She rasped out his name, her voice hoarse. The man sitting by the wall, lost in thought, snapped out of his daze and turned his icy gaze toward her.
Their eyes met in silence. Neither spoke. It was Yu Wei who finally couldn’t bear the awkward, tense atmosphere. She broke the silence.
“This is… a hospital, right? Why are you here?”
“Did you bring me here?” A thought flashed across her mind. “What happened to me?”
His piercing gaze bore into her pale face. Her lips, once a healthy pink, were now dry and bloodless. “You had a fever,” he said coldly.
Yu Wei froze, slowly moving her head. Sure enough… her head was heavy and foggy. She couldn’t summon even a shred of energy.
But even in this state, she knew exactly who was responsible for putting her here.
“Did you bring me to the hospital?” she asked again, frowning.
He glanced at her, annoyance flickering in his eyes. “Yeah.”
Yu Wei hesitated for a long while before muttering, “Thank you.”
She spoke softly, her voice barely above a whisper. Just as she finished, a memory returned, and she turned to face his cold, unreadable expression. She swallowed nervously.
Huo Mingwang must’ve found her unconscious when he came to pick up the goods this morning. That’s probably why he brought her to the hospital.
So she quickly explained, “The thousand egg cakes you ordered aren’t done yet. If you’re in a rush… I’m afraid there’s nothing I can do—”
The moment she said this, she felt a wave of oppressive darkness radiate from the man beside her. His aura grew heavier, more stifling. It felt like his presence alone could suffocate her.
“You’re lying in a hospital bed and still thinking about cakes?” His voice was colder than before.
Yu Wei felt awkward, and a little confused. “But you said yesterday—”
Huo Mingwang cut her off, his eyes sharp like a beast’s. “If I say something, you just do it.”
“Huh?” What’s wrong with this guy’s brain?
Yu Wei was stunned. She had no idea what he meant by that.
Why did it sound like he was… angry? Upset?
Was he blaming her for listening to him? For staying up all night to fulfill his order?
But… if not for him, would she even be here right now? Would her poor son have had to sleep alone at the store all night?
Wait—her son! Where was Yu Hui?
Panic struck her as she scanned the room. No child in sight. Not even a trace.
Yu Wei’s mind went blank. She forced her exhausted body upright, leaning against the cold white wall behind the bed. The chill jolted her awake.
She asked anxiously, “Mr. Huo, where’s my son?”
Huo Mingwang scoffed silently, clearly annoyed by her anxious tone. But under her worried gaze, he still answered: “I didn’t bring him.”
“Then… does he know I’m here? He must’ve been terrified.” After all, she collapsed so suddenly—what child wouldn’t be scared? And she vaguely remembered breaking the noodle shop lady’s bowl too…
She asked again, “Did he cry?”
Huo Mingwang frowned deeply. “I don’t know.”
Yu Wei’s face turned paler. “No, no, this won’t do. How can he be left alone at the shop?”
She looked around again, then glanced at the IV bag above her. “Is this saline? When will it finish?”
“No idea,” he said coldly.
No idea? Then…
“Then…” Yu Wei looked like she was about to cry. She pleaded earnestly, “Mr. Huo, my son is all alone in the store. He’s definitely crying. Could you please help me bring him here?”
He stared at her for a long time. Just moments ago she’d spoken to him with complaint, but the moment it was about her son, her whole tone changed. He snorted. “No.”
Yu Wei froze. To be honest, she had mentally prepared for many possible replies during the silence before his answer. But this? This casual, heartless “no”? She hadn’t expected that.
The atmosphere turned unbearably awkward. Their gazes met and didn’t shift. And in his eyes—cold as ever—she thought she saw a glimmer of pride.
She was left speechless. She stared into his deep eyes, and even though he said nothing else, it felt like they were saying: Beg me.
“Mr. Huo…” Forget it. Yu Wei clutched the bedsheet under her tightly and muttered, “Sorry, I was out of line.”
She called out loudly for the nurse. Fortunately, the nurse was just outside and came in quickly. Her gaze lingered on Huo Mingwang before finally turning to Yu Wei.
“What’s wrong?”
“Hello, I’d like to know how much longer this IV will take. I want to go home.”
The young nurse frowned. “Still early. Not even done with one bottle. You’ve got three more.”
“Huh? That many?”
“Of course. You’re quite sick, so naturally you need more medication.”
“Can I go home first and come back to finish it later?” Just thinking of her son crying made her heart twist in pain.
“You can’t just pause IV drips like that,” the nurse said, clearly speechless.
But Yu Wei didn’t care. Her sensitive, insecure son had been left alone after watching her collapse—how could he not be scared out of his mind?
Her tone was filled with urgency: “Comrade, my son is home alone right now. I suddenly fainted—he’s definitely crying. I just want to bring him here and then finish the drip. Is that really not allowed?”
It’s not like she was skipping the treatment—just delaying it a little…
Unexpectedly, the nurse frowned even more and looked at Huo Mingwang, who sat there like none of this concerned him. “Isn’t your husband right here? Can’t he go bring the child?”
