The current conditions at home made it impossible to get warmer.
Yu Wei sighed and shook her leg along with her son. “I’ll ask around later and see if there are any heaters for sale these days. If there are, I’ll buy one and see if it helps warm things up a bit.”
Yu Hui didn’t know what a heater was, but it sounded warm. Even though his little feet were covered with cotton socks, they were still a bit cold.
The cold in Lucheng was like a magical attack—chilling air seeped in from the top of your head straight to the bone, leaving no room to breathe. Especially in the South, where there’s no central heating, this damp chill was even more unbearable on rainy days—bone-deep cold.
Even indoors, it was freezing.
By the time Yu Wei carried the bicycle downstairs, her hands had turned bright red from the cold. Yu Hui’s eyes immediately turned red when he saw her.
“Mama, let’s walk instead.” Riding a bike meant facing strong wind—Mama’s hands would freeze.
Seeing her sweet son worry like that, Yu Wei instantly felt like her hands didn’t hurt as much anymore. She quickly reassured him, “It’s okay! Mama’s a grown-up, this is nothing. I’m not cold at all!”
“Mama has to buy gloves.”
“I will. Once I drop you off at kindergarten, I’ll go buy a pair.”
Only then did Yu Hui nod in satisfaction. Once Yu Wei leaned the bike against the wall and sat him on the back seat, the little guy held onto the rear end tightly and looked at her with a bit of sadness as she got on.
“Hold on to me, sweetheart!”
Yu Hui obediently hugged his mama. The moment he rested his head against her back, Yu Wei felt his tiny padded jacket against her skin—it was so warm, it melted her.
That moment of warmth was enough to push her forward against the cold!
But reality hit back quickly. With Yu Hui pressed to her back, he could clearly feel her shivering.
“Mama…” Yu Hui softly called out, but unfortunately, it was drizzling and very windy today. His mosquito-quiet voice was blown away immediately.
“So cold… so cold…” Yu Wei’s teeth were chattering from the wind. Riding a bike in the dead of winter was pure suffering! She should’ve bought gloves yesterday. Now her hands were so numb, she couldn’t feel them anymore.
The two of them were bundled up like bears. Yu Wei’s fear of the cold meant she didn’t care about appearances in winter—as long as it was warm, she’d wear it!
Who cares about looking good—warmth was everything in this freezing season!
The streets were crowded that early morning, especially during the school and work rush. As they passed narrow alleys, her bike would get surrounded, almost like a traffic jam from the future.
A group of kids passed by her, and Yu Wei casually glanced at them. Most of their faces looked dry and red from the wind, some even cracked.
That’s why skincare should start from a young age! Like her own adorable son—his little face stayed soft and fair all year round, always smooth to the touch.
But in this day and age, no one had the luxury to worry about that. As long as you had enough to eat and wear, that was already a blessing.
They rode on for a bit, weaving through the crowd. When they passed Lucheng Central Primary School, Yu Wei couldn’t take it anymore—her hands were completely numb. She stopped right away to rub them and blow warm air on them.
Yu Hui’s heart ached seeing this. His deer-like eyes misted over. “Mama, I’ll give you my scarf—wrap your hands in it.”
The little guy’s voice was soft and sweet. Then he took off the “fishing net” scarf around his neck and handed it to Yu Wei.
She took it—it was still warm from his body. It really was comforting, even though the stitches were a bit clumsy and funny-looking. Yu Hui loved it, though, and insisted on wearing it to school every day.
Yu Wei felt a bit embarrassed. Back then she’d wanted to buy him a prettier one, but he refused and insisted on wearing the one Mama made. He said it was even better-looking than the ones in the department store!
Her nose stung. She was moved by her sweet, thoughtful son.
“But if Mama takes your scarf, won’t you get cold?”
Unexpectedly, Yu Hui shook his head without hesitation. “I won’t! Mama’s in front blocking the wind—I’m not cold at all!”
Besides, he wasn’t as afraid of the cold as Mama. Even if he felt a bit chilly, it was just his feet. Without the scarf, his neck wouldn’t freeze anyway.
