The little guy tried to give her a meatball with his chopsticks, but the round ball kept slipping off multiple times. In the end, Mingxia had to pick it up herself to stop the comedy.
“It’s okay, I can do it myself.”
Yu Hui gave a sweet smile. “Alright then.”
Lately, Yu Hui had been learning to use chopsticks to pick up food. As a beginner, he wasn’t very skilled yet. For round meatballs that required some technique, he still needed a spoon to help.
With nothing much to do after dinner, Huo Mingwang took the whole family to watch a movie. There weren’t many shows available at that hour, but luckily there was an animated film—Yu Hui’s favorite—so that’s where they went.
Since it was a last-minute decision, they had to buy tickets on the spot.
Being a weekend, it was crowded. Huo Mingwang stood in line for a full half hour before he finally got the tickets.
Meanwhile, Yu Wei sat with her son and Mingxia by a small flowerbed outside the cinema to wait. No one said much—just listened to Yu Hui chatter away with strange and nonsensical comments only children could come up with.
“I didn’t get enough of the last movie!”
“That’s why you should thank Aunt Mingxia. We’re here today because of her.”
“Thank you, Aunt Mingxia!” Yu Hui chirped sweetly, but then suddenly paused and turned to Yu Wei with confusion. “Mom, didn’t you say I should just call her ‘Aunt’? Why are you calling her ‘Aunt Mingxia’ now?”
Her name was Mingxia, and she was his aunt, but Mom called her ‘Aunt Mingxia’… So which was it? Aunt Mingxia? Mingxia-jiejie (older sister Mingxia)? Or Aunt-sister?
What exactly was he supposed to call her?
“Silly boy, Mingxia is your aunt. You don’t call her ‘Aunt-sister.’ You should say ‘Aunt Mingxia’ or just ‘Aunt.’”
Yu Hui only half-understood, looking like he got it… but also like he didn’t. Yu Wei gave up trying to explain further and figured she’d tell him everything clearly tonight—along with the truth that Huo Mingwang was his father.
Mingxia overheard the mother and son’s conversation, and a faint smile unconsciously touched her lips.
In truth, Yu Wei’s gentle nature had always attracted her. It was Yu Wei’s personality that had earned her sincere affection in the past.
Though things happened later on, she couldn’t deny that the old Yu Wei had once given her enough love. That’s why, when Yu Wei changed, her own reaction was so extreme… She simply couldn’t accept the change. Couldn’t accept that someone she once trusted had become a stranger.
She didn’t want to admit that this person was someone she had once accepted. Didn’t want to admit she was her sister-in-law, the one her brother loved…
“I got the tickets! Let’s go.”
While Mingxia was lost in thought, Huo Mingwang squeezed through the crowd, waving the tickets in his hand to signal them to follow.
Yu Hui was the first to respond. He bounced out of Yu Wei’s arms and rushed toward Huo Mingwang.
The man caught him with quick reflexes and scooped him up into his arms, planting a kiss on him. “Good boy, let’s go watch a movie with Daddy.”
Yu Hui wrapped his arms around his neck and pouted, “Even if you took me and Mommy to a movie, you’re still not allowed to take advantage of me!”
And by taking advantage, he didn’t mean the kiss—he meant calling him “son” and claiming to be his father. In Yu Hui’s mind, that was the real offense!
Huo Mingwang chuckled and kissed his chubby cheek again but didn’t argue. He just turned to Yu Wei with a pitiful expression that seemed to say: Why haven’t you told him the truth yet? I’m so aggrieved!
But… Yu Wei’s mind was clearly elsewhere right now.
When he turned around, he saw that this woman had slung an arm around Mingxia’s shoulder and was walking her toward them.
“Don’t be so nervous. I’ve already forgotten everything from before. Back then, my emotions weren’t great and I made some mistakes… I know I hurt you, but I won’t do that again. All of that is in the past.”
“Mingxia, please forgive me. Give me another chance, okay?”
Mingxia had been planning to shake off the hand on her shoulder, but those soft, remorseful, pleading words made it impossible for her kind heart to hold on to any blame.
All that resentment, that bitterness and anger—it felt like it floated away, carried off gently by Yu Wei’s voice.
There wasn’t really anything she couldn’t forgive. She couldn’t lie to her own heart.
