What kind of monster was this?
From the crack in the earth, it slowly forced its massive body upward.
The light from the torches atop the city wall was swallowed by its colossal form.
The moon disappeared behind it.
The earth groaned beneath its feet.
The Qin soldiers who had just been cheering in victory now seemed to have their throats seized shut.
No sound remained.
Only deathly silence.
The giant wolf, towering over thirty meters high, shook the dirt from its head.
Its eyes burned with crimson flames as they swept across the city wall.
Those were not the eyes of something looking at humans.
They were the eyes of something looking at stones.
Then it moved.
It raised one claw.
That claw, larger than a siege ram and covered in black scales, casually smashed downward toward the corner of Shang Commandery’s wall—
as though swatting away a fly.
BOOOOOOM—!
A deafening explosion rang out.
The sturdy city wall crumbled instantly like a sandcastle.
A massive breach appeared in the fortifications.
The dozens of Qin soldiers stationed there did not even have time to scream.
Together with the shattered stone, they vanished into the darkness below.
“No…”
A young soldier stared at the horrifying breach and dropped the halberd in his hands.
He collapsed to his knees, warmth spreading through his trousers.
“It’s divine punishment…”
“We can’t win…”
Panic spread across the walls like a plague.
“Hold the line!”
Meng Tian’s face was pale as paper, but he still forced himself to draw his sword.
“Archers!!”
He roared with every ounce of strength in his body.
“Loose arrows!!”
“Ballistae! Aim for its eyes!!”
The recovering Qin soldiers began mechanically carrying out orders.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
Arrows poured through the sky like rain.
HUMMMM—!
More than ten heavy ballistae roared as they launched gigantic bolts as thick as a man’s arm.
And yet—
Clang! Clang! Clang!
The arrows striking the giant wolf sounded like handfuls of sand being tossed against metal.
Apart from scattering a few sparks, they accomplished nothing.
Those giant bolts, powerful enough to pierce through city gates—
hit the beast’s scales…
and left only a few faint white scratches.
The giant wolf did not even feel pain.
It merely seemed irritated by the tiny things buzzing around it.
Then it opened its mouth.
“ROOOOAR—!”
A visible shockwave swept outward.
More than half the torches atop the walls were extinguished instantly.
Countless soldiers screamed as blood burst from their eyes, ears, noses, and mouths before collapsing.
It’s over.
Only those two words remained in everyone’s minds.
Right then—
“YOU BEAST!!”
A furious roar exploded across the chaotic battlements.
It was Wang Li.
His face was covered in blood, and his armor was shattered and torn.
Raising the Qin sword in his hand, he charged toward the massive breach like a mad bull.
“Sons of Great Qin!”
“Even in death—we die standing!”
“WITH ME!!”
Behind him, the soldiers who had been terrified out of their wits stared blankly at his resolute back.
Then—
a silent figure stepped to Wang Li’s side.
It was Fusu.
He said nothing.
He simply raised the Qin sword whose bloodstains could never again be cleaned away—
holding it across his chest.
With action alone, he declared his choice.
One soldier.
Then two.
Then more and more.
The soldiers tightened their grips upon their weapons once again and followed behind them.
They intended to block that breach—
with nothing but flesh and blood.
The atmosphere atop the walls transformed from despair…
into a tragic sort of madness.
And yet—
none of it had anything to do with the two figures standing by the battlements.
Ying Ziye tugged on Ying Zheng’s dragon robe.
Ying Zheng lowered his head.
Ying Ziye lifted his greasy little face and pointed the half-chewed lamb bone in his hand toward the giant wolf ravaging the city outside.
His childish voice remained soft and innocent—
yet every word entered Ying Zheng’s ears clearly.
“Father Emperor.”
“This wild dog is tearing down our walls.”
He sounded dissatisfied and gnawed another shred of meat from the bone.
“It doesn’t take you seriously at all.”
Ying Zheng’s movements stopped.
First, he lowered his gaze and looked at his son.
Then he looked up again at the colossal wolf that towered above everything.
