DLRC – Chapter 103 I Came Here Just to Beat Him Up

Daily Life of Raising Cubs in the 1980s 17 min read 103 of 118 24

She didn’t just vent all her anger toward that scumbag man and that cheap woman on Zhang Jianguo; she also poured out all the unhappiness she’d been holding in lately.

Yu Wei went all out beating up the scumbag, every strike full of force.

She slammed blows on his dog head, his face, his shoulders, his back…

Perhaps because Huo Mingwang was standing behind her, she knew that man wouldn’t let her suffer a loss, so she dared to let loose and hit him hard.

“Ah! What are you doing! How can you hit someone like this!”

Li Juan finally reacted and hurried forward to push Yu Wei away, but this woman was too fierce. With her delicate little frame, she couldn’t even get close.

If she tried to force her way in, she’d end up getting hit by mistake, so she kept hovering around the edges, too afraid to help.

“Stop hitting him! Don’t hit him anymore!” Li Juan shouted nonstop, trying to make Yu Wei stop, but of course, it was in vain.

“Stop hitting him?” Yu Wei sneered, her hands not only refusing to stop but swinging even harder. “Big Sis, are you kidding me? I came here today just to beat him up!”

“Zhang Jianguo, right? You bastard! Cheating on your wife, and you even had a son with your mistress! Looks like your energy is pretty strong, huh? At your age, do you really think that son is yours?”

Of course, Yu Wei had no idea if the son was really his. She was just trying to scare him with her words. If he really believed it and ended up fighting with the mistress because of it—wouldn’t that be wonderful?

The child’s cries coming from the room must be from the mistress and Zhang Jianguo’s son. Hearing the commotion outside, the child opened the door and walked out clutching a stuffed toy.

“Mommy! Daddy!”

Seeing his dad getting beaten, the boy started wailing, but just like his mother, he didn’t dare come close. He just stood at the doorway crying while watching Yu Wei beat Zhang Jianguo.

Yu Wei’s eyes were already red with rage, and she didn’t even notice the child at first. When she heard him call out “Mommy, Daddy,” she paused for a few seconds.

Zhang Jianguo finally had a moment to breathe. He was drenched in sweat from Yu Wei’s beating, and now being hit in front of Li Juan and his son—it made him feel utterly humiliated as a man. He gritted his teeth, ready to fight back, but then he saw the tall man behind Yu Wei glaring at him with a cold, sinister look. That gaze made a chill run down his spine.

Yu Wei took a breath and continued hitting him with her bag. Zhang Jianguo retreated, raising his arms to block her violent blows.

“Who the hell are you?!” Zhang Jianguo shouted, only daring to dodge without fighting back.

Yu Wei thought he was scared by her aura, not realizing she was borrowing Huo Mingwang’s intimidation like a fox assuming the tiger’s might. She cursed him even more viciously.

“You think you’re worthy to know who I am?!” Yu Wei snarled, then kicked him hard in the lower abdomen, finally feeling satisfied.

This scene made Huo Mingwang frown deeply, and Li Juan let out a heart-wrenching scream as she rushed over, the thin strap of her dress slipping off her shoulder in her panic.

When she saw Zhang Jianguo’s face turning purple and him bent over clutching his groin, she anxiously looked around for a weapon to save him.

Finally, she spotted a long rolling pin on the table, grabbed it, and swung it toward Yu Wei.

Huo Mingwang’s eyes turned sharp as he stepped forward, but before he could act, Song Xia suddenly lunged forward like a madwoman, shoving Li Juan so hard that she stumbled and landed on the cold floor with a thud.

Li Juan wasn’t stunned for long. She quickly got up, but just as she stood steady, she was met with two powerful slaps from Song Xia—so strong they were even harder than Yu Wei’s hits.

The air froze instantly. Song Xia’s slaps carried tremendous force. After all, she was used to doing housework and sometimes heavy labor in the factory. How could a mistress like Li Juan withstand that?

Her fair face instantly turned bright red, each cheek with a deep, symmetrical handprint. It would probably take days before she could show her face in public again.

But then again, this woman was kept like a pampered canary at home by Zhang Jianguo, never needing to toil like Song Xia, who had to leave early and come home late for work.

What a joke.

“Song Xia! You’re insane!” Zhang Jianguo rushed over to check on Li Juan, holding her tightly and showering her with comfort.

Li Juan, playing her role to perfection, collapsed weakly and started crying pitifully. Their son ran over too, hugging her and crying along.

“Jianguo… Jianguo… my face hurts so much… it hurts…”

“It doesn’t hurt, it doesn’t hurt. I’ll take you to the hospital in a bit.” Zhang Jianguo coaxed her gently, his voice softer than Song Xia had ever heard before.