This version of Yu Wei—the kind, gentle one—this was the sister-in-law she had once accepted, the one who had reached her heart. Not the version who had changed so much.
“…Mm.”
After a long pause, Mingxia finally nodded. She didn’t brush off Yu Wei’s hand, and the two walked into the theater like close sisters.
This time, the movie really was enjoyable—especially for Yu Wei.
Even if she hadn’t completely resolved Mingxia’s inner conflict, she’d definitely resolved most of it.
Yu Wei sat next to Huo Mingwang, while Mingxia and Yu Hui were on the side watching with great interest. Seeing their profiles, so similar, Yu Wei couldn’t help but sigh:
“These two really do look alike.”
Huo Mingwang smiled and squeezed her hand. “Of course. We’re all family, after all.”
Yu Wei just smiled in return. In her heart, she felt like everything was finally moving in the right direction.
Later that evening, even on the ride home, Yu Hui was still excited about the movie. He sat in the car chatting away with Mingxia, talking about all sorts of wild and disjointed ideas. But she patiently responded to every one of his remarks.
Yu Hui’s fondness for Aunt Mingxia soared. They didn’t stop talking all the way to the courtyard, even after arriving home.
“Alright, Mingxia Auntie is tired. She has to go home and rest. Say goodbye now.”
“Huh? Already? But I haven’t finished talking!” He hadn’t even gotten to the last scene of the movie!
“Yes, come on—say goodbye to your aunt.”
Yu Hui looked down, a little disheartened. But he quickly recovered and cheerfully said, “Aunt Mingxia, you have to come play with me tomorrow too! I still have so much to tell you!”
Mingxia was about to agree, but Huo Mingwang interrupted from the side, “Tomorrow you have kindergarten.”
It was like a thunderbolt struck Yu Hui’s head—he was stunned, totally wrecked.
Looking at his son’s expression of utter existential crisis, Yu Wei chuckled, kissed his cheek, and picked him up for a comforting cuddle. “Come on, say goodbye to Aunt Mingxia—and invite her over for dinner tomorrow, okay?”
Yu Hui immediately perked up. “Okay! Aunt Mingxia, come eat dinner at my house tomorrow! We’ll continue talking about the movie!”
Mingxia nodded cooperatively. “Mm. I’ll come see you tomorrow.”
She gave a shy smile after saying that, glanced at Yu Wei, and then followed Huo Mingwang into the car. Soon, the car drove away.
Perhaps because the day had gone so pleasantly, from that point on, whenever he was free, Huo Mingwang would bring Mingxia over to visit.
The happiest people about this—besides Yu Hui—were naturally Yu Wei and Mingxia.
Mingxia had always been the biggest knot in Yu Wei’s heart. Now that it was resolved, she felt like a weight had been lifted.
And another thing—Yu Hui might be little, but he was a treasure!
Especially when it came to softening Mingxia’s mood—his contribution was vital.
Now, whenever they all sat together, Mingxia’s mood was noticeably better. She could look Yu Wei in the eye, even chat calmly with her.
Even though she didn’t say much, at least she no longer avoided her. That, in itself, was a kind of resolution.
As for Yu Hui—well, his little charmer vibes were irresistible. Whenever Mingxia came over, he would latch onto her for conversation. Despite their ten-year age gap, the two had a surprising number of shared interests.
After dinner, Yu Wei bathed her son and then took out the hairdryer to dry his hair. While doing that, she opened her livestream room.
【Ahhhh—our baby is here! The streamer’s here!】
【You’ve gotten lazy! You used to stream every day—now it’s only once a week! I’m outraged!】
【You disappeared after your last video. So unethical!】
【We’ve waited so long—finally, the streamer is back…】
With her son right there, Yu Wei didn’t talk. She focused on blow-drying his hair. Her phone sat on the opposite table, and Yu Hui didn’t notice it, just letting her big hand rub around on his little head.
“Mom, my hair’s short—it’ll dry super fast!”
Yu Wei had just set down the hairdryer—it had only been two minutes since he finished washing his hair. One had to admit, boys really did have it easy when it came to drying their hair.
【Oh my god! The way our little cutie looks when his mommy rubs his head is too adorable!】【What’s the name of this little darling? He’s melting my heart!】
【Streamer, tell us already! What’s your son’s name?】
Seeing the flood of comments, Yu Wei suddenly called out, “Little Yu Hui.”