Yu Wei’s icy hands slowly warmed up inside the scarf. The earlier pain—like needles stabbing into her skin—began to fade.
Maybe she should just accept her son’s kindness… she was really cold.
“Thank you, baby!”
Yu Hui’s eyes lit up, beaming as he replied, “You’re welcome!”
Just as they were about to leave, Yu Wei caught a glimpse of Song Xia sending her two daughters off to school. Her foot paused on the pedal and she glanced over.
After their fight yesterday, she hadn’t seen Song Xia again. From where she sat on the bike, she saw Song Xia wave at her daughters at the door, then smile faintly and turn to walk home.
“Mama?” Yu Hui was puzzled why Mama wasn’t heading toward kindergarten.
Yu Wei came back to her senses and started pedaling again. “It’s nothing. Let’s go.”
The rest of the ride went smoothly. Once they arrived, Yu Wei carefully parked the bike and lifted her son down. She had barely steadied him when a crisp girl’s voice called out behind them.
“Yu Hui!” Sun Aiying came running up, excited. “I saw you again!”
Yu Wei took off the scarf from her hands. “Aiying, you’re here already.”
“Hello, Auntie Yu Wei!” the little girl nodded and greeted her politely. But then another soft voice chimed in from behind:
“Yu Hui! Yu Hui!”
Everyone turned their heads—turns out it was Yu Hui’s deskmate, little Jiujiu.
She smiled and greeted them. “Hi there!”
Little Jiujiu had been brought to school by her mom today too. The two women had chatted a bit yesterday, so they were somewhat familiar now. After nodding in acknowledgment, the mother led her daughter into the kindergarten.
Yu Wei rubbed her son’s head and helped him put the “fishing net” scarf back around his neck. The little guy flinched from her cold fingers but quickly smiled up at her.
He held up a pink little hand with one finger pointed up. “Mama! Can we have panda rice balls for lunch today?”
Yu Wei chuckled and patted his cheek. “Of course. As long as you like it. Now go on in.”
Before going inside, the little guy looked back at his mama a few more times. His gaze briefly landed on Huo Mingwang, but then he was led into kindergarten by the cheerful Sun Aiying.
Yu Wei tucked a wind-blown strand of hair behind her ear, smiling gently as she watched them disappear inside. Only then did she turn around and get ready to head back to the shop.
She didn’t notice the tall man standing next to a car by the street.
Drizzle floated gently from the sky. It wasn’t heavy enough to need an umbrella, but with the wind, it made her face feel very cold.
Yu Wei rushed to a store to buy a pair of wool gloves. Only then did she feel alive again!
By the time she got back to the shop, the drizzle had turned into steady rain. She hurried in, now damp from the ride. Raindrops clung to her long lashes and slid down her cheeks.
“Brrr—” Yu Wei shook herself and parked the bike in the backyard before rushing into the kitchen to warm her hands by the stove.
So cold!
She really had to start livestreaming seriously now. She only needed fifty more yuan to reach her 10,000-yuan goal. Hopefully the system would reward her again—best case scenario, it’d give her some kind of winter survival gear.
She couldn’t take much more of this freezing weather!
Business was slow that morning. Other than Liu Xuehua from upstairs coming down to buy a pancake cake, no one else came in.
Once she started her livestream, though, the quiet shop instantly buzzed with activity. Viewership shot up by the second, and the comment section exploded:
【Aaaaah—Streamer! We want to see your kid!】
【Streamer streamer! I love you! Time to show your son again!】
【Where’s your son? Why haven’t we seen the little guy?!】
…
Only after watching for a while did Yu Wei realize—it must be because she had shown them a photo of her son last time. No wonder so many people showed up today—they were all here for her sweet baby boy!
“The streamer’s son is at kindergarten, so you won’t see him for now~”
【It’s okay! I can wait—after school! Hand over the baby and I’ll spare your life!】
【Streamer, release your son and we’ll spare you!】
【Come on, for the sake of all the gifts I’ve sent you—let the baby go!】
【Food doesn’t even matter anymore. Ever since I saw a photo of the streamer’s son, I’ve lost my appetite!】
…
Yu Wei: Is it really that exaggerated…?
