Yu Wei’s mind was a storm of emotions, but before she could open her mouth to explain anything more, the young nurse turned on her heel and quickly walked out of the room. When she reached the door, she even thoughtfully closed it behind her.
The room fell into silence.
The patient in the next bed, an elderly man around sixty, hadn’t woken up since Yu Wei regained consciousness, and he remained asleep now.
So at this moment, it was essentially just the three of them — awkwardly staring at one another. The atmosphere was… a bit ridiculous.
Yu Hui snuggled in his mother’s arms, utterly content. He didn’t understand what the nurse had said earlier, and felt no embarrassment at all.
All he knew was that his mother was right here, safe and sound, and that made him so, so happy!
Thankfully, the awkward atmosphere didn’t last long. Huo Mingwang, ever self-aware, was the first to exit the room. He moved fast — long legs and all — and vanished from their sight in the blink of an eye.
Yu Wei retracted her gaze.
The soft little dumpling that was Yu Hui snuggled deeper into her arms. His chubby little hands held her waist tightly, and his tiny nose twitched as he tried to soak in the comforting scent of his mother.
“Mommy, when can you come home?”
Yu Wei thought for a moment. “Hmm… Once the IV drip is done, I can go home.”
“What’s a tree-done-leaf?” He’d only heard of tree leaves. What on earth was tree-done-leaf?
“An IV drip is…” Yu Wei half-lifted him and sat him beside her on the bed. She then raised her hand and pointed to the hanging IV bag above them. “See that? Mommy’s getting medicine from that. Once it’s all in, I can go home.”
“Ohhh~” So that’s what an IV drip was. Once it’s done, Mommy can go home!
He still didn’t really get it, but it made sense… sort of.
“Growl—”
Just then, a loud grumbling sound echoed — someone’s stomach. The sound was unmistakable, and Yu Wei heard it loud and clear. She knew exactly who it was, but she still pretended to ask, “Who was that?”
Yu Hui’s little face flushed red in an instant. Embarrassed, he threw himself into Yu Wei’s arms and whispered in his soft little voice, “Me…”
He said it so quietly, like a bashful little bride, that Yu Wei couldn’t help but laugh.
“Oh my, so our little Huihui is hungry!”
“Mommy, don’t say anything!” Yu Hui quickly reached up and covered her mouth. “I’m not hungry! I had a lot of wontons this morning. I’m not hungry at all!”
As if! He was starving — but he couldn’t say that out loud. Mommy couldn’t leave the hospital yet, and she couldn’t go home to cook for him. So he had to pretend not to be hungry. He didn’t want to trouble her or make her worry.
Yu Wei really did stop talking, but her eyes still sparkled with amusement, making Yu Hui feel even more shy.
While warmth flowed gently between mother and son, Huo Mingwang, who had left earlier, was now returning — carrying a small box and heading up to the second floor of the inpatient ward.
Before he even pushed open the door, he heard the sound of cheerful conversation and laughter from inside.
“…Yes, my son’s very sensible. He likes helping me with chores at home — such a hardworking little boy.”
“I’m so envious,” came the old man’s voice. “Your kid looks like such a sweet, well-behaved child. Not like my grandson — tsk tsk…”
“I’ve been in here for days, and he hasn’t even come to visit me once. Not even once! What kind of grandson is that?”
He sighed heavily. “Having a grandson like that… I honestly don’t even know what to say anymore.”
Yu Wei was just about to say something to comfort him when the sound of leather shoes echoed at the door. They turned to look — Huo Mingwang was back.
Mother and son were both stunned, especially Yu Wei, who stared at him in disbelief.
Why… she thought he’d left!
“Mr. Huo, you…” Didn’t leave?
“Take this.”
“Huh?”
Before she could ask the full question, she saw him toss a small box toward her.
She reached out to catch it and was surprised to feel warmth — not just a little, it was radiating a steady, strong heat into her palm.
The box had a lid. When she opened it — steam rose up — it was a box of hot food!?
“This is…”
But before she could finish her sentence, a voice cut in beside her.
“Girl, your man’s real handsome!”
Yu Wei: ?!
She turned abruptly. “No, Uncle, what are you talking about?!”
The old man sitting on a chair beside her bed gave a knowing smile. “Why are you getting all shy?”
He only complimented her man’s looks — why did she look so flustered? So weird.
