The diner had finally been beaten into submission. Only after agreeing to a whole list of unequal terms was he let off by the crowd.
Just as Lu Wu was about to reward Da Huang for his contribution, she turned around and discovered a large bowl placed in front of him. Inside were four whole braised pork knuckles.
The ones who had brought them were Scarface and Xiao Si.
How extravagant.
“Brother Dog, I’m sorry about before, and thank you for saving Xiao Si.”
Squatting before Gou Aotian, Scarface both apologized and expressed his gratitude.
They had carefully timed their visit today and had finally managed to buy some pork knuckles.
Before coming, they had already agreed that these knuckles should be given to Da Huang as compensation.
Their gratitude was sincere.
The only problem was that as they stared at the pork knuckles in the bowl, the saliva in their mouths was becoming increasingly difficult to control.
Especially for Xiao Si.
He had tasted these pork knuckles before. That supreme delicacy was right in front of him, making both his hands and his heart itch with temptation.
With great difficulty, he forced himself to look away.
“Brother Dog, thank you for saving my life. From now on, you’re my real big brother.”
Xiao Si dropped to his knees and kowtowed to Gou Aotian. After several loud thumps, Gou Aotian let out a grunt and patted Xiao Si’s head with a paw, indicating that he forgave him.
“Why don’t you keep one pork knuckle for yourselves?”
After listening for a while, Lu Wu finally asked.
She had already fed Da Huang today.
Keep one?
Or not?
Two little figures immediately started fighting inside Xiao Si’s head.
After getting up from the ground, he decisively turned his back to Da Huang.
“No need. An apology has to be sincere.”
That was what he said, but his eyes still couldn’t help drifting back toward the pork knuckles.
Da Huang, sitting on the ground, noticed Xiao Si’s inner struggle. The corners of his dog mouth curled upward into a bizarre grin.
Xiao Si sensed no hostility from it.
Then, under Xiao Si’s expectant gaze, Da Huang opened his mouth.
Slurp.
Three pork knuckles vanished from the bowl in an instant.
This was one of Da Huang’s abilities: a special internal space where he could store objects.
As for the remaining pork knuckle, he pulled the bowl toward himself with a paw and lowered his head to devour it.
Once something had been offered to Gou Aotian, there was no such thing as getting it back.
His long tongue rolled up a piece of pork skin and tossed it into his mouth. After a brief turn around his tongue, it was swallowed whole.
Even the thick bone was crushed between his teeth.
Crunch. Crunch.
Da Huang liked it very much.
In the blink of an eye, the bowl was empty.
The inside was cleaner than if it had been washed with water.
Da Huang licked around his mouth with lingering satisfaction before nudging the bowl over to Xiao Si with a paw.
“Woof!”
Your bowl.
As a polite dog, Da Huang was very considerate.
Xiao Si, however, suffered a critical hit.
Deliberate.
This dog was absolutely doing it on purpose!
With his hopes shattered, Xiao Si’s last bit of anticipation finally died.
“Brother Dog…”
Rubbing his hands together, Xiao Si looked like he was about to kneel and kowtow again.
This time, though, it would be for the pork knuckles.
He was willing to buy them back.
Seeing Xiao Si on the verge of selling away his dignity for food, Scarface hurriedly stepped in.
“Kid, we’ll come back tomorrow.”
Scarface comforted him before dragging him away.
The area outside Myriad Poison Valley had already been conquered by the aroma of food.
If they stayed any longer, he feared that even he might abandon his dignity.
He was craving it to death.
“Oh? Big Brother, didn’t get any?”
As Scarface was leaving, a teasing voice called out.
It belonged to one of the members of his team.
The man still had one pork knuckle left. He held it in front of his nose, took a deep sniff, and sighed blissfully.
“Smells so good.”
“Big Brother, want a sniff?”
He pushed the pork knuckle toward Scarface, his face full of mockery.
Originally, he had only accompanied Scarface and Xiao Si here.
