Crunch, crunch.
Gulp, gulp.
At the stall, some people were eating bugs, while others had practically turned into hungry bugs themselves, drooling as they watched.
Given Jiang Yunhe’s reputation, once he took the first bite, nobody doubted whether Lu Wu’s food was edible anymore.
Thanks to Jiang Yunhe’s living advertisement, the line beside the stall instantly grew much longer.
Watching everyone else eat with such relish, even those who had been hesitating eventually gave in to temptation and joined the queue.
The line was forming nicely. For the first day of business, things were going quite well.
“Sis, I want the tastiest bug!”
A little girl from a family of three spoke in a soft, sweet voice. Completely unafraid of strangers, she stood on tiptoe and peered at the bugs arranged on the plates.
At close range, the rich aroma of oil fried at high temperatures made a strand of drool slip from the corner of her mouth.
“Then I recommend this one.”
Lu Wu pointed at the grasshoppers.
Despite looking the most intimidating, they were large, meaty, tasted like chicken, and had an incredibly satisfying crunch.
“Then I’ll have the big bug!”
The little girl responded cheerfully. Her grape-like eyes remained fixed on Lu Wu, and the sweet smile on her face made it obvious she was a well-behaved child.
Lu Wu glanced at her a few times.
Good children deserved rewards.
She gave the little girl several extra grasshoppers.
The bowl was piled high.
“Eat slowly. Be careful not to poke your mouth.”
Lu Wu patted the girl’s head and received a toothy grin in return. She looked absolutely adorable.
“Mhm!”
Nodding obediently, the little girl carried her bowl to an open area.
Using a bamboo skewer, she picked up a grasshopper and held it out to the woman beside her.
“Mom, you eat first.”
What a filial child.
The woman didn’t disappoint her daughter’s kindness. Although she was still somewhat hesitant about eating bugs, she opened her mouth and bit into the grasshopper.
With a gentle crunch, the crispy shell broke apart.
The flavor hidden beneath that crackling exterior immediately brightened her eyes.
“It’s delicious.”
“Hehe…”
The little girl giggled and fed another one to her father.
Standing nearby, the couple softly said,
“A’Bao, after we finish eating this, let’s go see the doctor, okay?”
The girl’s mouth was small, so she couldn’t fit the whole grasshopper in at once.
She bit off half and chewed.
Crunch.
Confused, she looked up.
“Why do I need to see a doctor?”
“I’m not sick.”
The faint aroma of fried food reminded her of deep-fried shrimp.
The same savory fragrance.
The same delicious taste.
And when children encounter something they love, their most instinctive reaction is to want to eat every last bit of it.
Upon hearing A’Bao insist she wasn’t sick, her parents exchanged worried looks.
“A’Bao, you’ve barely been able to eat these past few days. Mommy’s worried. Let the doctor take a look later so Mommy can feel at ease.”
Their daughter had always been easy to care for.
She never needed to be reminded to eat her meals.
Yet over the past few days, her appetite had suddenly decreased. Sometimes she’d barely sit down at the table before feeling nauseated.
As the treasured jewel of the family, her parents had brought her to the Divine Physician Hall for treatment.
“That’s because I’m already full.”
A’Bao replied casually, the little tuft of hair atop her head bobbing back and forth.
She had no idea she’d just revealed a secret.
“…Already full? What do you mean by that?”
The father’s eyes turned dangerous as he softly questioned the bug-obsessed little girl.
“It’s Grandpa. He took me out to eat yummy food.”
“Roast chicken, roast duck, fish… and lots of other things!”
“Grandpa said we can only eat vegetarian food at home, and he doesn’t like that. He wants meat.”
“Mmm… Grandpa also said I could eat with him, but told me not to tell Mom and Dad.”
“I get full outside, so I can’t eat when I get home.”
“Ah!”
Only then did the little girl realize she’d let the secret slip.
She quickly covered her mouth with one hand and looked at her parents timidly, her eyes darting around nervously.
Grandpa, I’m sorry. I failed to protect our secret.
Her eyes immediately reddened.
Large teardrops hung from her long dark eyelashes, making her look pitiful enough to melt anyone’s heart.
Her fair little face was turning slightly pink.
“You…”
Seeing her reaction, the father felt a lump rise in his throat.
Grinding his teeth, he spoke in exasperation.
“It’s not that I won’t let him eat meat! The doctor specifically said he just recovered from a serious illness and needs to rest. He isn’t supposed to eat rich foods yet!”
“At his age, why is he still acting like such a stubborn old child and refusing to listen to the doctor’s advice?”
Mentioning the old man left him both annoyed and amused.
Apparently Grandpa was afraid of being scolded for breaking the rules, so he’d brought the little one along as cover.
Knowing the whole family adored A’Bao, he’d used her as a shield.
And now, seeing her on the verge of tears, the father couldn’t bring himself to continue scolding.
He’d settle the score with the old man after they got home.
Still, at least A’Bao wasn’t actually sick.
That lifted a huge weight from his heart.
“Come on. Let’s go find Grandpa.”
The father lightly tapped A’Bao’s head.
It made a crisp sound, like knocking on a melon.
“Ah? But Grandpa isn’t at home.”
“This morning he said he was going drinking with his old friends. He even promised to bring me something tasty.”
“Dad, can we bring some bugs for Grandpa too?”
Without realizing it, A’Bao had once again exposed another one of Grandpa’s secrets.
Not only had the supposedly recuperating old man been sneaking meat, he was also drinking alcohol.
Did he not care about his health at all?
“Good girl, A’Bao. Tell Daddy where Grandpa went drinking.”
The father forced a smile while suppressing his anger.
Once he caught the old man red-handed, he’d like to see how Grandpa planned to explain himself.
“I know! I’ll take you there!”
Seeing that her father wasn’t angry anymore, A’Bao instantly became cheerful again.
She happily agreed and scampered toward the exit to lead the way.
Watching the family of three hurry off—and noticing the murderous aura lingering around the father’s face—Lu Wu silently offered a brief moment of mourning for the grandfather she had never met.
Old Master, may you survive this ordeal.
Amitabha. What a sin.
“Just as expected of Boss Lu.”
A flattering voice came from beside her.
Turning around, she saw Lou Xiaotian.
After flashing Lu Wu a grin, he began fiddling with his Realm Communicator.
Although he somewhat regretted exposing Boss Lu’s location after tasting the bug feast, it was too late now.
Might as well make things even livelier.
Grinning mischievously, Lou Xiaotian uploaded a post.
It contained two photos.
One showed the bug feast itself, with every insect clearly visible.
The other captured a corner of Lu Wu’s stall, along with the highly noticeable signboard of the Divine Physician Hall in the background.
At this point, there was no hiding anything anymore.
Caption:
“An unrivaled delicacy. Anyone who doesn’t try it will regret it.”
Food lovers who had arrived in Tianyi City but still hadn’t located Lu Wu immediately began analyzing the post.
“Are those… bugs? Surely the food this time isn’t actually bugs, right?”
“No way. I bet it’s another smokescreen from Lou Xiaotian. You know what those people are like.”
“That’s a good point, but I still want to check it out. Better to make a wasted trip than miss the real thing.”
Back when Lu Wu had set up her stall in the Hundred Thousand Mountains, people had leaked her location too.
But nobody believed it.
The lesson they’d learned from missing out back then remained painfully fresh in their minds.