“No, the point is — we’re not even a couple!”
Yu Wei nearly choked on her own breath. Thankfully, the old man didn’t stay and keep chatting by her bedside. After seeing “her man” return, he slowly got up and wobbled back to his own bed.
Yu Wei didn’t need a mirror to know what her face looked like.
It had to be as colorful as a paint palette!
She didn’t even dare look back at Huo Mingwang. His expression must be awful, right? Just as embarrassed as she was?
Damn it! Why were people so gossipy these days? Just because two people look good, does that automatically mean they’re a couple?
This was mortifying—!
But Huo Mingwang completely defied her expectations.
He didn’t blush. His eyes didn’t even flicker.
Instead, he bent those long legs and sat down with practiced ease on the wooden chair by Yu Wei’s bed. He crossed his legs against the backrest, calm and composed.
“Eat,” he said coolly.
Only then did Yu Wei snap out of her daze.
Huh? Wait, wait, wait—was this meal… bought for her? What’s going on with Huo Mingwang? This guy… actually seems kind of nice.
“Thank you,” Yu Wei mumbled softly.
She then sat on the hospital bed, exchanging a look with Yu Hui. The little guy didn’t understand the strange expression in his mother’s eyes. Curiously, he pointed at the lunch box and asked, “Mommy, what’s this?”
“This is… lunch that Uncle Huo bought for us,” Yu Wei replied in a low voice.
The lunchbox was neither big nor small. Yu Wei didn’t have a large appetite and usually didn’t eat much at one go. Inside were two meat dishes and two vegetable sides, with a layer of fluffy white rice at the bottom. As soon as she lifted the lid, hot steam wafted up, gently warming her cold face.
The lunchbox was tied shut with a rubber band, and a pair of wooden chopsticks had been secured to the top. Yu Wei removed them and held them in her hand.
Yu Hui sniffed the delicious aroma and stole a glance at Huo Mingwang, who sat silently in the chair nearby.
Their eyes met briefly. The moment Yu Hui caught his cold, piercing gaze, his little heart gave a jolt and he quickly looked back at his mom.
He swallowed nervously and leaned in to whisper, “Mommy, is there one for me?”
“Huh?” That stumped Yu Wei for a second. She carefully looked over the contents of the lunchbox—one pair of chopsticks, one box of food. It really… did seem like there wasn’t a second portion.
So… Ah! Yu Wei suddenly realized!
“Uncle Huo probably thought we wouldn’t finish two boxes, so he only got one for the both of us.”
Yu Wei was touched by her own clever deduction. She opened the lid and placed it under the box as a tray, then picked up a tender piece of braised pork with her chopsticks.
“Here, my sweet boy, let Mommy feed you some meat.”
Yu Hui had been a little disappointed just now, mentally prepared to go hungry. But after hearing that Uncle Huo deliberately only bought one portion, his eyes lit up. He sat obediently in the middle of the bed, opened his little mouth wide, and waited to be fed.
The moment he bit into it, the braised pork practically melted in his mouth—tender, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. The taste lingered, and the hungry little guy was visibly satisfied and blissfully happy.
“Is it good, sweetie?”
“It’s yummy!” Yu Hui nodded earnestly. Yu Wei picked up another piece for him.
“Ah—” she opened her own mouth to signal for him to do the same.
Yu Hui didn’t hesitate. He opened his mouth wide again and chomped down on the large, delicious piece of lean meat. His eyes squinted in enjoyment.
“Mommy, it’s yummy. You eat some too!”
“If you like it, eat more.” Since she was sick and had no appetite, she probably couldn’t finish it by herself anyway. Sharing it with her son would be better than wasting it.
Huo Mingwang really was thoughtful. He’d realized she was a sick patient with a poor appetite and had only bought one lunchbox. Not bad, not bad—how very in line with the frugal spirit of the times!
Yu Wei: Mr. Huo really knows how to manage a household! So frugal!
Huo Mingwang: …I never planned to buy a portion for that little brat in the first place.
“Mommy, have a bite too,” Yu Hui insisted. It wouldn’t do if he was the only one eating—Mommy was the patient here. He couldn’t take all her food.
“It’s okay. Mommy’s sick and doesn’t have an appetite. You eat more and help Mommy finish it. I’ll eat whatever’s left.”
She really wasn’t faking her lack of appetite. Though the dishes looked nice and smelled amazing, her stomach just wasn’t up for it.
