Xia Yumeng said she was hungry and wanted to eat first. Lin Hao immediately pulled her along and stopped a taxi.
“What are you doing?” Xia Yumeng asked, feeling a little puzzled. There were plenty of restaurants on the commercial street, so there was really no need to take a taxi.
Lin Hao opened the car door. “Get in quickly. We’re going to the hospital!”
Xia Yumeng felt a surge of warmth in her heart. Although she kept saying that she was fine, she still happily got into the car with a smile.
“Driver, take us to the nearest hospital!” Lin Hao said after getting in.
“Sure!”
By the time they came out of the hospital, it was already past two in the afternoon. The two of them were starving.
“I told you I was fine, didn’t I?” Xia Yumeng held Lin Hao’s big hand. Although she was hungry, love was enough to fill her stomach. Seeing how much Lin Hao cared about her made her feel even sweeter.
“Still saying you’re fine?” Lin Hao said unhappily. “The doctor already said that if it had been any worse, your bone could have fractured!”
Although it was only her shoulder, when they had examined her earlier, he had insisted on standing beside the doctor and taking a look. After seeing the injury, his heart ached badly. Her delicate, fair shoulder was already covered in bruises.
The two of them were given some oral and topical medicine before leaving the hospital.
“Come on, let’s go eat!” Xia Yumeng didn’t want to continue talking about it, so she pulled him along.
“Let’s take a taxi. Don’t eat near the hospital. The food there is terrible!” Lin Hao said.
“Okay!”
The two returned to the Dong Dazhi Street commercial district and found a Pizza Hut. Each of them ordered a steak, along with a large pizza, a snack platter, and several other things.
After ordering, Xia Yumeng called Xiao Yuan and told him that the diagnosis had come out and there was nothing serious, so he could relax. She then asked him to come pick them up at the east entrance of the commercial street at five in the evening, saying they would send Lin Hao to the airport together.
This was exactly why people said “big eyes, small stomach.” The two of them had been so hungry that when ordering, everything they saw looked delicious and they wanted it all. But after eating for a while, they realized they simply couldn’t finish so much food.
In the end, they barely managed to finish more than half. Both of them were so full they felt like they could only walk sideways.
Lin Hao wore size 41 shoes. Xia Yumeng bought him a pair of black leather shoes. He had never heard of the brand before, but the price was not cheap at all—a pair of shoes actually cost more than two thousand yuan.
This time, he didn’t fight to pay. After Xia Yumeng swiped her card, she even giggled and said she had saved money. If she had bought him a suit as well, she would have felt the pain.
At exactly five o’clock, the two stood by the roadside on the east side of the commercial street waiting for Xiao Yuan. Before long, a taxi stopped by the roadside, and Xiao Yuan opened the door and stepped out with a smile.
Lin Hao felt a little confused. He already knew Xiao Yuan’s identity—so why would he take a taxi?
Xia Yumeng didn’t show any surprise. She walked over and joked, “Secretary Xiao, did you come this late on purpose because you don’t want to treat us?”
Xiao Yuan shook his head and sighed. “No choice. My salary is too low!” After saying that, he burst out laughing.
Only then did Xia Yumeng formally introduce them. “Xiao Yuan, he’s Secretary of my old man, Comrade Xia. This is Lin Hao, my dad’s future son-in-law!”
Lin Hao smiled and shook Xiao Yuan’s hand. Both of them felt the strength hidden beneath each other’s soft palms.
“Let’s go. What time is your flight?” Xiao Yuan asked.
When Lin Hao had left school that morning, he had only brought some money, his ID card, and his plane ticket. He hadn’t brought anything else. But now, he was carrying several paper bags in his hands, filled with a new suit, shirts, and leather shoes. Earlier, Xia Yumeng had wanted to buy him a suitcase, but he thought it was troublesome and refused.
Originally, he thought Xia Yumeng had asked Xiao Yuan to come because he had a car. But since he had also taken a taxi, why bother troubling him?
“Brother Xiao, Yumeng, I can just take a taxi there myself. Don’t make yourselves go through all this trouble!” Lin Hao said.
