull her hand out from under the blanket and push the person on top of her. “You’re heavy, get off!”
Mu Junyan glared at her. “How could you smear that dirty-looking turmeric on your face? That’s ginger, you know. What if it ruins your skin? You made yourself look so awful and still dared to show off.”
Gu Hua’s watery eyes looked at him accusingly. “Then why didn’t you mind just now? You sure had fun kissing me.”
He hadn’t even let her speak a word earlier—just pinned her down and kissed her senseless. And now he was acting disgusted?
Mu Junyan averted his gaze. “The lighting was dim just now. I couldn’t see clearly.”
Gu Hua grew even more annoyed and shoved him away with all her might. Sitting up, she rubbed at her face with her hands—now stained an ugly yellow—but she could still feel it hadn’t been completely wiped off.
Imagining the tabby-cat mess she must look like right now, she was practically fuming.
Mu Junyan looked at her, seeing a flustered and puffed-up kitten, and chuckled lowly. He reached out to ruffle her hair. “You’re not ugly. And even if you were, what’s there to be afraid of? I’ve seen every version of you. Every part of you.”
Gu Hua gritted her teeth, then decisively reached out with her yellow-stained hands and smeared them all over his face.
In an instant, the handsome man now looked like a blotchy orange tabby.
Only then was Gu Hua satisfied, giggling uncontrollably.
Mu Junyan watched her laugh so freely, and he couldn’t help smiling too. He held her head in place. “Stop squirming. Hands back under the covers. I’ll wipe your face.”
The Duke himself tending to her, no less.
Gu Hua tucked her arms back into the blanket happily, her heart glowing as she watched his tall figure step out from behind the bed curtains and around the partition. She heard the sound of water.
Soon, he returned with a towel in hand.
His voice was gentle. “There’s not much hot water in the barracks. It’s a bit cold—bear with it, okay?”
Gu Hua leaned forward. “It’s fine. I’ve been using cold water to wash my face this whole journey. I’m used to it.”
The towel had barely touched her face when Mu Junyan heard her words, and his heart ached terribly.
She must have gone through a lot on the road.
He softened his touch, gently wiping her face bit by bit.
But the girl’s skin was too delicate. Soon, her little gasps of pain could be heard: “Softer, softer… Ow… ow…”
Mu Junyan was both amused and helpless. He couldn’t bear to scold her, so he chuckled and teased, “Such a little crybaby. I’m already being as gentle as I can. Keep whining and I’ll just use my mouth to clean you.”
Gu Hua immediately fell silent.
Finally, her face was wiped clean. Her fair, rosy cheeks were now lightly flushed from the wiping, making her look even more delicate and alluring.
Her little face was still tilted up, lips like cherries, practically offered up on their own.
Mu Junyan couldn’t resist running his thumb over her lips. Desire, long suppressed, flared up again. Without hesitating, he leaned in and captured her lips.
Gu Hua had no strength to resist. He pinned her against the headboard effortlessly, and her mind turned to mush. She could only let out soft, uncontrollable whimpers through her nose.
Mu Junyan felt his brow twitch at the sound. Quickly, he warned in a low voice, “Hold it in. We’re in a military camp.”
And with that, he sealed her lips once more—this time so thoroughly that even those tiny whimpers couldn’t escape.
All Gu Hua could do was choke back the sounds threatening to spill out, holding them tight in her throat.
The damned man actually started kissing down along her ear…
She couldn’t take it anymore!
No, she regretted it—wu wu.
The next day.
Half-asleep, Gu Hua was jolted awake by the sound of drums and horns.
She abruptly opened her eyes, blinking in confusion as she looked around.
It wasn’t until a sliver of light filtered in through the curtain by the window that she remembered where she was.
Oh right, she was in the military camp.
The person beside her was already gone, and the blanket was cold—he must’ve gotten up before dawn.
Her heart skipped a beat.
Crap, it was already broad daylight—how was she supposed to sneak out of the military camp now?
She lay there, racking her brain until her head hurt, and when no good idea came to mind, she simply got up to see if she could do some makeup and sneak out quietly.
