Jiu Yue would never force anyone to do anything. Since Shao Qing’s mother had said she didn’t want treatment, Jiu Yue stood up, intending to let it go.
But then Shao Qing suddenly thumped down onto his knees.
“Great kindness and virtue from Doctor Jiu Yue—Shao Qing will repay it in the next life as an ox or a horse! In this life, I will follow Doctor Jiu Yue’s lead in everything. If I ever break this oath, may I die a miserable death, torn apart by five horses!”
Shao Qing’s mother stiffened, fumbling as she reached out to pull him up.
Yet Shao Qing slammed his head to the ground again. “I beg Doctor Jiu Yue to treat my mother. No matter how much silver it costs, Shao Qing will repay every last bit.”
Shao Qing’s mother knew her blindness came from crying too much—crying her eyes blind. Hearing his words, her tears were about to spill over again, but she forced them back.
“Shao Qing, get up, get up… Mother won’t be treated. Mother won’t.”
Shao Qing clenched his mother’s hand tightly. She wasn’t even thirty yet—she’d given birth to him in her teens, enjoyed only two short years of good life with his father, and after that, nothing but suffering.
There were still decades ahead. Shao Qing was filial—how could he bear to watch his mother spend the rest of her life in endless darkness?
Jiu Yue didn’t look at their deep mother–son affection. She simply sat back down. “Alright, alright.”
Carrot and stick, after all. Jiu Yue had already given Shao Qing medicine—if he ever thought of betraying her, he’d have to pay with his life.
Of course, she still hoped he wouldn’t betray her. Taking in a little brother wasn’t easy, after all.
After the meal, Jiu Yue cheerfully mounted her horse and rode back to Ji Village.
Ji Yiqing and Ji Chaomian were inside reading, occasionally discussing a line or two. Jiu Yue pushed the door open.
“Ji Yiqing!”
Both of them froze. Seeing Jiu Yue return, Ji Chaomian naturally felt it inappropriate to stay, so he supported himself on the table and prepared to leave.
But Jiu Yue paid him no mind at all, walking straight up to Ji Yiqing.
Ji Yiqing suddenly recalled how Jiu Yue had once stood like this before him, leaning down to kiss him. His thoughts immediately went astray. He was just about to remind her that his elder brother was still here—
When Jiu Yue rattled off everything she planned to do, nonstop.
When she finished, the two grown men in the room stared at her, dumbfounded.
Ji Yiqing: …
Ji Chaomian: !!!
His younger sister-in-law was truly extraordinary. Ordinary people, when they didn’t want to be wronged, at most shut themselves indoors. When she didn’t want to be wronged, she wanted to seize everyone by the throat.
The philosophy was simple: if I don’t get to live comfortably, then no one gets to live comfortably.
This kind of audacity and way of doing things once made Ji Chaomian feel like his head was tied tightly to his belt.
And yet… completely useless.
Because Jiu Yue never played by the rules.
Ji Yiqing and Ji Chaomian exchanged a glance. They both knew that if this so-called intelligence base of Jiu Yue’s actually came together, she’d become a thorn in countless people’s eyes.
Ji Chaomian trembled slightly. Ever since Jiu Yue arrived, his heart’s endurance had improved quite a bit.
“Uh… sister-in-law, isn’t this a bit too risky?”
Jiu Yue replied with a puzzled “Hm?” “If you don’t take risks, how do you accomplish big things?”
Ji Chaomian: …
“Besides, I’m not digging into their dirty secrets. I’m just collecting a few of their weaknesses. As long as they don’t provoke me, these things will never see the light of day. But if they dare provoke me…”
She didn’t finish the sentence in any lofty way, but both Ji Yiqing and Ji Chaomian understood perfectly: Jiu Yue was not to be messed with, and she must not be given grievances to swallow.
Ji Chaomian was steady and cautious in his actions; Ji Yiqing was refined and restrained. The brothers were different, yet both knew that once Jiu Yue set her mind on something, not even eight hundred horses could drag her back.
Ji Chaomian no longer dared to leave. He slowly sat back down—he was afraid he wouldn’t be able to stand. “Sister-in-law, why don’t you explain in detail what you plan to do—this intelligence organization you mentioned.”
Jiu Yue went, “Oh.” Since she’d still need their help to open the shops, she didn’t put on airs. After all, opening a shop in modern times and in ancient times were very different processes.
So she began rattling on again, explaining how she’d openly run a pill shop. Speaking of pill shops, Jiu Yue subconsciously shrank her neck—why did it suddenly feel like things were about to go wrong?
Forget it, forget it. Don’t think about that.
On the surface, a pill shop; in secret, an intelligence base—first in the county, then the prefectural city, then the commandery, then the capital…
Ji Yiqing: …
Ji Chaomian: !!!
Thinking about how much money it would take just to establish such a base, Jiu Yue added, “Think about it—once my network reaches the capital, and you two pass the exams and go serve as officials there, with this base in place, anyone you dislike—ka-ka, you can get rid of them. Wouldn’t that feel amazing?”
Ji Yiqing: …
Ji Chaomian: !!!
They were going to be officials to serve the country and the people, not to go around killing people.
Seeing that the two of them were still staring blankly, Jiu Yue couldn’t be bothered to talk nonsense anymore.
She slammed her palm on the desk. “Ji Yiqing! Just tell me—are you going to the county with me tomorrow to set things up or not?”
Ji Chaomian glanced at the thick desk, now sporting a mysterious crack beneath it, and bared his teeth. He felt pain for Jiu Yue’s palm—yet she seemed completely unfazed.
Ji Yiqing sighed lightly. “I never said I wouldn’t help. I just think this base of yours needs to be properly planned.”
Jiu Yue tilted her head. “Of course it needs planning. But first we buy the shop. I still need to roll the pills and all that—maybe we can barely open before the New Year.”
Ji Chaomian suddenly thought of something else. “Sister-in-law, are those pills really effective?”
Jiu Yue’s gaze slid over the top of Ji Chaomian’s head. For some reason, Ji Chaomian felt a chill on his scalp. “I’m not bald!”
Then Jiu Yue’s gaze slowly moved downward and stopped on his legs.
Ji Chaomian understood. Those pills weren’t just effective—they were very effective.
Staying any longer would be impolite. Afraid Jiu Yue might say something earth-shattering again, Ji Chaomian trembled his way out the door.
Jiu Yue glared at his retreating back, then puffed up angrily and turned to Ji Yiqing. “Are you helping me or not?”
She was already small, and now standing in front of Ji Yiqing, head tilted up, eyes wide, nose tip slightly red—she looked pretty and adorable.
But she could punch you to death.
Ji Yiqing sighed. What could he do with such a Jiu Yue? All he could do was make everything as discreet as possible, plan it carefully, and absolutely not let it be uprooted.
Everything had to be proper—proper to the extreme.
“Then we’ll go to the county tomorrow.”
In an instant, Jiu Yue beamed with joy. That was more like it. The things she wanted to do—how could they ever fail?
She reached up, grabbed Ji Yiqing by the collar, pulled him in front of her, and planted a loud kiss on his lips.
Since that night, Jiu Yue hadn’t thought about such things for a long time. Other than sleeping while holding each other, Ji Yiqing hadn’t been intimate with her in ages.
Mainly because, aside from medicine, Jiu Yue’s memory for everything else was truly terrible.