Song Xia stared at the two of them, her eyes instantly turning red, tears falling uncontrollably to the dirty floor.

What fell with those tears wasn’t just liquid—it was the last shred of longing she had for Zhang Jianguo.

All of it dropped to the ground, trampled underfoot.

“We’ve been married for over ten years, Zhang Jianguo.” Song Xia’s tears flowed silently, and the sight of her stubborn back made Yu Wei’s heart ache.

Yu Wei stepped forward and gently held her thin shoulders, only to realize how much weight Song Xia had lost recently…

“Zhang Jianguo, I don’t recall you ever comforting me like this when I cried.”

Forget comforting—if he didn’t frown and call her pretentious, that would already be good enough.

Song Xia roughly wiped her tears. “But then again, I rarely cried in front of you.”

Through every hardship, every time she was exhausted to the point of breaking, she endured it alone, never telling anyone about the pressure she bore.

She had long forgotten that she was also just a woman—a woman who needed to be loved.

Every day, she reminded herself that her husband loved her, that her daughter loved her, that her family was happy and enviable.

When she first met Yu Wei, she couldn’t help showing off her perfect family, boasting about how much her husband adored her.

But in the end, it was all just a joke for others to laugh at.

Zhang Jianguo had no idea what was going through his wife’s mind. All he could see were the deep red handprints on Li Juan’s face.

He glanced at Yu Wei, then at Huo Mingwang, swallowing his anger as he shouted at Song Xia, every word spoken to defend his mistress.

“Are you out of your mind?! Can’t you talk things out properly? Do you have to be this violent?!”

Even though Song Xia was crying, the mistress was clearly crying in a more delicate, pitiable way. One look at Zhang Jianguo’s protective, tender expression toward Li Juan was enough to tell who he cared about.

Song Xia suddenly felt that coming here today was the worst decision of her life.

She broke down, grabbed the rolling pin Li Juan had dropped earlier, and hurled it at the two of them. It actually hit—right on Zhang Jianguo’s face.

His face turned even darker. He wanted to slap this crazy woman, but with Huo Mingwang standing there, he lost his nerve.

“Yes! I’ve gone mad!” Song Xia screamed in despair. “Zhang Jianguo! I must have been crazy to stay with you all these years!”

“I must have been crazy to brag about you to everyone! Crazy to explain things away whenever people wondered why I didn’t look like a leader’s wife! I’d tell them you worked so hard! That you were making money so we could live a good life!”

But now, not only was there no good life, this man even wanted to divorce her for a mistress—and he thought he could settle her with a hundred yuan… How laughable.

When she was young, Song Xia had been far prettier than the mistress, and she was gentle by nature. Back then, it was Zhang Jianguo who pursued her, promising that even though she had no money, if she married him, he’d treat her well for life.

Song Xia believed him. She thought having Zhang Jianguo meant having the whole world.

But after marrying him, she worked tirelessly for their family, gave up her vanity, and devoted herself to being a housewife.

She believed she had never wronged Zhang Jianguo in any way. And what did she get in return?

News of his affair. News that he wanted a divorce to be with his mistress. News that their child was already two years old.

“Zhang Jianguo, I was going to let it go after the divorce… I could even accept your hundred yuan.” Song Xia’s voice was hoarse, her lips trembling as she stared at Li Juan and Zhang Jianguo. “But now I regret it.”

“I won’t let you two have an easy life.”

Everyone in the room was stunned—even Yu Wei and Huo Mingwang looked at her twice. Then they heard her continue stubbornly:

“Zhang Jianguo, don’t you worry—I will never let you and Li Juan live happily ever after.”

After finishing her words, Song Xia turned around and pulled Yu Wei away. Zhang Jianguo was stunned when he heard this and quickly tried to grab Song Xia, but Huo Mingwang stepped forward and stood in front of the two women.

“Director Zhang.” Huo Mingwang looked down at this man who wasn’t even 1.7 meters tall. As a middle-aged man himself, he was clearly no longer the young Huo Mingwang of the past.

Coupled with the fact that this man was used to being a big boss in the grain business, the aura he carried was enough to make Zhang Jianguo tremble with fear.

He squeezed out every word through clenched teeth: “You sure are living more carefree than I am.”

Zhang Jianguo’s hand holding Li Juan trembled, and he stuttered nervously: “H-Huo… Boss Huo, you and my wife…”

Before he could finish the sentence “what’s your relationship,” Huo Mingwang’s tone turned cold as he spoke again: “You still remember she’s your wife?”

Zhang Jianguo and Li Juan shivered together. Li Juan, holding her son, collapsed to the ground and kept sneaking glances at Huo Mingwang as he spoke.