But the moment Gu Hua tried to sit up, her waist and back ached so much she had no strength at all.
She couldn’t help cursing inwardly. After nearly two months apart, and with constant battles, how was Mu Junyan still this energetic? Worse, his body seemed even harder than before.
Every part of him was hard as a rock.
Struggling to sit up, she realized her body had been cleaned, and she had been changed into a clean inner robe and undergarments.
Next to the bed was an outer robe.
She put it on but found it way too big. She had to fold up the excess fabric around her waist and tie it with a belt.
Luckily, her waist was slim, so even with all the folding, it didn’t look too strange.
Still, it felt like a child wearing adult clothes.
How could she face anyone like this?
Gu Hua scratched her head—she really had no choice.
She tiptoed to the window, lifted the curtain slightly, and peeked outside. Seeing that the surrounding tents were a fair distance from the main one, she felt a bit more at ease.
She crept to the door, lifted the thick curtain, and poked her head out, hoping to spot Chiyu. If she could find him, maybe he could get the head guard to help her sneak out unnoticed.
But as soon as her head popped out, she locked eyes with Overseer Luo.
He had seen the general exit the tent early in the morning and had been lurking nearby ever since, pacing around for half an hour but not daring to enter the tent.
Gu Hua froze.
He was a familiar face, and he had helped her before, so it felt rude not to greet him.
Awkwardly, she forced a smile. “Good morning, Overseer Luo.”
Overseer Luo had always thought that with eyes that beautiful, the girl’s face must be just as lovely—but he hadn’t expected this level of beauty.
Icy fair skin, flawless features, white teeth, and delicate brows—her expressive eyes shimmered with moisture, making her look breathtaking.
He had never seen a woman this beautiful in his life—she looked like a fairy.
Overseer Luo was stunned, completely dazed for a while, his face flushed deep red.
But… why was she still in the general’s tent at this hour?
Oh, right—she had said she wanted to see the general.
Well, she looked fine now. Didn’t seem like she’d been punished too harshly.
He didn’t know where to look and dared not stare directly at her, but still asked curiously, “Miss, what brings you to the general’s tent so early? The general left for the training grounds before dawn—did you miss him?”
Gu Hua froze again.
Before she could think of a response, he asked with concern, “Miss, how are your injuries from the whipping? I’ve got some medicine here.”
As he spoke, he pulled out the medicine he’d carried with him all night and offered it to her.
Gu Hua didn’t dare accept anything from him. After all, he’d tried to barge into the command tent for her last night.
She needed to avoid suspicion.
She quickly waved her hands. “No, no, it’s okay. I’ve already applied medicine.”
As she spoke, she tried to retreat and pull her head back inside, but Overseer Luo took two quick steps forward and lifted the tent curtain.
Startled, Gu Hua stumbled backward, her legs suddenly going soft like noodles—she nearly fell.
Overseer Luo instinctively reached out to steady her, but Gu Hua quickly pointed at him. “Stop right there!”
He snapped back to his senses, realizing he’d crossed the line. Seeing how pale she looked, he stepped back.
He stood at the doorway and didn’t dare take another step inside. Instead, he stretched out his arm as far as he could, face full of sincerity.
“This is topical medicine I got from the army physician last night. It’s great for bruises and swelling. Please take it—it’ll help you heal faster.”
Gu Hua was having a headache.
The people in this army were just too earnest. She really didn’t know how to refuse politely.
Where on earth had Chiyu gone?
Wasn’t he supposed to be guarding the tent?
Wu wu…
Overseer Luo noticed her glancing outside constantly and guessed she was probably afraid of gossip.
He decided to just go in and leave the medicine for her. “I’ll just put it on the table, you can use it if you want. Please be sure t—ah!”
Before he could finish, his collar was yanked from behind and he was pulled backward.
A tall figure suddenly blocked the space between him and Gu Hua.
Dressed in a dark robe and draped in a black wolf cloak, the man entered like a towering wall, completely cutting off Overseer Luo’s view.