Seeing such a long queue, he became curious about what made these pork knuckles so special.
Just because something smelled good didn’t necessarily mean it tasted good.
But after finally trying one himself, he found it perfect in color, aroma, and flavor.
Only then did he understand why the diners had become so fanatical.
All he could say was that his former self had been blind.
But it didn’t matter.
He had been reborn.
Now he was a brand-new man.
He would personally become the spokesperson for Boss Lu’s pork knuckles.
The Law of “So Fragrant” never arrives late.
Seeing how miserable his big brother looked, he couldn’t resist acting cheap for a moment.
Unfortunately, he forgot one thing.
His big brother was a ruthless man.
Faced with the provocation, a trace of annoyance flashed through Scarface’s eyes before quickly turning into delight.
“Hmph.”
The burly man sneered.
Looking at the other’s smug expression, he suddenly reached out and grabbed the man’s wrist.
Before the team member could pull away, Scarface squeezed down hard on the wrist bone.
“Big Brother, I—”
Before the words “I was wrong” could leave his mouth, Scarface lowered his head and took a huge bite out of the pork knuckle in his hand.
The speed of the attack left even Xiao Si, who was following behind, completely stunned.
A massive mouthful of meat entered his mouth.
The supreme flavor, combined with the teammate’s shocked and helpless expression, made Scarface feel extraordinarily satisfied.
He had been worried about not getting any.
Then this teammate kindly delivered one right to his doorstep.
As the big brother, how could he possibly reject such generosity?
In just a few bites, Scarface finished the entire pork knuckle without changing his posture.
The intimate “feeding” action failed to create even the slightest sense of closeness.
Instead, it left the teammate feeling utterly cold inside.
“Big Brother…”
Only the bone remained in his hand.
When Scarface finally let go, his fingers loosened and the bone fell to the ground.
It was immediately snatched away by Da Huang, who had clearly been waiting for the opportunity.
Not even a chance to suck on the bone.
“Many thanks for the meal.”
Patting the teammate on the shoulder encouragingly, Scarface pulled out a handkerchief and wiped his mouth.
The teammate was dumbfounded.
His pork knuckle was just gone.
Regret filled his heart.
“Uncle…”
Xiao Si called out to Scarface, his eyes full of accusation.
He wanted some too.
His uncle was no longer the uncle who loved him.
“Ahem. Let’s head back.”
Putting on a stern face, Scarface turned and walked away.
Though the way his back looked was somewhat hurried.
Pulling off such a shameful scene in front of so many people was truly embarrassing.
There were clearly even more people today.
To get around the purchase limits, many customers had brought their entire families to line up.
Lu Wu’s hands never stopped moving.
Beside her stall, Lou Xiaotian had also set up a stall of his own.
He wasn’t selling anything fancy.
Just rice.
One spirit stone per bowl of plain white rice.
An outrageous price.
Yet plenty of people were willing to buy it.
Riding on Boss Lu’s popularity, Lou Xiaotian earned himself a tidy amount of pocket money.
Recently, his father had been giving him less and less money.
Moreover, the man seemed to disappear every day without a trace, as if deliberately avoiding him.
Patting his now-bulging money pouch, Lou Xiaotian finally felt somewhat comforted.
By the time his rice supply was nearly exhausted, Lu Wu’s pork knuckles had sold out as well.
Stretching her sore shoulders, Lu Wu circulated her spiritual energy through a complete cycle before feeling much better.
Many diners still lingered around.
Some had finished eating long ago but remained behind, chatting with fellow enthusiasts.
Faintly, Lu Wu caught three words:
“Bun Sect.”
When she listened more carefully, however, she heard nothing more.
Probably just her imagination.
So Lu Wu thought.
She swept her gaze across the crowd.
Everyone looked perfectly open and honest.
Surely there wasn’t some strange cult secretly recruiting members around here… right?
Rubbing her hands together, Lu Wu packed away her signboard.
Time to close up shop.
