Jiu Yue dictated while Ji Yiqing wrote the prescription.
Honestly, Jiu Yue didn’t really know why she could recognize all these traditional characters. She could read them, but writing them herself seemed like an entirely different matter.
Still, she carefully considered the medicine to be used.
“Take Madam Shen out to see the sights when you have time—let her enjoy the beautiful rivers and mountains, take in the world outside. That should help her spirits. Besides, you and your brothers still have marriages to arrange, right?”
In this era, family happiness and continuity were highly valued. Perhaps having a grandson or granddaughter would help her feel better. After all, many people say that children are the most healing.
Shen Zongnian nodded, holding the prescription, and cupped his fists toward Jiu Yue in thanks. “No matter what, we are truly grateful to Madam Ji.”
Jiu Yue remembered the gifts Shen Zongnian had sent her and smiled lightly. “It’s nothing, really.”
Just speaking, General Shen hurried in.
Seeing his father, Shen Zongnian immediately stood up. “Father.”
Ji Yiqing finally got a glimpse of the war-seasoned general whose reputation preceded him. Instantly, he bowed respectfully. “General Shen!”
General Shen waved him off, anxious about Madam Shen’s condition. “How is your mother?”
Shen Zongnian quickly handed him the prescription. “Madam Ji says that Mother is suffering from depression. She recommends taking her out to see the world; it should help her feel much better.”
General Shen sighed.
At last, he had time to glance at Madam Ji, as spoken of by Shen Zongnian, and the highly praised Ji Yiqing.
The sight of them made General Shen pause unconsciously.
Jiu Yue’s gaze was sharp and direct, making General Shen feel, even at his age, that his presence and aura had not waned.
Just as he was about to speak, Jiu Yue cupped her fists and bowed. “Junior Jiu Yue has long heard of the mighty war god of Great Qi, General Shen. Your martial prowess is unrivaled. May I have the honor of learning from you today?”
Shen Zongnian, hearing this strangely familiar phrasing, shivered unexpectedly.
Ji Yiqing almost choked on her own saliva—Jiu Yue actually intended to attack General Shen!
But Shen had done nothing to provoke her.
General Shen’s gaze went first to his son, noticing the bruises and scratches. Then he recalled Jiu Yue’s nearly brutal martial arts skills. So, Madam Ji truly intended to spar with him?
“Zongnian, you…”
Shen Zongnian initially thought being sparred with wasn’t a big deal. But being asked like this by his father made him feel a little embarrassed.
“Father, Madam Ji’s martial arts are indeed impressive. I sparred with her and lost.”
Even at his age, General Shen’s pride as a great general didn’t allow him to admit defeat easily.
He tugged his heavy coat. “If that’s the case, then I shall personally experience your martial skills.”
Jiu Yue stood, moved beside Ji Yiqing, and took a silver needle from her medicine kit. Then she followed General Shen to the courtyard. “It’s nothing.”
The general led Jiu Yue to the estate’s training ground, which even had racks of weapons.
He casually picked up a spear. “Madam Ji, don’t say I’m an old man taking advantage—pick any weapon from the racks.”
Jiu Yue glanced at the array of weapons. There were many, but her intention wasn’t to fight Shen in the conventional sense. For the curse, it needed passion.
She waved casually. “General Shen, I won’t be using a weapon.”
The spear struck the ground with a bang. “Madam Ji, overconfidence will cost you dearly.”
Jiu Yue grinned. “I have the right to be overconfident.”
General Shen snorted coldly. He had seen all kinds of people in his life of warfare. Yet this kind of arrogance still stirred his fighting spirit.
He took a stance and lunged forward with his spear.
Jiu Yue smirked, agilely dodging from the side.
Her training focused on lethal techniques—how to kill quickly, how to strike a head—but flashy moves were not her style.
Dodging Shen’s spear, she pulled a silver needle from her sash, starting at his calf, moving so quickly that no one could follow the motion.
The angle of the insertion was peculiar; Shen felt a chill but didn’t realize the needles had entered his body.
Ji Yiqing didn’t understand, but Shen Zongnian noticed something was wrong. “Madam Ji… I feel like…”
Ji Yiqing’s palms were sweaty; he couldn’t guess Jiu Yue’s true intention. But Jiu Yue always acted with purpose. Ji Yiqing did not question her actions.
Hearing Shen Zongnian, he turned his head slightly toward him, but his eyes remained on the sparring. “What is it?”
Soon, Shen Zongsheng arrived, having heard the news, and also noticed Shen Zongnian’s voice. He frowned. “It looks like she’s playing with my father…”
Shen Zongnian cupped his hands in greeting and introduced Shen Zongsheng to Ji Yiqing.
But there was no time for pleasantries; the sparring continued fiercely.
Although Shen was skilled, his age affected his stamina and precision. Jiu Yue moved effortlessly, constantly changing positions.
Before long, she had inserted over twenty silver needles into Shen’s body.
Shen struck again with his spear, suddenly smelling blood, feeling congestion in his chest.
Jiu Yue’s lips curled into a sinister smile.
Now!
She moved behind Shen, kicked off the weapon rack for leverage, and leapt behind him.
With a pointed kick, she struck the center of his back.
Pfft!
Shen coughed up blood!
“Father!”
“Father!”
“Jiu Yue!” Ji Yiqing’s knees buckled.
Seeing the black blood, she immediately realized—this wasn’t harm.
It was a curse being removed.
But no one else knew. The sparring had drawn all the estate’s guards and soldiers. Seeing Shen vomit blood, they surrounded the training ground.
The moment the blood appeared, Shen felt his body lighten. Since the curse was placed, it had felt like a stone pressed on his chest for years.
And in that blood, he had seen something—but couldn’t speak yet. Looking at Jiu Yue now, he thought: What an extraordinary woman!
He raised his hand to dismiss the guards.
Jiu Yue’s eyes suddenly lit up. Over thirty guards were present. She felt, finally, that she could have a proper spar.
She called out: “Ji Yiqing, take General Shen down.”
