“I’m so happy!”
Yu Wei was overjoyed. All of a sudden, she scooped up a confused little Yu Hui and, as if that wasn’t enough, lifted the boy over her head and pretended to make him fly.
“Xiao Huihui, Mommy has money now!” Yu Wei’s eyes squinted from her wide smile, and under the warm golden sunlight, her glowing expression sparkled with joy. Yu Hui had never seen her like this before.
He was a little scared—being lifted so high off the ground—but at the same time, a sense of novelty began to spread through his chest. This “being lifted high up” action made his tiny heart beat fast.
He looked at the curve that formed on Yu Wei’s cheeks when she smiled. That radiant smile was so infectious that he couldn’t help but smile along with her, waving his pale little hands in the air.
“Son, you’re too cute!” It was Yu Wei’s first time seeing Yu Hui smile. Compared to his usual numb and expressionless face, he finally looked like a proper little kid.
After she set him down, Yu Wei started panting.
He might feel light when carried, but lifting him overhead was still exhausting. If she were a man, she could probably toss him into the air for a full spin.
Her father used to toss her like that when she was little—it had been so much fun.
“Mama.”
“Mm?” Yu Wei widened her eyes and squatted down to look at him. “What is it?”
Heaven knows how soft and sweet this little boy’s voice was—it could melt a heart into a puddle.
“High.”
Yu Hui suddenly blurted the word. Yu Wei froze for a moment before realizing what he meant. She scratched his neck, making him squint and shrink back with a giggle, his small hands still clutching at her clothes.
“What? You like being tossed up high?”
The smile on the little guy’s face never faded. He nodded, soft and happy.
Yu Wei rubbed his fluffy head. Right now, she was thinking about how to budget the four yuan she had.
First, she’d need to spend one yuan on lunch. She didn’t plan to return home this afternoon. She wanted to continue her livestream, and then go look for a place suitable for the two of them to live. Once she had enough money saved, they’d move out immediately!
Yu Wei wandered the streets with her son in tow. Around noon, the streets were still somewhat bustling. At the end of her line of sight, she spotted a noodle and wonton shop with a few scattered customers inside.
She took the little guy with her and walked in. Right in front of the entrance was a large white board with crookedly written menu items.
They found a spot near the corner to sit. The owner walked out from the kitchen and asked, “What would you like to eat?”
Yu Wei glanced at the little guy who kept staring at her, then looked at the menu. “One small wonton soup, the smallest portion you have. And one bowl of sparerib noodles—uh, make it the two liang size.”
She added, “Oh, and add chili to the noodles, but keep the wontons mild.”
“Alright, I’ll bring it out once it’s ready. That’ll be one yuan and eight fen total.”
The prices were so cheap that Yu Wei’s eyes lit up. With careful spending, one yuan could feed the two of them well for several days!
Another new experience was added to Yu Hui’s growing list—going to a noodle shop with Mommy to eat noodles!
What a colorful day, Yu Hui thought.
The sparerib noodles were quite filling. Yu Wei was stuffed by the time she finished—even though it was only two liang, it felt like too much for her small appetite.
The wontons for Yu Hui were also generous in portion. Since it was his first time tasting something so delicious, he happily scooped them with a spoon while swinging his short legs on the stool. But the little guy had a tiny stomach, so in the end, three or four wontons were left.
He really couldn’t eat another bite. Yu Wei had been planning to just leave, but then she remembered—it was the 1970s now. Wasting food could get you harshly judged.
Forget it, she’d just help Xiao Huihui finish them off.
That afternoon, Yu Wei continued wandering with Yu Hui. Her phone was still at 100% battery. Even after turning off the livestream, she noticed she’d gained another dozen followers. She was thrilled and immediately clicked “+” to register a new account under the name “Gourmet Blogger Takes You to the 1980s.”
Yu Hui was very curious about the phone Yu Wei always held, but she wouldn’t let him see it. Every time, she’d hold it up high where he couldn’t see the screen. All he could hear was her constant murmuring.
Yu Wei needed both hands—one to hold the phone, the other to type on it. So Yu Hui obediently clung to her hem or pant leg and followed her closely, never drifting even a step away.
“Hello everyone! I’m your favorite food blogger, Little Fish Tail!” Yu Wei beamed as she found a quiet alleyway to start her livestream.
Though she had been livestreaming for two years, this was her first time going live on the street. It made her quite shy. She kept glancing around to make sure no one was passing by, even though it made her look less professional.
From a food blogger to a “whatever-I-am-now” blogger, Yu Wei felt overwhelmed.
But whatever the content, she needed money first. Pride could wait. Compared to survival, everything else was secondary.
Thanks to the foundation she built in the morning, the afternoon stream went even more smoothly. Fish Head probably had to work and didn’t show up, but Fish Ball did—though quiet, they still gifted her ten yuan, making Yu Wei so touched she mentally chanted: Bless you, kind soul!
【Is the streamer taking us on a tour of an ’80s street this time? Hahaha】
【Can’t wait, hurry up streamer, I want to see if there are any flaws】
【Camping here! Sneaking a watch during work—don’t let me down!】
【+1! Hurry up, I want to see how authentic the set design is】
【Doesn’t matter! The streamer’s so gorgeous, even if it’s fake, I accept it hahaha】
【Shameless, you!】
Just from reading the comments, Yu Wei could tell most of the audience was here for entertainment. Maybe a few actually believed her and were now watching closely.
The virtual gifts started rolling in—flowers filled the screen, with the occasional white feather floating through. It looked quite pretty.
With money flowing in, Yu Wei felt fired up. She pointed the camera at herself and smiled brightly, while the little guy followed behind, curiously scanning the surroundings.
While introducing the roadside buildings to the audience, Yu Wei also used the chance to familiarize herself with the area. She hadn’t even made it down one full street when a comment appeared that got her heart racing.
【Wait, wait, slow down! I grew up in Lucheng. I think I just saw my old house. This place looks so familiar!】
【Yeah, tilt the phone to the left!】
【No no, your right, my left!】
【OMG, it really is my house! Aaaaah—my house was torn down twenty years ago. Why does it still look like the old version in your video?! This is insane—are we seeing ghosts—?!】