Suddenly, he laughed.
“Hah…”
The laugh was low at first.
Then it grew louder and louder.
“HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!”
That wild laughter drowned out the wolf’s roar, drowned out the soldiers’ battle cries.
It echoed across the entire battlefield.
Everyone on the walls stopped moving.
They stared at their emperor in confusion.
Ying Zheng’s laughter ceased.
Only one thing remained on his face.
Rage.
A rage fierce enough to burn the heavens and boil the seas.
“A mere barbaric beast!”
His voice was colder than ten-thousand-year-old ice.
“And you dare call yourself a god before me?”
He suddenly drew the Tai’a Sword from his waist!
“CLANG—!”
The clear ringing of the blade sounded like a dragon’s cry.
“It’s not that it doesn’t put me in its eyes!”
Ying Zheng raised the sword and pointed it at the giant wolf.
“It is that it does not put Great Qin in its eyes!!”
The moment those words fell—
The space behind Ying Zheng twisted.
A mass of black qi appeared out of nowhere.
The black mist condensed, coiled, and stretched.
A patch of pitch-black scales emerged from the void.
A pair of dragon horns, twisted like black steel, pierced through space itself.
A dragon!
A gigantic dragon made entirely of the purest darkness appeared behind Ying Zheng!
It had no physical form—
Yet it felt heavier than mountains.
Its immense body coiled behind Ying Zheng, while its massive dragon head extended above the city wall, looking down upon everything below.
The giant wolf that had been roaring suddenly froze.
For the first time, another emotion appeared in its burning crimson eyes.
Confusion.
Then—
Fear.
A terror born from its bloodline itself, from the deepest depths of its soul.
Below the walls, the vast sea of wolves instantly fell silent.
Every wolf dropped flat onto the ground, trembling violently.
Ying Zheng did not even glance back at the black dragon behind him.
He merely looked at the giant wolf as though staring at an insect.
He raised the Tai’a Sword.
And in a voice that sounded like the decree of heaven itself, he spoke two words:
“Kneel.”
The voice was not loud.
Yet it struck the giant wolf’s soul like an invisible thunderbolt.
“Wuuu…”
The giant wolf let out a mournful whimper.
Its mountain-like body began to tremble violently.
It wanted to resist.
It wanted to roar.
But its legs no longer obeyed it.
Crack!
The sound of bones breaking rang out.
Its forelegs, harder than steel itself, were bending inch by inch.
It was about to kneel.
This so-called “Wolf God” did not even possess the qualification to remain standing before this man.
And just as it was about to collapse—
The black dragon behind Ying Zheng moved.
It did not fly.
Its figure merely blurred for an instant—
And it appeared directly before the giant wolf.
It opened its mouth.
Inside was not flesh and blood—
But a swirling darkness that devoured all things.
With a single bite—
It clamped down viciously onto the wolf’s throat.
“AOOOOOO!!!”
An indescribably miserable scream burst from the giant wolf’s throat.
That was not the cry of flesh being torn apart.
It was the wail of a soul being ripped to shreds.
Where the black dragon bit into it, the wolf’s body began to collapse.
No blood flowed.
Instead, it transformed into countless black-red particles of light that surged wildly into the black dragon’s mouth like a broken floodgate.
The black dragon was devouring it.
Devouring the totem worshipped by the Xiongnu for hundreds of years!
The giant wolf’s enormous body rapidly dissolved before everyone’s eyes.
Meanwhile, the black dragon’s size expanded at terrifying speed.
Its outline became more solid.
More real.
In only a few breaths—
The once-invincible giant wolf completely vanished from heaven and earth.
Leaving behind only a gust of unwilling wind.
The black dragon’s body had already doubled in size.
It raised its head and coiled above Ying Zheng.
Then—
Its golden dragon eyes slowly opened.
It made no sound.
It merely lowered that cold gaze—filled with endless hunger—toward the ground below.
Toward the stunned remnants of the Xiongnu army.
Toward the tens of thousands of trembling wolves sprawled upon the earth.