“Mama?” Yu Hui looked up curiously. Not knowing why his mom suddenly called his name, he tilted his small head up. “Did you call me, Mama?”
“Yes.” Yu Wei smiled at him.
“What for?” Before he could finish speaking, Little Bai squeezed himself between them with a wiggle of his butt. Yu Hui bent down, picked him up, and began playing with him in his arms.
“Our Hui Hui is just so cute—Mama just likes calling your name.”
Her words made the little guy giggle uncontrollably. He waved his hand at Yu Wei, motioning for her to lower her head.
The moment she leaned down, a pair of tiny hands wrapped around her neck, and he planted a wet kiss on her cheek.
The comments section exploded again.
【Ahhhhh—Let go of her, little guy! Come smooch me!】
【Don’t kiss your mom, sweetie, kiss me! Look over here—pretty big sister!】
【So the little cutie’s name is Yu Hui—what a great name!】
【Hui Hui baby! Look over here! Blow a kiss to your big sisters, pretty please!】
Yu Wei honestly couldn’t understand why these women got so excited through a mere screen. Other than blaming it on her incredibly charming son, she had no explanation.
But she didn’t mind at all—in fact, she could say Yu Hui was like a lucky cat who brought in wealth.
In less than an hour, she had casually chatted while holding her son, and already earned 2,000 yuan. Converted to 1980s currency, that was 200 yuan—enough that she wouldn’t have to worry about money even if the shop stayed closed this week.
And with a big boss like Huo Mingwang by her side, Yu Wei’s freeloading instincts were starting to bubble up again.
After the stream ended, Yu Wei noticed her total earnings had already exceeded 20,000 yuan. She clicked on “My Page” and opened her personal center. Sure enough…
There was a new internal message in her inbox. Excited, she opened it. As expected, the message read:
“Dear user, congratulations! Our system has detected that you’ve earned a cumulative 20,000 yuan on the Jiumi live-streaming platform. As a reward, you get one random wish fulfilled. Click the blue ‘Reply’ below to enter and submit your wish. Thank you for your support! Wishing you a happy life!”
Beneath the blue text was a fine-print note: “Note: If the system is unable to fulfill the wish, the message will be rejected. After rejection, please re-enter a new wish.”
Staring at the message, Yu Wei’s mind went completely blank.
“A wish… any wish… randomly granted?” she muttered. “Wait, it says if it can’t be granted, it’ll just bounce back…”
“Oh my god… is Jiumi Live some kind of magic platform?! Like, Aladdin’s Livestream?!”
“Mama, what are you muttering about again?”
Yu Hui had returned from the bathroom after washing his hands, and overheard her mumbling. Although he was used to it, he was still immensely curious—Mama never told him why she did this.
With trembling hands, Yu Wei began typing out wishes on the keyboard—one after another, only to delete each in the end.
“No, 10 million might be too much… does the system even have that kind of money?”
“But then again, it did say impossible wishes would just get bounced. So maybe it’s okay…”
“But… if I really got 10 million, how would I even spend it? Wouldn’t I officially be a freeloading bum? Just imagining it feels… amazing.”
“Well, maybe I should just ask for 100 million instead…”
“No—1 billion, or… 10 billion… ugh, I’m being way too greedy.”
“Mama, what does greedy mean?”
Yu Wei had been completely lost in her fantasy world. If not for Yu Hui’s question, she might’ve kept rambling to herself.
“Hmm? Greedy means…” She turned to look. Yu Hui had already burrowed into the covers, with his little arms sticking out and his bright, dewdrop-like eyes blinking at her.
Her heart nearly melted from the cuteness.
Knock knock—
There was a knock on the door. Yu Wei put down her phone and went to answer.
“Hui Hui, stay in bed. Mama’s just going to see who it is.”
“Okay!”
She already had a good idea of who it was. At this hour, who else could it be?
Sure enough, she called out from inside, “Who is it?”
“It’s me.”
Hearing the familiar voice, Yu Wei happily opened the door. In the dim light, their eyes met.
He instinctively glanced around, then stepped inside. Noticing the living room was empty, he gave the wooden door behind him a swift kick, closing it with a bang.
Then, everything went dark—Yu Wei’s head was suddenly held in place by a large, warm hand, and an overwhelming kiss descended on her.
