Ji Yiqing didn’t understand: “Then this is…”

Jiu Yue glanced at the sky. “Are the city gates closed?”

Ji Yiqing looked up as well: “Soon.”

“Will we make it into the city in time?”

Ji Yiqing was puzzled: “We’re going into the city?”

Jiu Yue nodded. “Get him up. I charge silver for killing people, of course someone has to pay.”

Ji Yiqing looked at the silver note in Jiu Yue’s hand—it was five hundred taels! Wasn’t that enough?

“Who would still pay you?” Ji Yiqing thought. “The silver you already have should count as payment for the killing, right?”

Jiu Yue smiled, her eyes sparkling mischievously. “Someone will pay.”

The sound of hooves clattered, gradually fading into the distance. The metallic scent of blood in the air dissipated with the breeze.

Everything returned to calm, as if nothing had happened.

They rushed into the city, arriving at the last moment. Ji Yiqing drove the carriage in and even tossed a few copper coins to the soldier closing the gate.

The soldier didn’t ask questions, only briefly checked the contents of the carriage—and didn’t notice Wang Chuan hidden in the middle.

Jiu Yue raised an eyebrow at Ji Yiqing. No wonder earlier he tried to put Wang Chuan in the middle and asked her to stop the bleeding—he was preparing for inspection.

The carriage drove toward the Wang family residence. Ji Yiqing was puzzled: “We’re going to the Wang family for silver?”

Jiu Yue nodded and jumped out of the carriage.

The guards at the gate, of course, knew who Jiu Yue was, and hurried forward—only to see her dragging something from the carriage.

The guards were about to speak, then realized: that wasn’t just some object.

It was a person!

The guards had heard of Jiu Yue’s incredible strength, and seeing her drag someone into the Wang residence startled them. “Miss Jiu Yue, this is…”

With a bang, Jiu Yue threw Wang Chuan to the ground. “Go tell your master I’ve come to deliver a gift.”

The guards looked at the figure on the ground. Blood smeared his face, his clothes torn—hard to make out any details.

But Jiu Yue was a distinguished guest, so the guards dared not delay. Suppressing their fear and confusion, they nodded quickly and ushered her inside.

Jiu Yue dragged Wang Chuan’s feet, walking through the Wang residence like she was window-shopping. Wang Chuan’s entire back was scraped raw, and he couldn’t speak—shivering in pain.

Master Wang and Madam Wang had just spoken briefly with Wang Jinnian. Yes, he had just woken up. Though awake only a short time, he had managed to say two words before sleeping again.

Even so, the couple was overjoyed.

Hearing Jiu Yue return, they assumed something had gone wrong with Wang Jinnian’s illness and rushed to meet her.

As soon as Jiu Yue entered the main hall, Master and Madam Wang arrived.

Seeing the lump at Jiu Yue’s feet, the couple exchanged glances. Approaching closer, they realized it was a person.

Ji Yiqing bowed to Master and Madam Wang.

In the flickering lamp light, they saw bloodstains all over Ji Yiqing and Jiu Yue.

“What is this?”

“Miss Jiu Yue…”

Jiu Yue turned at the voice, her mouth curling into a grin. “Master Wang.”

Master Wang tried to ignore the figure on the ground. “Miss Jiu Yue, you’ve returned. Has there been any problem with my son’s condition?”

Jiu Yue snorted. “No, nothing like that. I’ve come for something else.”

Relieved that Wang Jinnian was fine, the couple let out a sigh.

Jiu Yue continued, “I’m here for silver.”

Master and Madam Wang exchanged glances. They had already agreed on a payment earlier. Jiu Yue hadn’t mentioned anything before leaving—now she wanted more?

Indeed, Master Wang was wealthy; giving a bit more silver wasn’t an issue, after all, Jiu Yue had saved two lives in their family.

But Master Wang couldn’t understand. Why, after saying she didn’t want it before leaving, did she now ask for silver?

Seeing Master Wang silent, Jiu Yue stepped forward. “I also want an explanation.”

Master Wang was stunned: “What?”

Ji Yiqing was also confused about what explanation Jiu Yue wanted.

Jiu Yue kicked the person on the ground. Master Wang was startled, but followed her gaze.

Upon looking, a faint sense of familiarity emerged. Upon closer inspection…

This… this… this…

It was his brother, Wang Chuan!

What had happened to him?

Jiu Yue stood there, justified and even a little angry. “Your brother used the silver you gave him to hire people to kill me.”

Master Wang’s mind went blank; Madam Wang nearly fell over. Wang Chuan actually had such a heart of venom! They had worked so hard to detox him.

And now Wang Chuan had tried to hire someone to kill the doctor?

It was as if he wanted them utterly destroyed!

Before they could speak, Jiu Yue snorted angrily: “I worked so hard to detoxify you and your son, to let you live long lives!”

“And your brother used the silver you gave him to try to kill me.”

Master Wang was dumbfounded; Madam Wang was stunned. So…?

“Basically, it’s your silver that tried to kill me, so Master Wang, I want an explanation.”

Ji Yiqing and Master Wang exchanged glances. Somehow, it felt eerily like Jiu Yue was right.

Master Wang stammered, not knowing what to say. Ji Yiqing, meanwhile, was amazed at Jiu Yue’s incredible logic. Could it really be argued this way?

Master Wang squatted, pushing aside Wang Chuan’s messy hair. Blood occasionally trickled from his mouth.

“I cut out his tongue,” Jiu Yue said nonchalantly, watching Master Wang’s actions. Master Wang nearly fell backward in shock.

“He brought six or seven men to kill me—all of them I killed.”

Master Wang had just gotten up and hadn’t fully steadied himself before collapsing again. “What?”

Jiu Yue saw he was still this clueless and thought he really wasn’t getting it.

“Those men were desperate criminals. Had I delivered them to the city authorities, I could have collected a bounty.”

Master Wang, fearing another fall, simply sat down. “Desperate criminals?”

Jiu Yue’s small face tightened, looking extremely serious. “Yes, these were ruthless criminals who committed major crimes. There would be silver waiting at the city office, as the county officials seemed to collude with them. But I didn’t deliver them.”

“If I had, once the authorities investigated and discovered they were connected to you, Master Wang, you’d be accused of harboring criminals and hiring assassins. That would bring nothing but trouble.”

Master Wang nodded dumbly, feeling Jiu Yue made sense.

Though this was Wang Chuan’s doing, he was Master Wang’s own brother—he could easily get implicated. That would be disastrous.

Jiu Yue blinked and looked at Master Wang with sharp eyes.

Master Wang: completely baffled.

It was Madam Wang who reacted first, understanding that Jiu Yue had intentionally brought Wang Chuan back. She stood, dug five silver notes from her purse, and handed them to Jiu Yue.

“Thank you, Miss Jiu Yue, for thinking of us.”

Jiu Yue pinched the thickness of the notes and smiled broadly. “You’re welcome, you’re welcome.”