She seemed to have underestimated just how adorable her son was. Just a blurry photo was enough to drive these silly netizens into threatening her!
Having a son who’s too popular is a kind of trouble too!
“You’re my fans, aren’t you? Just look at me—why do you want to see my son?”
【No—don’t want to look at you! We want the baby! Show us the baby!】
【No baby, no gifts! Hmph!】
【Good plan, I’m not giving any gifts either! Hmph!】
Seeing how the situation was getting increasingly bizarre, Yu Wei began to worry. At this rate, she wouldn’t even be able to earn money!
After thinking about it for a long time, she finally compromised: “Alright, since you all want to see my son so badly, I’ll show him to you after he gets back from school, okay?”
【Then why even bother sending him to kindergarten in the first place!】
【Exactly! He should be working in the livestream room, not going to school!】
【Such an adorable baby should be spoiled by all the big sisters in the stream!】
Yu Wei didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, just as she was about to say something, a loud thunderclap boomed from outside, accompanied by a massive flash of lightning, making her jump.
She grabbed her phone and walked out of the kitchen, only to find when she reached the doorway that heavy rain was pouring down. Wind howled through the open door, making her dizzy.
The street was completely deserted. Though it was only nine in the morning, it felt like late afternoon.
The gloomy sky only made the world feel lonelier. Yu Wei began to wonder: Was her son scared of thunder at kindergarten? Would he be frightened by the lightning? If all the kids in the class were scared, wouldn’t it become chaotic? Could the teacher handle it alone?
Her mind involuntarily conjured up an image of Fang Man standing alone in the classroom, comforting each crying child, her face full of anxiety.
【Streamer! Is it raining where you are?】
【If it’s raining, let the baby come home!】
【That thunder was so loud—show us the rain outside!】
Yu Wei switched her phone camera to rear-facing so everyone could clearly see the downpour outside.
【Wow, it really is pouring! And it’s so dark. Streamer, what time is it there?】
Yu Wei switched the camera back inside the shop and closed the door. The lights inside were bright and warm. “It’s just before 9:30 AM here.”
With such heavy rain, she figured no customers would show up today. So instead of restocking the dessert shelves, she decided to focus on livestreaming.
【Same here! It’s 9:15 now!】
Yu Wei smiled, “Other than seeing my son, what else would you like to watch today? How about I teach you how to make croissants?”
【I just want to see the baby, but you sent him to kindergarten! Unforgivable!】
【Exactly. No interest in anything else without the baby.】
【Well… I kind of want to see you cook.】
【Traitor! Drag them out!】
Yu Wei chuckled. She couldn’t just chat all morning, after all. Might as well make some desserts.
With that in mind, she ignored the mock-outraged comments and went into the kitchen to begin prepping ingredients and started making croissants in a methodical way.
“I promise you all—you’ll see my son tonight! But since it’s raining today, I’m going to stream in both the morning and afternoon. If you’re free, come support your streamer! That way, baby can meet you all sooner!”
【Streamer, if you want gifts, just say it. Don’t threaten us with the baby!】
A small airplane gift was sent into Little Fish Tail’s stream—earnings +50.
【Here, take it! Take the gift! Just show us the baby! I even saved the picture from yesterday—it was too cute! I swear!】
【Me too! I can’t stop thinking about that adorable little thing. Let us see a high-res version, please!】
Yu Wei smiled: “Alright, today we’re making croissants. I’m sure most of you have eaten them before. The method is quite simple—as long as you follow my steps, it shouldn’t be too hard. Try it yourself after the stream!”
There are many ways to make croissants, but Yu Wei’s favorite was the chocolate version. She’d never taught it before, and making it today would give her something to sell as well. If it sold well, it could even become a signature item in her shop.
Croissants are easy to make but have lots of ways to eat. One of Yu Wei’s favorites was slicing the croissant open and stuffing in crispy pan-fried ham or bacon. If you like veggies, add a few lettuce leaves.
