After Flame Ancestor proposed the wager, the demon side did not respond immediately.
“Hmph. Humans are crafty and fond of schemes. The wolf demon is quite powerful—perhaps they’re using this opportunity to get rid of him. We mustn’t fall for it.”
Some of the demons refused to accept the bet.
They had fought hard to gain their current advantage. If they lost the wager and had to retreat three thousand li, their operational territory would be drastically reduced.
Their goal was to monopolize the Qingyuan Realm, not destroy it. Since war between the two sides would inevitably affect innocent lives, boundaries had been agreed upon long ago.
If they retreated now, it would be equivalent to handing even more land over to humanity.
Absolutely not.
“Lord Goat makes a good point, but what if we win? If those three don’t intervene, we can complete our counteroffensive in less than a day. Victory will belong to us.”
“This is an opportunity. It might be worth trying.”
“Lord Goat is right. That little human girl looks like a tiny bean sprout. I could crush her with one finger. She’s nothing to fear.”
The demons made no effort to lower their voices.
Lu Wu immediately began cursing them in her heart.
Discuss all you want, but what’s with the personal attacks?
Puffing her cheeks in annoyance, she bit into her ice cream to cool herself down.
When immortals fight, it’s always the little people who suffer.
“Not necessarily. You all saw what happened when the rat demon attacked earlier. That girl has something strange about her. Ordinary methods can’t harm her.”
“I think the humans are acting so confidently because they’ve already prepared a trap for us.”
The demon side continued arguing.
The opinions were split almost evenly, showing just how wary they were of Qing Emperor and the other two.
“Hey, have you finished discussing it yet? If not, let’s just fight already.”
“So much hemming and hawing. A bunch of old women.”
Blade Emperor had grown impatient.
Biting into his ice cream, he exhaled a stream of white mist.
“Hiss… that’s cold.”
He sucked in a breath and took another bite.
The already-small ice cream disappeared in no time.
After even licking the stick clean, Blade Emperor tossed a few spirit stones behind the stall and began helping himself.
The mung bean one was delicious.
The pudding one wasn’t bad either…
He wanted a bit of everything.
Holding an ice cream in each hand, he alternated bites from left and right, mixing flavors together.
The satisfaction on his face could not have been more obvious.
“Refreshing!”
The coolness penetrated straight into his heart, clearing his mind.
After realizing the benefits of the ice cream, Blade Emperor looked upward.
“Since you don’t have the guts to accept the wager, let’s just cancel it. Letting you beasts eat something this good would be a waste anyway.”
Qing Emperor and Flame Ancestor both agreed wholeheartedly.
Unexpectedly, the demons panicked.
“Shut up. Listen to me—we’ll take the bet.”
“But the three of you must swear an oath to the Heavenly Dao. If we win, none of you may interfere with the battle today by any means whatsoever.”
A horned demon stepped forward.
“Hahaha, sure. Both sides can swear.”
Blade Emperor leisurely finished his ice cream, rose to his feet, and agreed.
Once a Heavenly Dao Oath was made, it had to be honored. Otherwise, one’s Dao Heart would be damaged, and the path to immortality would be severed.
After seeing the three human experts swear their oaths, delight flashed through the demons’ eyes, and they immediately followed suit.
Their reasoning was simple.
The outcome of the wager would be determined by the taste of the food.
But wasn’t taste ultimately subjective?
It wasn’t as if they had never eaten human food before.
Compared to dishes that lost their vitality after cooking, they preferred raw flesh and blood.
Tearing, chewing, and devouring meat with their fangs—blood was the finest seasoning.
They had excellent odds of winning this bet.
“Wolf Demon, go.”
One of the demon leaders motioned for him to descend.
Though they appeared calm on the surface, they were frantically transmitting messages to him in secret.
“The Heart-Reflecting Mirror can detect lies, but only if you’re actually lying. As long as that ice cream has even the slightest aspect you dislike, you can honestly say you don’t like it.”
“In that case, the mirror won’t be able to detect anything.”
After all, it was only an artifact. No matter how intelligent, it couldn’t compare to living beings when it came to flexibility.
Besides, they wouldn’t actually be lying.
Demons had peculiar tastes by nature and never forced themselves to endure things they disliked.
If there was even one unsatisfactory aspect, then it simply wasn’t delicious.
“I understand.”
Burdened with this important task, the wolf demon approached the stall with a solemn expression.
He carefully examined the ice creams.
His appetite wasn’t stirred in the slightest.
Perfect.
He refused to believe that such plain-looking food could taste all that good.
He had already made up his mind.
As long as there was even a tiny detail that disappointed him, he would declare it unappetizing.
With that thought, he reached toward the strawberry white chocolate ice cream.
Naturally, Lu Wu noticed.
She had to admit that his taste wasn’t bad.
The very first thing he chose was the most expensive item.
Still, she stretched out a hand to stop him.
“What are you doing? Or are you humans planning to go back on your word?”
The wolf demon glared fiercely at Lu Wu.
Though he looked no different from a human on the surface, the brutality and murderous aura unique to demons constantly reminded everyone of the difference.
“Of course not. It’s just that while you’re gambling, I’m simply running a food stall.”
“Small business. No bargaining, no credit, and absolutely no dine-and-dash.”
Lu Wu pointed at the sign.
The prices were written clearly.
If he wanted to eat, he had to pay.
As a street vendor, Lu Wu firmly refused to be freeloaded off.
“You!”
The wolf demon was furious.
A mere human actually dared ask him for money?
She had a death wish.
Killing intent surged within him.
But when the seemingly calm yet razor-sharp gazes of Qing Emperor and the others landed on him, he abandoned any thoughts of using force.
“You don’t happen to be broke, do you?”
Lu Wu asked.
Then, kindly, she offered a suggestion.
“How about going back and collecting some? Come back when you’ve got enough. Two supreme-grade spirit stones is a bit expensive, after all.”
Demons were, after all, uncivilized brutes wearing human shapes.
Perhaps they didn’t even understand the concept of buying and selling.
“Our ancestors are so much more generous.”
Lu Wu muttered under her breath.
Unfortunately, no matter how quietly she spoke, the wolf demon could still hear her at this distance.
“Pfft.”
Qing Emperor raised an eyebrow and stabbed with words sharper than blades.
“Wolf Demon, if you can’t afford the spirit stones, why not write an IOU? I’ll lend them to you.”
“Heh, why bother with an IOU?”
Flame Ancestor looked at the wolf demon expectantly.
“How about this? Call me Grandpa once, and I’ll pay for you.”
“Taking in a wolf grandson as a greeting gift doesn’t sound bad, does it?”
These old monsters truly had razor-sharp tongues.
The wolf demon’s face turned bright red with rage.
“I have them!”
He slammed two spirit stones onto the stall.
“Happy now?”
Grinding his teeth, he fixed Lu Wu with a hostile glare.
“Of course.”
“Dear customer, here’s your ice cream. Please enjoy.”
Now that he’d paid, he was a customer.
Lu Wu immediately provided warm and attentive service, personally placing the ice cream into his hands.
She wasn’t worried about him causing trouble.
After all, if even a weak little human could act this arrogantly, the wolf demon’s fury was understandable.
His fur stood on end.
A pair of wolf ears burst from his head, and even his face began partially reverting to its original form.
To be honest…
That was kind of ugly.
Lu Wu quickly looked away.
What an assault on the eyes.
Physical attacks don’t work, so now he’s resorting to mental attacks?
Despicable!