“Ah?” Yu Wei flailed awkwardly. “No, he’s not my husband. That’s why I wanted to—”
Halfway through her sentence, she realized she was getting nowhere. She reached for the IV needle, intending to pull it out herself.
But Huo Mingwang shot out a long arm and firmly grabbed her.
His skin was cold, but his grip was searing, like it might scorch her skin. She frowned and yanked her hand free, hiding it under the blanket.
She didn’t look at him, but he suddenly spoke. His gaze irritated, he said, “Don’t move.”
The nurse stared between them, utterly bewildered, then suddenly had an epiphany. She chuckled and said, “Ah, couples might fight, but you still have to take care of your kid!”
This young nurse couldn’t be more than twenty, yet she sounded like a nosy old aunt.
Seeing them both go quiet, her suspicion was confirmed. She added, “Women get emotional sometimes, but you’re the man here—how can you stay mad at your wife? Go get your son already. Look how worried she is.”
Yu Wei gave the nurse a speechless look. She then heard Huo Mingwang scoff and suddenly stand. His tall shadow loomed over her.
His voice was cold as always, but no longer so heavy. “Watch her. Don’t let her move.”
Then, without another word, he turned and strode out of the room under both their gazes.
The nurse watched his tall figure leave, then looked back at Yu Wei’s dazed face and covered her mouth, laughing.
“You two are something else! He looked like he was dying with worry when he brought you in, and now he’s trying to act all cold and aloof. How funny!”
Yu Wei took a deep breath and hurriedly tried to explain. “No, you’ve misunderstood. He really isn’t my husband.”
And with the way they interacted—cold, distant—what kind of couple acted like that? Even arguing couples weren’t this awkward!
But the nurse wasn’t interested in arguing. She changed the IV and left, saying before she exited, “Don’t move around. Your husband’s probably gone to get your kid. Don’t stress. Just call me if you need anything.”
She walked away, proud of having helped “reconcile” a bickering couple.
As if Yu Wei’s “he’s not my husband” would convince her. They had a kid together—what other man would carry her into a hospital in a panic?
What a joke!
Left alone, Yu Wei stared at the ceiling for a long time, her mind slowly becoming clearer.
She prayed her poor son hadn’t been too frightened. Her precious, sensitive boy—why did he always get dragged into these emotionally scarring situations?
At Yu’s Sweets Shop, several little kids had come to play with Yu Hui, but when they entered, they couldn’t find his mother. It was just Yu Hui, all alone in the shop. Strange.
Upon getting closer, they saw the poor boy sitting behind the counter, quietly crying.
After a flurry of questions, they finally understood the situation.
Zou Gaigai tried to comfort him like a big brother. “Huihui, don’t cry. Since the landlord uncle took your mom to the hospital, she’ll be fine!”
“Yeah, if you cry, your mom will be sad when she gets back,” Ding Xiaohua added gently.
That helped a little. Yu Hui sniffled and finally spoke, voice hoarse.
“But… but I want to see my mom.” He wiped his tears and looked up at Zou Gaigai like a savior. “Brother Gaigai, can you take me to the hospital to find Mommy?”
“Hospital?” Zou Gaigai looked shocked. “That’s super far! Walking there would take forever!”
“But I still want to go…” As long as he could see Mommy, he didn’t care how far it was.
Just thinking of the way she collapsed made him cry again.
Ding Xiaohua, proud and wise for her age, seemed to understand his fears. After a pause, she reassured him, “Don’t worry, Huihui. Doctors at hospitals are really amazing. Your mom will be okay.”
“Yeah! They’re the best!” echoed Chen Zhiman. “When I was sick, the doctor fixed me up super fast!”
Ding Xiaohua then looked at Guoguo and handed Yu Hui two one-yuan notes. “I brought money today. Here, take it.”
Yu Hui was confused. Why was Sister Hua giving him money? He rubbed his eyes and shook his head.
But she just smiled and forced the money into his hand. “I want to buy a mousse cake.”
Zou Gaigai immediately caught on and shouted, rummaging in his pocket for some crumpled coins: “Huihui, I’ve got money too! I’ll buy an egg cake! This way you’ll have money to treat your mom!”
Yu Hui and the others finally understood. Moved, Chen Zhiman and Meng Guotao also searched their pockets and each bought some egg cakes, handing all their money to Yu Hui.
“Here! Now you have money to help your mom get better!” Guoguo said brightly, munching on a cake Yu Hui had brought from the kitchen.
Yu Wei had made so many egg cakes lately they couldn’t finish them.
Touched by their sincerity, Yu Hui dashed into the kitchen and brought out another round for everyone.
“Thank you! Now my mom can get treated!” He wiped his tears again, clenching that handful of money tightly, determination shining in his eyes.
When Mommy came back, he’d give her all the money he “earned” to pay for her treatment!
So, when Huo Mingwang drove straight from the hospital to the dessert shop… what he saw was this scene.