Meat, veggies—it’s nutritious and delicious.
Kids generally liked to stuff fruit inside, and those with a sweet tooth could add whipped cream.
Though the recipe was simple, the dough needed time to rise. Since this was a livestream, she shortened the fermentation time a bit. This would slightly affect the final texture, but as a food streamer, taste wasn’t everything—showing the process was more important.
The hardest part of making croissants is the layering. Inside should be honeycomb-like. Generally, 10–20 layers are enough for a tasty texture.
Yu Wei had once tried to challenge herself and made over 40 layers—the final product was incredible. The outer crust was flaky and soft, and the interior structure wasn’t damaged at all.
The thin layers were as delicate as cicada wings, and biting into it gave off a satisfying crisp sound.
The ingredient shop in the livestream marketplace was well stocked—even fruits were available. She added blueberries and sliced strawberries—mouthwatering!
Today’s stream was a huge success. The comment section was filled with: “Love the food you make!”
But every message ended with: “Don’t forget tonight’s stream! Baby!”
【Beautiful and skillful Little Fish Tail—I’ll follow you forever!】
【I’m in love! Drooling!】
【Bye streamer, looking forward to more delicious treats!】
【Hehe, but really looking forward to the baby tonight.】
【slurp That adorable little one, hehe…】
Yu Wei ended the stream in a great mood.
Stream time: 2 hours 5 minutes
Gifts received: 699.08
She was thrilled and quickly checked her total earnings: “10,004!”
Over ten thousand!
So… when’s the reward from the platform coming? Will it still come?
She waited until almost 11 AM, but there was no word from the ChuuMii Live platform inbox. And the rain outside hadn’t let up either.
Yu Wei originally thought she’d just grab a bowl of noodles from the shop across the street, but then remembered the expectant look in her son’s eyes that morning.
She couldn’t bring herself to disappoint him.
So she resigned herself to returning home to make a panda bento for Yu Hui.
The rain and wind were too strong for her to ride a bike while holding an umbrella. She couldn’t keep her balance.
So she walked home. Her pants were soaked through, but she didn’t change—she figured she’d just get wet again going back out.
The panda bento didn’t take long to prepare. She finished quickly and rushed off to the kindergarten. The rain had lessened, but only a little.
By the time she reached the kindergarten gates, it was already 11:30—but just in time.
She wiped the rain off her face and approached the entrance. The security guard, recognizing a mom, opened the gate with practiced ease. She smiled at him and headed straight in to find her son.
At that time, the kids were still waiting hungrily for lunch. When they saw Yu Wei arrive, they knew it was a delivery—and they were more excited than Yu Hui himself, trying to peek at what was inside the lunchbox.
Soon, Yu Hui was surrounded by a crowd of kids eyeing his lunch with longing.
As usual, Yu Hui threw himself into his mom’s arms. But the moment he did, he realized something was different.
Mommy was cold and soaking wet. His little face got damp just from snuggling her. He wiped at the wetness with his hand.
“Careful, don’t hug me yet—I’m all wet,” Yu Wei said, placing the lunchbox on the table and wiping the water off his face. “Time to eat! Today it’s your favorite panda bento.”
“Mommy, don’t bring me lunch on rainy days anymore!” the little one said sadly, seeing her soaked face.
Mommy hated the cold, but still braved the wind and rain just to bring him lunch.
He suddenly wondered if he had been too willful—other kids’ parents didn’t bring them meals at school.
At first, he had thought he was the most beloved child in the world. But now, he felt like he was the most thoughtless kid on earth.
Making food was tiring, and riding a bike in such cold weather was even worse. His heart began to ache.
He watched his mother open the lunchbox lid—it was filled with his favorite panda-shaped rice and his favorite meat.
“Huihui, why are you just standing there? Come eat,” Yu Wei said with a laugh as she pulled her son over. His little hands were warm, and she couldn’t resist giving them a gentle squeeze.