Huo Mingwang let out a cold snort, looked down at Li Juan, and then swept his gaze over the three of them before leaving a remark: “You really have poor taste.”

He strode out of that disgusting house, going after Yu Wei up ahead.

Li Juan bit her lip as she watched his tall and upright figure leave, and only after it disappeared from view did she snap out of it and rush to check on Zhang Jianguo.

“Jianguo, are you okay?”

The child in her arms was still crying, and Zhang Jianguo was already irritated. Thinking back to what Huo Mingwang said about his taste being poor, he felt even more agitated.

Enduring the pain in his body, he shook his head to indicate he was fine, stood up, took his son into the room, and then grabbed his bag to leave.

“It’s fine. You stay home with the child. I’m going to work.”

“Okay, Jianguo, be careful riding your bike!”

Seeing Li Juan show concern for him, Zhang Jianguo felt a little better. Looking at her face, twenty years younger than Song Xia’s, he held back from saying anything and finally went downstairs to ride off on his bicycle.

It wasn’t until Zhang Jianguo had ridden dozens of meters away that Li Juan remembered—didn’t this man just say he was taking her to the hospital?

She stomped her foot twice in frustration and hurried to find a mirror to check her face!

On the way back, it was still Huo Mingwang who gave the two women a ride. This time Yu Wei didn’t refuse—without a bike, there was no other way to get home except letting him drive them.

“Should I drop her off first? Are you going to the shop?” Huo Mingwang asked while driving, watching the two women’s faces in the rearview mirror. Neither of them looked good.

Needless to say about Song Xia, but Yu Wei, the one worrying for others, looked even gloomier than her, which made him feel a little amused.

He shook his head with a smile.

“Mm, take us home first,” Yu Wei answered sullenly, still patting Song Xia on the back. Luckily, though she had just cried, Song Xia had quickly suppressed her emotions.

Halfway down the road, Yu Wei suddenly noticed a mother and daughter walking hand in hand with a vegetable basket and suddenly remembered something.

“Sister Song! You’re moving today, right? Have you already found a new place?”

Song Xia nodded, rubbing her eyes. “Mm, I found one a few days ago, but only decided to move today.”

Last night, Zhang Jianguo had come to her, urging her to hurry up and process the divorce paperwork. After he left, Song Xia looked at the familiar house and felt like she couldn’t take it anymore.

So, early this morning, she told Jiang Aihua that she wanted to move.

After hearing her reason, Jiang Aihua didn’t say much, didn’t withhold the deposit, and even refunded it all to her, sighing as she said:

“Just live well with your two girls. I’ll keep an eye out for you. If there’s someone good, I’ll find the girls another dad.”

Song Xia knew Jiang Aihua meant well, so she accepted it silently without saying much. Once the new tenant came, she started packing her things.

After hearing this, Yu Wei immediately told Huo Mingwang to stop the car. He didn’t stop completely, just slowed down, and asked in confusion:

“What’s wrong?”

Yu Wei looked at Song Xia. “Sister Song, where’s the new place? Let me go check it out for you.”

Song Xia quickly shook her head. “No need, I’d feel bad troubling you. I’ll just move in when the time comes. No need for you to check—it’s nothing special.”

“No way, I have to check it for you.” If you’re going to help, then help to the end. Song Xia was one of the few who treated her well after she transmigrated to the ’80s, and they were friends. She had to help!

“Hey, no, no!” Song Xia glanced at the man driving in front. “Your man has to work, right? My new place is far away. Taking us all the way there would waste his time.”

Yu Wei crossed her arms, glanced at Huo Mingwang, and snorted lightly. “It’s fine. He’s just an idle guy who has nothing to do all day!”

Huo Mingwang shook his head helplessly.

He had no choice—if he wanted to win his wife back, no matter how busy he was, he’d make time. Worst case, he’d work overtime tonight.

Song Xia was helpless too. She was the type of soft, easily content woman who had endured all sorts of hardships growing up. Living in a place a bit worse than this wasn’t a big deal to her—definitely not worth bothering Yu Wei over.

But Yu Wei refused to agree and insisted on checking out Song Xia’s new place.

Unable to win the argument, Song Xia finally gave the address, and Yu Wei told the driver to head there.

Huo Mingwang made no comment to avoid provoking her and obediently turned the car toward Yuansheng Road, where Song Xia’s new home was located.

Yu Wei couldn’t be more thankful that she insisted on coming.

Because when she saw it, she couldn’t sit still.

“You want to live here with your two daughters?”

Compared to Jiang Aihua’s clean and simple courtyard… well, there was no comparison at all!