Her red lips were captured, and his kisses trailed wantonly across her face.
“Alright, it’s late. Time for bed.”
In the brief pause between kisses, Yu Wei pushed him away. But only a few seconds later, her lips were captured again.
“Mmm… stop it, I want to go to bed.”
“Yu Wei… want to sleep at my place?”
Yu Wei gave him a good punch. “Who wants to sleep with you?!”
“Not with me. I meant—sleep at my place…”
She rolled her eyes at him. Their foreheads were still touching, and his hot breath tickled her cheeks with each inhale and exhale.
“Yeah right! You only have one bedroom—how do you expect that to work?”
“We’ll sleep in my bed…”
Yu Wei was completely done with this man. He was becoming more and more shameless with every word. She suddenly remembered the ungranted wish on her phone. Even though part of her wanted to keep cuddling, she still pushed him away.
“Stop messing around. Go home and sleep. See you tomorrow.” She rose on her tiptoes and gave him a kiss—only for him to immediately pull her into a deeper one, pressing down on her head.
When it ended, he buried his face in the crook of her neck and took in a deep breath of her warmth and softness before finally opening the door and leaving, eyes slightly red.
Before he left, he shot her a fierce glare. “Heartless!”
Yu Wei laughed, locked the door, and returned to the room.
“Mama, was that Uncle Huo? What were you two doing? It took forever…”
Yu Wei climbed into bed and gently pinched her son’s soft little cheeks, still thinking about the man’s passionate, unrestrained kisses.
“Nothing. Go to sleep now.”
Yu Hui sighed deeply like a little adult. “Okay… but I’m not sleepy at all. Mama, can you tell me a story?”
“Go grab a storybook yourself. Mama still has something to do.”
Yu Hui pouted and burrowed into her arms, hugging her waist with his little hands and rubbing his head against her. He clearly didn’t want to go fetch the book—he was being lazy, not wanting to move from bed.
Yu Wei chuckled, gently patting his back while reopening her phone to type in her wish.
Actually, the wish she wanted most right now wasn’t about money, but the truth.
Back then… the original host’s personality had undergone two drastic changes after going to the countryside, just like her current situation. If she wasn’t wrong, the body had been taken over by another soul—a transmigrator. But then, why did the original come back later? That was the big question.
What she cared most about was: the version of Yu Wei Huo Mingwang had fallen in love with—who was that, really? And now that she had taken over this body, would someone else transmigrate into it in the future? Would something unexpected happen?
She had fully accepted life in the 1980s now. She wanted to live happily with Yu Hui and Huo Mingwang. If she were suddenly forced to return to the 22nd century… how could she possibly bear it?
So even though her hands were trembling, Yu Wei still typed out the words.
Whether or not it would work—she wanted to try.
She clicked on the blue “Reply” link and began typing:
“My wish is: I want to know everything—everything—that happened six years ago between the original host and Huo Mingwang after she went to the countryside. Also, I want to know if this body of mine will ever be taken over by someone else again. Will I transmigrate back to the 22nd century?”
Once the screen displayed in big red letters, “Message sent. Please await response,” Yu Wei felt her whole body heating up, trembling all over.
Time ticked by. Nervously, Yu Wei continued waiting. When she looked down, the little guy was still wide awake, playing with a stuffed panda.
She didn’t even have the energy to coax him to sleep anymore. She just silently prayed—
Please work. Please come true…
Ding! Your wish has been granted. Click internal message to view.
Her heart seemed to stop beating for a second.
In just five minutes, her emotions had gone through a full rollercoaster—and now, she was at the very top, waiting to either fall… or fly.
The message looked no different from a regular system message—except for one thing: the sheer length. The contents had increased tenfold, packed densely with the “entanglements” between the original host and Huo Mingwang.
…
Six years ago—or to be precise, seven years ago—when Yu Wei first arrived in the countryside, just like Ge Zheng had said, she was a girl with an extremely volatile personality. Selfish. Always stirring up trouble. A thoroughly unpleasant educated youth.
Nobody liked her in the countryside, except a few birds of a feather.
Half a year later, she was still the same awful person… until the day she fell into the river.
When she woke up again, she had already been taken over by a transmigrator.
As for the original Yu Wei—the real one—she had died in the river.