The little guy sat down at his seat and cradled the warm lunchbox in his arms. He couldn’t help but think of how cold his mother’s hands had been when she held his earlier—such a stark contrast to his own warmth.
It felt like, for the first time, he truly understood just how deeply his mother loved him.
He had always known his mom loved him, but never before had he felt it so intensely as he did today.
“Mama,” Yu Hui said as he ate one of the panda’s ears, eyes still on his food. “Mama, from now on, don’t bring me food anymore. The food at kindergarten is yummy too.”
Yu Wei stared in surprise at the back of her son’s round little head. She sighed quietly—this kid really had changed after starting kindergarten. So suddenly understanding.
But it wasn’t kindergarten’s doing—they’d only been attending for two days. In the end, it was just Yu Hui himself who was so considerate it made one’s heart ache.
“It’s alright,” Yu Wei said as she watched him eat happily. A few other kids around were eating their food while occasionally leaning over to sniff the delicious scent of Yu Hui’s lunch.
“How about this—if it’s raining hard, I won’t bring you food, okay? You can eat at school. But when it’s not raining, I’ll still bring you lunch. Sound good?”
Yu Hui turned his head mid-bite to look at her and gave a soft nod. “Okay.”
That meal warmed both their hearts. On a cold, windy afternoon like this, the warmth between mother and son quietly flowed in the small classroom.
After the meal, the rain came down even harder. The two parted ways at the classroom door. A gust of cold wind made Yu Hui’s nose sting, and the thought of his mom having to walk back in the downpour made him feel sad again.
“Mama, be careful on the way back!!” the little guy said seriously, his brows furrowed.
“Alright,” Yu Wei replied, opening her umbrella. “Hurry back inside, it’s really cold out.”
The little guy noticed she hadn’t left yet and stared at her. With a helpless smile, Yu Wei finally turned and walked toward the gate, waving to her son. The boy, wearing a knit hat, lifted his arm and waved back.
By the time Yu Wei finally made it back to the dessert shop, pushing against the wind with her umbrella, not a single part of her was dry. But once she dried off with a towel, her phone buzzed in her pocket.
It was a system message from Jiumi Live:
“Dear user, congratulations! You’ve now earned a total of 10,000 yuan through the Jiumi Live platform. As a reward, you’ve unlocked the Winter Warmth Channel! Tap to enter the Rewards Mall. Thank you for your support! Wishing you a joyful life!”
“Winter Warmth Channel?” Yu Wei’s heart fluttered with excitement. Was it what she thought it was?
With hopeful anticipation, she tapped into the “Rewards Mall” and saw that, in addition to the usual “Baking” category, a new one had appeared: Winter Supplies!
This Jiumi Live was incredible! Yu Wei’s eyes widened in amazement. It was like magic—anything she wished for appeared!
She quickly opened the Winter Supplies section, and at the top of the list was—Little Sun Heater!
Oh my god! Her hands were trembling with excitement. Without blinking, she immediately placed an order for a large “Little Sun” heater. The product description reassured: “Auto-adjusting power. Safe to plug in.”
She hit order, entered her password, and within five seconds, a heater—just like a fan—appeared right in front of her. Her freshly bought “Little Sun”!
Yu Wei was overjoyed. One thought ran through her mind: finally, she and her son wouldn’t have to shiver while eating anymore!
Thanks to Jiumi Live’s thoughtful reward, Yu Wei spent the entire afternoon in a state of excitement. She continued browsing the mall, adding everything she wanted to her cart, planning to check out later when she got home.
She curled up behind the counter, warming herself by the “Little Sun,” happily scrolling through Jiumi Live. It was a perfect afternoon.
Good things really do come one after another. When it came time to pick up her son, the heavy rain had surprisingly lessened. By 4:10 PM, it had gone from a downpour to a light drizzle.
But something odd happened—the sky grew darker. Thick, heavy clouds hung lower and lower, like they were pressing down on her head. Dense and black, they blocked most of the light.
Still, Yu Wei was too excited to think much of it. Seeing the rain had let up, she happily secured the cart behind the shop, put her umbrella in the bike basket, and set off to pick up her son from school.