Seeing that Xia Yumeng still wanted to say something, he added, “You’re still injured. Don’t go. Let Brother Xiao send you back to the dorm instead!”
After saying that, he reached out and stopped a taxi that had just driven over.
Xia Yumeng could only say helplessly, “Alright, then be careful on the way!”
Lin Hao smiled, then reached out and shook Xiao Yuan’s hand again. “Big Brother Xiao, I’ll leave it to you!”
“Don’t worry. Have a safe trip!” Xiao Yuan nodded.
Watching Lin Hao wave at her from inside the car, Xia Yumeng suddenly felt her nose sting. She was a little reluctant to see him leave, so she shouted, “Bring back a gold medal!”
Lin Hao stuck his head out of the car window and made a victory sign toward her. In the blink of an eye, the taxi had already driven into the stream of traffic.
Xiao Yuan watched Xia Yumeng standing on tiptoe, gazing after the car. Only then did he realize that the little girl in front of him had truly grown up.
In the blink of an eye, time really passed so quickly.
Xia Yumeng lowered her head, looking a little downcast.
Xiao Yuan smiled and asked, “He’s going to a competition?”
“Hm?” Xia Yumeng replied listlessly.
“A math competition?”
Xia Yumeng looked up at him, her face full of surprise. “Does Lin Hao not look like an artist?”
In his impression, people involved in art should have long flowing hair and an unkempt appearance. But Lin Hao actually had short hair. Although he was a little thin, he still looked fairly sturdy.
His appearance was ordinary but pleasant-looking; his face was clean and fair, with large single-lidded eyes and a straight nose. He looked fresh and neat, very much like a proper young man. But no matter how he looked at him, he didn’t seem like someone involved in art.
Seeing him shake his head, Xia Yumeng became annoyed. “He’s going to be a pianist in the future, and he’s also going to be a rock superstar!”
“Rock?” Xiao Yuan shook his head even harder.
That made even less sense. Weren’t rock musicians supposed to wear leather jackets and leather pants covered with shiny chains?
“Forget it, I’m not explaining it to you anymore!”
Xia Yumeng pouted, feeling gloomy. She took the medical examination report from her bag and handed it to him.
“Let’s go. Take me back to school!”
……
When Lin Hao walked out of the airport, it was already past ten at night.
The temperature in Shanghai was several degrees higher than in Xuecheng. Tomorrow was May Day—back in Xuecheng, people still needed jackets, but here short sleeves were enough.
He took out his phone and sent Xia Yumeng a message, telling her he had arrived safely.
Soon, a reply came back:
“Good. Now I can sleep peacefully. Love you!”
Lin Hao stared at the words “Love you” and chuckled.
This was the first time the two of them had said those words to each other, and Xia Yumeng had been the first one to say it.
While waiting in line for a taxi, he secretly smiled bitterly. Hopefully the competition venue had air conditioning, otherwise wearing a suit would be enough to roast him alive!
At half past eleven, he finally arrived near the competition venue. He found a hotel that looked decent and checked in, took a good shower, and quickly climbed into bed.
He hadn’t had a moment to rest all day—he was exhausted.
In this era, when smartphones had not yet become common, Lin Hao already had savings of over a million yuan. He could be considered quite wealthy.
But he still hadn’t developed any extravagant habits.
Although he wasn’t the type to split every penny in half before spending it, he still felt that money that didn’t need to be spent was unnecessary.
For example, when staying at hotels, he thought as long as the place was clean and tidy, that was enough.
Just as he was about to fall asleep, his phone rang.
Lin Hao reluctantly picked it up. It was an unfamiliar number, and judging from the area code, it was from Xuecheng.
“Hello? Who is this?”
“Lin Hao?”
A somewhat frivolous man’s voice came from the other end of the phone.
Lin Hao felt the voice sounded familiar, but for a moment he couldn’t remember who it was.
“Yes, it’s me. May I ask who you are?” he asked.
“The CD from the ferry terminal—that was my doing!”
The person on the phone said.
“It’s you?”
Lin Hao had already recognized who it was. He never would have expected it to be him!
