Before Jiu Yue and Ji Yiqing could even react, the boy had already gone thud-thud-thud running off into the distance.
Clearly, if they were heading back, he could have taken advantage of the excuse that he had come specially to warn them and hitched a ride, yet he didn’t. What’s more, just for that bit of well-meant advice, the two of them ought to have given him some kind of reward—but the boy hadn’t tried to use the favor to ask for anything.
Ji Yiqing held the reins and fell into thought, considering who it could be that wanted to ambush them.
When it came to matters like this, it was better to believe there might be danger than to assume there wasn’t.
He couldn’t put Jiu Yue in harm’s way. Turning back now was the right choice.
Seeing Ji Yiqing turn the horse around to head back, Jiu Yue grabbed his hand in one swift motion. “What are you doing?”
Ji Yiqing frowned, carefully scanning their surroundings. “We should go back first. Nothing matters more than your safety. Whether it’s true or not, it’s better to be cautious.”
Leaving aside whether it was the Wang family or not, just the fact that Jiu Yue had been spending so freely today was enough to draw unwanted attention.
He had been careless—so focused on how happy she was shopping that he forgot to remind her not to flaunt her wealth.
Jiu Yue looked indignant. “You’re looking down on me!”
Ji Yiqing had no idea how she’d come to that conclusion, but he absolutely couldn’t let her think that. “I’m not!”
Jiu Yue snapped the reins and smacked the horse’s rump. “Then let’s go home. I don’t want to stay outside.”
Ji Yiqing tugged at the reins. “But—”
Jiu Yue shot him a sideways glance. “Shut up.”
Ji Yiqing shut up.
Jiu Yue was furious. This man actually thought that a few petty thugs could stand against her—what an insult to her very existence!
At this point, going back would only make Jiu Yue cause a scene. Ji Yiqing kept one hand on the reins while judging the terrain, also keeping an eye out for anything that could be used as a weapon.
Even a wooden stick would do.
Jiu Yue sat on the cart with puffed-up cheeks. It’d better be that the boy was lying—otherwise, today she was definitely going on a killing spree.
How dare they look down on her? Hide?
There was no such word as “hide” in Jiu Yue’s dictionary!
Who could beat her, anyway?
Ji Yiqing lowered his voice and said, “I don’t think it’s people from the Wang family.”
Jiu Yue had been fuming a moment ago, but immediately latched onto the new topic. “Why?”
“Killing you brings them no benefit. Wang Jinnian and Old Master Wang may have been detoxed, but didn’t you say they still need a long period of recuperation? If you’re gone and the poison flares up again, what then?”
Jiu Yue pinched her chin and nodded. What then? Hm… this thinking thing was hard. Why did using her brain feel so difficult?
Ji Yiqing suddenly changed his tone. “But we also can’t guarantee that everyone in the Wang family is a good person.”
Jiu Yue let out an “Ah?” What was that supposed to mean?
Didn’t he just say it wasn’t the Wang family?
How did it loop back to them again?
“Old Master Wang’s younger brother.”
Jiu Yue put on a look of sudden realization, appearing confident and in control—though she still couldn’t actually reason it out. “So… why would his brother want to kill me?”
Ji Yiqing chuckled when he saw her utterly blank expression. It was oddly amusing, and chatting with Jiu Yue was quite satisfying.
She wouldn’t wildly speculate, but she also wouldn’t really think things through—best to just feed her the answer directly.
“That concubine’s child is probably his brother’s. And poisoning Old Master Wang and Wang Jinnian—wasn’t that clearly meant to wipe out Old Master Wang’s bloodline and let him die?”
Jiu Yue smacked her lips. That did seem to make some sense.
“But your arrival not only cured Old Master Wang, it even brought Wang Jinnian back from the brink. With such a huge family fortune, everything will now fall to Wang Jinnian. It has nothing to do with him anymore.”
Only then did Jiu Yue truly understand. She slapped Ji Yiqing on the shoulder. “Right! You really are smart.”
Ji Yiqing bared his teeth in pain. Jiu Yue’s hand was soft and tender, but when she hit someone, it hurt.
Still… she’d praised him for being smart.
Fine. He was kind of smart.
Just as Ji Yiqing was about to speak, Jiu Yue suddenly covered his mouth, pressing her index finger to her lips. “Shh! They’re here.”
Ji Yiqing hadn’t heard anything, nor did he know what Jiu Yue meant by “they’re here.”
He was just about to turn his head when he felt a tight grip on his shoulder—and then he was airborne.
Yes, airborne—and he didn’t stop until he slammed into a tree.
What kind of decent person gets picked up and thrown by their wife on a daily basis?
“Hide!”
Ji Yiqing hadn’t even processed why Jiu Yue told him to hide when several burly men suddenly appeared by the roadside.
Each of them looked ferocious, large sabers in hand, their blades flashing with cold light.
The scar-faced leader leered at Jiu Yue, who stood atop the cart like she was looking down on the world.
“What a fine little lady. Brothers, we’re in for a treat tonight.”
Jiu Yue looked at these filthy men. She really was in for a treat—she’d been holding back for days without killing anyone to vent her anger.
Hearing this, Ji Yiqing panicked and was about to rush out. Not caring about the mud on him, he scrambled around looking for a stick to help.
But after taking just one step, he quietly retreated.
Alright. He’d misjudged Jiu Yue—badly.
Jiu Yue didn’t waste a single word on those stinking men. While the scar-faced man and his lackeys were still laughing loudly, she lunged forward like a ghost.
With one slap, she sent the scar-faced man flying to the ground. “Take your ‘good fortune’!”
Everyone was stunned by Jiu Yue’s sudden attack.
The next moment, they forgot everything else and swung their blades at her.
Ji Yiqing’s heart jumped into his throat.
But he saw Jiu Yue stomp down on the scar-faced man’s hand. His saber fell with a clang as he screamed in agony.
Jiu Yue stood up and slashed backhandedly—cutting a huge gash across the scar-faced man’s throat.
Blood sprayed everywhere.
Jiu Yue turned to face the remaining lackeys.
Ji Yiqing started frantically digging a pit with his stick. Then he decided it wouldn’t be deep enough and switched to yanking branches and long grass instead.
A breeze passed by, lifting the loose strands of hair on Jiu Yue’s forehead. A careless smile curved her lips.
There was a fresh streak of blood across her face—though it wasn’t hers.
The warm, salty scent of blood stirred an inexplicable excitement in Jiu Yue.
The lackeys were terrified. Bandits from Qingshui County—the infamous Scar Lord—couldn’t even withstand a single move from her!
Without another word, Jiu Yue turned and wielded the saber with precision, swinging it more than a dozen times in rapid succession.
Three or four men fell one after another.
The remaining lackeys snapped back to their senses and fled in panic, scrambling and crawling in all directions.
“H-help! Murder! Murder!”
Ji Yiqing pulled at the long grass even faster. These weren’t ordinary men—they were bandits from Qingshui Stronghold, all with blood on their hands.
Jiu Yue was doing heaven’s work, eliminating evil for the people.
In just a short while, seven or eight burly men lay on the ground, all with terror frozen on their faces.
Jiu Yue clicked her tongue and tossed the saber aside.
“Not a single one worth fighting.”