Aside from the growing amount of rain on her face, the journey was relatively smooth.
By 4:30, she arrived at the kindergarten gate. Many parents were already gathered, and the dark clouds began to stir. Strong winds kicked up suddenly.
Cries of surprise rang out around her. Years of life experience told everyone—this storm was about to get worse.
And sure enough—
“Whooosh—!!”
As Yu Hui stepped out of his classroom, big raindrops began pounding the earth—huge, painful drops that stung when they hit Yu Wei’s face.
She hurriedly opened her umbrella and rushed into the school.
She grabbed her son’s hand, and they hadn’t even reached the bike when the rain intensified.
The scene at the gate turned chaotic—kids with backpacks on their heads, pulled along by anxious parents, bikes speeding away with children, disappearing in an instant.
Yu Wei sneezed, shivering as she handed the umbrella to Yu Hui, planning to ride home as quickly as possible. But just that one handoff made it impossible for her to get on the bike.
The little guy was visibly anxious. He held the umbrella as high as he could to cover his mom, but he was too short—his arms and legs were too small. No matter how high he lifted it, the umbrella couldn’t shield her properly.
Seeing his mom soaking wet, Yu Hui panicked. His big doe eyes filled with mist. “Mama! Take the umbrella!”
He didn’t want it anymore—Mama needed it! She was drenched and would get sick!
He completely forgot that he was the one most likely to catch a cold. He shoved the umbrella at her, trying to get her to take it, but if Yu Wei took it, she wouldn’t have a free hand to ride the bike!
Her clothes were getting wetter by the second, and not only did she not take the umbrella, she was still trying to climb on the bike to bring him home. Yu Hui was so worried he nearly burst into tears. The rain pounded harder, thunder rumbled in the distance—
Boom!
Yu Hui flinched hard, trembling. Even Yu Wei jumped at the sound, quickly straddling the bike, prepared to ride home with her son in the rain.
“Beep beep—!”
A bright yellow light shone toward them. Both mother and son turned at the same time. Yu Hui’s face lit up with joy, suddenly holding the umbrella with new strength. “It’s Uncle Huo’s car!”
“Yu Hui! Yu Hui! I’m here!” A small head popped out of the car window—Sun Aiying. “It’s raining so hard! Come ride home with us in Uncle Huo’s car!”
The moment Yu Hui saw Huo Mingwang, he didn’t even think it was strange anymore. Somehow, he was used to Uncle Huo showing up whenever he and Mama were in trouble.
He peeked his head forward and asked, “Mama?”
Yu Wei had no umbrella. The rain hit her face in tiny cold drops. The car’s headlights were blinding, making it even harder to see.
“Mr. Huo came?” she asked, though she already knew.
Yu Hui nodded. “Mhm! Uncle Huo came!” Uncle Huo really was amazing—he came to save them again!
Just then, the car door slammed shut, and a tall figure appeared in front of Yu Wei. A black umbrella opened over her head, shielding her from the rain.
She wiped her face and finally felt like she could breathe again.
Once her vision cleared, she realized just how close she was to Huo Mingwang. Practically touching.
He held the umbrella single-handedly. It was large, enough to cover two or three people, and he held it steadily over her, blocking the rain completely.
“Mr. Huo…” Yu Wei tried to back away, but she was still on the bike. Off balance, she nearly slipped from the seat.
Huo Mingwang caught her arm just in time. She toppled toward him, her forehead bumping against his chest. It hurt a little—he must’ve had something hard under his shirt.
Finally, she smelled that “sweet and bitter” scent Yu Hui had described.
It was medicine. A faint medicinal smell mixed with his clean, sharp scent—together forming what could only be described as “sweet and bitter.”
Her heart fluttered with a hint of panic. She tried to act calm, straightening up and brushing her wet hair back, looking up at the still-drizzling sky. The wind scrambled her thoughts, and that scent still lingered stubbornly in her nose.
A few seconds later, Huo Mingwang’s cool, magnetic voice came from above:
“Get in the car.”