The little guy hesitated. He looked at the half-eaten pork, then at his mom’s unusually pale face. His small hand tugged at her sleeve.
“Mommy, I’m full. You eat some.”
Yu Hui understood. He knew being sick felt terrible, and that sick people needed to eat nutritious food.
He’d been seriously ill once, and it was awful. Back then, nobody spoiled him, and Mommy didn’t take care of him either. He’d cried and cried in discomfort until Uncle had taken him to the hospital.
“Hm?” Yu Wei reached out and rubbed his head, snapping him out of those sad memories.
She’d taken off her knit hat and placed it on the pillow. Her long black hair was a little messy, but she smiled gently and smoothed her son’s hair down.
“Eat some rice first. You’ve only had meat so far.”
“Okay then.”
Yu Hui grabbed her arm and opened his mouth, ready to eat a spoonful of rice. But before he could, his little body suddenly lifted off the bed.
Someone had grabbed the collar at the back of his neck and hoisted him up! Huo Mingwang, who had been sitting quietly just a moment ago, was now standing—and had picked up Yu Hui like a kitten!
Both mother and son were startled by the sudden movement. Just seconds ago, they’d been enjoying a warm, loving moment. What on earth was Huo Mingwang doing?
Yu Hui hung in the air, completely bewildered. As soon as he was scooped up, his little arms and legs flailed around, and the next second, his nose was filled with the strong scent of medicine from Huo Mingwang.
With a stern face, Huo Mingwang adjusted his hold. Poor Yu Hui was now awkwardly tucked into his arms—one arm pinned under Huo’s armpit, the other twisted behind his back, both short legs wrapped around the man’s lean waist, and his small body tightly locked in place.
“Uncle Huo…” Yu Hui squirmed uneasily, suddenly realizing he was being carried out of the room.
Yu Wei almost dropped the lunchbox in her hands and shouted anxiously from behind, “Mr. Huo, what are you doing?”
Why on earth was he carrying her son like that? Could it be… he found her son too cute while eating and couldn’t help but want a hug?
No… surely not, right? Once again, Yu Wei was moved by her own vivid imagination.
Huo Mingwang’s face remained cold and expressionless. When he wasn’t speaking, he had a truly intimidating aura. Even just looking at his broad back gave off a chill like a gust of cold wind.
He hadn’t planned to answer Yu Wei at all, but seeing the little guy in his arms on the verge of tears, he finally said stiffly, “Taking your son to eat.”
For some reason, when he said ‘your son’, Yu Wei felt like he was really grinding those words out through his teeth.
“Huh?” Yu Wei quickly called out, trying to stop him. “Wait, Mr. Huo! It’s really not necessary—my son and I can share this meal just fine!”
But Huo Mingwang didn’t give her the chance to say more. He turned on his heel and left, completely ignoring her protests.
“Mr. Huo! It’s fine! Really—!”
BANG—
The door slammed shut behind him. The old man in the next bed burst out laughing.
“Oh-ho! So you’re not a couple?” He slapped his thigh. “Your son looks just like him—I thought you three were a family!”
That scene just now had looked so heartwarming. Who’d have guessed they weren’t related?
Yu Wei was speechless. She turned back, fuming. “Grandpa, I told you already—he’s not my husband! Why won’t you believe me?”
“Really? You two sure look like a married couple to me.” The old man chuckled. “And that guy… the way he looked at you—it wasn’t normal. There was a little love and a little hate in that gaze. Tsk, tsk…”
He was an old man with decades of experience—his instincts were never wrong. That man definitely had feelings for this kid’s mom… hmm.
There was definitely something strange about the atmosphere between those two…
Of course, Yu Wei had no idea what the old man was thinking. She was stuck on one question:
Why did the old man—and that young nurse earlier—both insist that her adorable son looked like Huo Mingwang?
Using her clever brain, she came to the only logical conclusion: it must be because both Huo Mingwang and her son were just so good-looking.
After all… all beautiful faces tend to resemble one another.
Right now, the male lead thinks Yu Hui is someone else’s kid, so he’s not exactly fond of the little cutie. But let’s be real—Yu Hui’s way too lovable. It’s only a matter of time before he wins him over.
Face-slapping moment incoming! 👀
In just a few chapters, the truth about who Yu Hui really is will come out.