This place was downright shabby—the building was old, the floors were old, and the interior was old.

Old would be fine, but it was also filthy and messy. Just walking a few steps in the hallway, you’d see trash scattered everywhere.

She went upstairs to the apartment Song Xia rented, but the landlord hadn’t given her the key yet, so she couldn’t go in. However, peeking through the window, she got a full view.

It wasn’t as big as the standard room in Jiang Aihua’s courtyard. There was a kitchen, but the bathroom was a shared one for the entire floor…

Yu Wei was speechless after seeing this. Even Huo Mingwang, following behind, found the environment way too bad.

“No way. Sister Song, have you paid the rent yet? If not, just forget it.” Yu Wei thought for a moment and then added, “Actually, even if you did, don’t live here. I’ll help you get your money back.”

The place was dirty, chaotic, and unsafe. Not to mention the environment, those punks hanging around in the hallway didn’t look like good people. Yu Wei couldn’t rest easy knowing Song Xia and her two girls would live here.

Cursing Zhang Jianguo inwardly, she grabbed Song Xia and headed downstairs.

“Yu Wei, let’s not bother. It’s too much trouble.” Plus, she’d already paid the deposit, and they probably wouldn’t refund it…

She was about to divorce Zhang Jianguo and had little money left. She had to save…

“Why care about trouble at a time like this? How can you live here alone with your daughters? And the environment is so bad—I saw so many punks around. It’s dangerous!”

Song Xia didn’t argue, but as an ordinary woman past her prime, she didn’t think there was much danger.

She said again: “Yu Wei, I’ve paid the rent and packed. If I don’t move here, I have nowhere else to go.”

Yu Wei asked, “Who rented the room next to yours?”

Song Xia shook her head. “I think it’s a man. Auntie Aihua said as soon as she put up the notice for my room, he came to rent it.”

“Then…” Yu Wei thought for a moment and then slapped her hand down decisively. “Then today we’ll look for a house. Once we find one, we’ll move in immediately!”

The reason Song Xia wanted to move was to avoid gossip from neighbors. That was easy to fix—just find a place far from Auntie Aihua’s courtyard.

After saying that, Yu Wei was ready to take Song Xia to house hunt. Seeing Yu Wei running around for her and not even having time to open the dessert shop, Song Xia felt terribly guilty.

“But I’ve already paid the deposit…” The point of a deposit was to keep tenants from backing out. If she rented elsewhere now, the ten-plus yuan would be gone…

“It’s fine. Just a deposit. Only a few yuan—I’ll cover it.”

Yu Wei waved her hand generously. After meeting the landlord and canceling the rental, she prepared to take Song Xia to find a new place.

Of course, the deposit wasn’t refundable. Song Xia had paid twelve yuan—not much, but not a little either.

Yu Wei handed her the money. She refused to take it, but Yu Wei expected that.

“It’s fine. Just think of it as a gift for Shu Ya and Shu Le.”

Song Xia still didn’t take it, but Yu Wei secretly slipped the two ten-yuan bills into her side pocket without her noticing.

Feeling secretly pleased, she told Huo Mingwang to drive them to look for a house.

Huo Mingwang started the car and said, looking at her through the rearview mirror, “Let me drop you off first. Leave the house-hunting to me.”

Both Yu Wei and Song Xia froze. “Leave it to you?”

Huo Mingwang nodded. “Yeah. I’ll have someone find one for her today.”

Song Xia immediately felt a little overwhelmed. “This…”

She already felt bad about troubling Yu Wei, and now she’d be troubling Huo Mingwang too. It made her nervous.

“This works.” Yu Wei surprisingly agreed, even though Song Xia thought she would refuse. “Then I’ll leave Sister Song’s new home to you!”

Although she was still on bad terms with him, she knew her priorities. Even if she wanted to keep ignoring him, it would have to wait until Song Xia’s problem was solved…

She could bend and stretch!

Later, Huo Mingwang dropped them off and left—probably to find someone to help with the house hunt. Song Xia kept thanking him in the car and was still murmuring thanks after he left.

“It’s fine. He has several assistants. It won’t take up his time.”

Song Xia nodded, looking at Yu Wei with gratitude and a touch of sorrow.

“Yu Wei, thank you.”

If she hadn’t met Yu Wei, if they hadn’t become friends, she didn’t know if she could survive the crushing blow from her husband.

She thought she would feel miserable and broken about divorcing Zhang Jianguo, but when Yu Wei patted her shoulder and said it was okay, she had her, Song Xia couldn’t help tearing up.

What did she do to deserve such a good friend?

And actually, she realized that letting go of Zhang Jianguo wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Just like Yu Wei said, a man like that wasn’t worth keeping!
